Aussie parents buy four-year-old her own $1m property

A four-year-old girl is the lucky owner of a $1m property and she may have just taken the cake for the youngest Aussie homeowner.
As many Aussies struggle to become homeowners across the country, at just four years old, Willoughby won't have that same worry.
Her parents, Mark Kensley and his wife Alana, decided to make the decision to not 'kick the can down the road,' and buy a home for their daughter now, rather than wait another 16 or so years to help her do it.
'She's already started telling people she has her own house,' he said. 'We've told her about (the property) and we will remind her every year …. but at four-and-a-half years old, it kind of goes in one ear and out the other.'
The property the Sydney parents purchased for their daughter was a circa $1 million one-bedroom unit in the new Willoughby Grounds development.
The home is in Willoughby, on Willoughby St for their daughter Willoughby – so the couple took it as a sign.
'I'm a sentimental person,' Mr Kensley said. 'We used to live in Willoughby, we fell pregnant when we were there so we named her after the suburb we lived in … I wanted to buy something that my daughter might appreciate one day, with her namesake.'
Mr and Ms Kensley aren't the only ones taking this approach - parents all over the nation are forking out more money than ever before to help their kids to get a foot on the property ladder.
Research by Mozo Money showed that almost 75 per cent of those don't expect anything in return and they were gifting on average $74,000.
Mr Kensley said although legally the property wasn't currently in Willoughby's name, it was very much hers and as soon as she turned 18 she could do what she wanted with it.
'Live in it while she goes to university, sell it to pay for something else – who knows what, but it will be available for her to choose.'
For now, it would be an investment and after living in the suburb for many years, Mr Kensley had confidence it would always have a secure tenant and hopefully pay for itself.
'It's a good development, it's quality and a great location. The bus stop is across the road, for city workers who want that convenience,' he said.
'We also have a pet cavoodle so we plan to make it pet friendly for the tenants.'
Ray White's director of projects and developments Tim Abott said it was becoming commonplace for parents to do this.
'We're seeing more and more parents look to get ahead of the market — not just helping their kids into a first home, but in some cases, assisting them before they're ready,' he said.
'Willoughby Grounds has struck a particular chord with buyers. We've had people return to the suburb after years away, or in Mark's case, purchase for a child named after the area.'

An real estate agent is pushing back against the not-so-flattering perception many people have of the industry by calling out some of the hated tactics Aussies are well and truly fed up with. Jordan Bulmer has been in the industry since he was 19 and currently works as a sales agent at McGrath in Terrigal, on the NSW Central Coast. While the 30-year-old knows there are plenty of 'excellent' real estate agents, he admits there are also some 'pains in the backside too'. 'I think real estate as a whole just has a bad stigma around it,' he told adding that it is the one per cent of unsavoury tactics used by some agents that cause these issues. In fact, this stigma is the reason Mr Bulmer initially rejected an opportunity into get into the industry. 'I got asked to be a real estate agent, and I said, 'No way. I'm not going to be a real estate agent, you guys are wankers. Everybody hates you guys',' he said. But, eventually, he decided to give it a go and ended up loving it. He has now been in the industry for over a decade and he has found being honest and upfront with clients produces a better result than any sneaky tactic might. Mr Bulmer has been taking to social media to address some of the frustrations that Aussies have with the industry. In a recent TikTok video, he responded to a comment calling out the use of fake offers to put the pressure on other interested buyers. 'Yeah not into this. I don't know why agents do this. If someone comes to me and says has there been an offer on the property and there hasn't I just say 'no, there hasn't',' Mr Bulmer said in the video. 'I haven't found the right person, there doesn't have to be an offer on every property. I think the question would be, do you want to buy it? And then lets see if we can work out a price where everybody's happy. 'I wouldn't do this, don't say that there's fake offers.' Speaking to the real estate agent said there is 'no need' for people to use these kind of tactics when selling a home. 'I don't understand why some agents do some of the things that frustrate the living daylights out of people. I just don't get it,' he said. 'Like as if real estate agents, after all this time, can't tell that people know that they're playing games. It blows my mind sometimes. I find that just such a silly thing to do, but it seems to happen so much.' Working in real estate can often be perceived as glamorous, full of big pay cheques, fancy cars and beautiful properties but, in many cases, the online perception does not match the reality of the role. The truth is, a lot of the work behind the scenes is far from glamorous and, in Mr Bulmer's case, he always wanted to be transparent in his work and 'be the opposite to what everybody expects out of a real estate agent'. So, when he tells clients things they don't expect to hear from an agent, like being upfront about a property having no offers, sometimes people are shocked. He is constantly having to face this negative perception a lot of people have about those who work in the real estate industry. 'I find it difficult that real estate agents are all sort of tarred with the same brush and I'm in the mix of that when I feel like I'm different, within reason. But it just is what it is,' the 30-year-old said. 'All I worry about is my clients and the people that come into touch with my team and our company, and I just try and do a good job to everybody there and everybody that we're working for, and everybody else I don't worry about.' As a young real estate agent, Mr Bulmer sees it as his duty to try and change the stigma around the industry, which is why he started his TikTok channel. He hopes by being upfront and answering people's questions he can give owners and buyers the information to combat bad practices or the agents that are doing the wrong thing. Mr Bulmer also believes the barrier for entry into real estate is 'too low'. 'A real estate agent's job is to, essentially, maximise price for an owner, maximise their outcome, to market their property, and to handle the transaction without emotion,' he said. This can be difficult because, for many sellers, there is a lot of emotion attached to their home and it can cloud their judgment when it comes to the sale. Mr Bulmer said there are always going to be some scenarios where people get upset, but he believes more agents would be equipped to deal with this in a respectful and productive way if getting into the industry required more training. 'You're managing millions of dollars and lots of emotion, and it's a pretty easy course to get into real estate, I think that they need to raise the bar,' he said. For entry-level beginners, the process to getting into the industry typically takes between one and two months, with the time frame including completing the necessary education and training and obtaining the required license to practice. Mr Bulmer pointed out that, while it is up to the owner to choose the real estate agent they want to represent them, it can be hard to understand from a 30 minute conversation who is going to be the right fit and have your best interests at heart. 'It's always going to be tricky, because when you've got money and emotion, in general in any industry, can create tension,' he said. 'And, unfortunately, you can't have multiple people buy one property. So there's always going to be some people upset. You can't help that.' But he said coming to people with transparency, great service and avoiding worn-out tactics is the best way forward.

BYD's Australian boss has taken to social media to blast claims from rival Chinese car brand Chery that accuse BYD, MG and Geely of copying its hybrid technology – calling the suggestion F*** in a fiery LinkedIn post. The outburst comes after Carsales published an article quoting Chery Australia COO Lucas Harris, who said competing Chinese brands like BYD were '100 per cent' copying the company's so-called 'Super Hybrid' powertrain technology. Harris told Carsales this during the launch of Chery's Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 hybrid SUVs. The Carsales story referenced BYD's new Shark 6 ute, MG's HS Super Hybrid, and Geely's incoming Starray EM-i Super Hybrid, all of which use similar naming conventions and drivetrain logic, with varying claims about efficiency, battery backup, and petrol-electric switching. But Harris said, 'No, they're copying us … 100 per cent they are.' 'Maybe we should be flattered that some of our competitors decided to copy our technology, or the name of our technology, because their technology is not the same.' The article and Harris's comments provoked an immediate and rare response from BYD Australia General Manager Wing You, who posted a screenshot of the article with a blunt remark. 'Emmmmm, very interesting!' he wrote on LinkedIn. 'They are very lucky by internal rules, we cannot negatively comment on other brands; however, I need to say, this GENTLEMEN's words are F***!.' The LinkedIn post has since been taken down, however BYD CMO Kate Hornstein confirmed that the automaker was the first globally to introduce plug-in hybrid technology with the launch of the F3DM in 2008. 'Before the launch of the SEALION 6 plug-in hybrid SUV in mid-2024, the term 'Super Hybrid' was used in the Australian market. Anything that suggests otherwise is misleading and risks confusing consumers who deserve clear, fact-based information to support their vehicle choices,' she said. In the Carsales interview, Harris told journalist Ally Lawrence that Chery took possession of the 'Super Hybrid' name more than 12 months ago in Europe. However, trademark records confirm the name 'Super Hybrid' and 'Super Hybrid System' is active in the United Kingdom, registered to Chery Automobile Co., Ltd., but it was only lodged in April 2025, not a year prior. Chery has pending trademark applications for the term in several other jurisdictions, including Thailand, Brazil and Australia. BYD applied to trademark its DM-i hybrid system in multiple countries, including the United States, Australia and Brazil as early as December 2024 – months before Chery's UK filing and most recently in the UK in May 2025. Harris told Carsales that Chery claimed to have possession of the 'Super Hybrid' name over 12 months ago in Europe; however, Harris admitted that BYD beat it to the Aussie market with the Shark 6 dual-cab ute. It uses a system called Dual Mode Intelligent (DM-i) in the Shark 6, with the car capable of driving in EV or hybrid mode without performance loss. In comparison, Chery's version is branded CHS or SHS depending on the model, promises better driveability when unplugged, with Harris claiming rival plug-in-hybrids (PHEVs) become 'awful to drive' when battery levels dip. 'Noise goes up considerably, the power delivery and driving feeling is significantly worse; and the fuel economy is just awful,' Harris told Carsales. 'That's a big difference with our technology; you can drive it around and never, ever, ever plug it in, and you'll have no deteriorated performance at all. 'You won't suffer any negative consequences by not plugging it in.' No formal legal action has been flagged.
