10 best Amazon Prime Video movies to watch this summer

With the calendar turning to August, summer is on the back stretch. The weather will get cooler, and the days will get shorter. Summer movies will head to the back burners as horrors and awards season hopefuls take center stage. That's a September problem. It's still August, and Amazon Prime Video has an impressive collection of blockbusters, romances, and adventures to keep you occupied the rest of the summer. We narrowed down the list of summer movies on Amazon to 10. The Fall Guy (2024) The Fall Guy is the perfect summer blockbuster. It has two charming leads, thrilling action scenes, and effective comedic gags. Loosely inspired by the TV series from the 1980s, The Fall Guy centers around Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling), a former Hollywood stuntman recruited out of retirement to work on a film being directed by his ex-girlfriend, Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt). Recommended Videos The lead actor, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, suddenly vanishes during filming, and if he isn't found, Jody's career is at risk of plummeting. Colt goes rogue to retrieve the actor, and in doing so, uncovers a menacing plot that puts the entire production in danger. Backed by sensational chemistry between the two leads, David Leitch's love letter to the stunt community is an entertaining romp from start to finish. Stream The Fall Guy on Prime Video. Heads of State (2025) Heads of State exudes big '90s energy. It's an action movie moonlighting as a buddy comedy, making it the perfect vehicle for an Arnold Schwarzenegger or Sylvester Stallone. Instead of those two legends, Idris Elba and John Cena star as Prime Minister Sam Clarke and President Will Derringer, respectively. Despite their dislike of one another, the political rivals agree to fly to a NATO summit together. During the flight, the plane is hijacked, forcing Clarke and Derringer to escape using parachutes. Now on the run, the duo must identify the mole who planned the attack and stop them from executing their diabolical plan at the summit. Some of this movie is dumb fun, but Elba and Cena form an effective comedic team that works. Stream Heads of State on Prime Video. Snack Shack (2024) Snack Shack has the hallmarks of a good coming-of-age movie — a strong friendship, low stakes, a romantic lead, and some hijinks. Teenagers AJ (Conor Sherry) and Moose (Gabriel LaBelle) are thick as thieves, always thinking about their next moneymaking scheme. For the summer, the duo decides to buy the local pool's beat-up snack shack. The two entrepreneurs fix it up and manage to create a profitable business. Nothing could come between these best friends — except for a girl, of course. Impressing Brooke (Mika Abdalla), the new lifeguard, becomes the boys' sole focus, even if their friendship takes a back seat. Snack Shack is more funny than feel-good, but the movie's charm is undeniable. Stream Snack Shack on Prime Video. Summer Days, Summer Nights (2018) Bridge and Tunnel's Edward Burns puts the spotlight on his beloved Long Island in Summer Days, Summer Nights. Set in the summer of 1982, the ensemble dramedy follows a group of townies from Memorial Day to Labor Day. For JJ Flynn (Pico Alexander), his summer goes from heartbreak to happiness after embarking on a passionate fling with Debbie (Lindsey Morgan). Frankie (Anthony Ramos) gets a chance at redemption with his ex-girlfriend, Suzy (Caitlin Stasey). Winky (Rita Volk) can't stand her new co-worker, Terry (Amadeus Serafini), and Jack Flynn (Burns) does what he can to keep his son out of trouble. Burns understands small-town living and perfectly captures the highs and lows of home in the summer. Stream Summer Days, Summer Nights on Prime Video. The Accountant 2 (2025) The Accountant 2 did not need a sequel. Gavin O'Connor's action thriller about an accountant with elite combat skills ended on a definitive note. Yet O'Connor crafted a sequel that channeled the spirit of a buddy comedy, and it totally justified its existence. When Ramond King (J.K. Christian) is found murdered, the words 'find the accountant' are on his arm. Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) follows orders and tracks down the accountant, Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck), and reluctantly asks him to help with the case. When Christian discovers a conspiracy involving a deadly organization of assassins, he calls in backup in the form of his brother, Brax (Jon Bernthal). This movie only works because of the chemistry between Affleck and Bernthal. You'll be surprised by how much you end up laughing. Stream The Accountant 2 on Prime Video. Piranha (1978) After the success of Jaws, Hollywood rode the creature-feature wave and commissioned many water-focused horrors. According to Steven Spielberg, Piranha is the 'best Jaws rip-off.' Spielberg supported the movie so much that he made Universal drop the lawsuit to block Piranha from being released during the same summer as Jaws 2. Genetically engineered piranhas are discovered near an abandoned military compound. They were created to fight the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War. Now, these piranhas are killing everything in their path and have their sights set on the river that leads to a summer camp. What makes Piranha special is its unapologetic nature. It's self-aware and embraces its B-movie characteristics. More films of this nature need to follow suit and stop taking themselves so seriously. Stream Piranha on Prime Video. The Thomas Crown Affair (1999) The Thomas Crown Affair remake in one word — sexy. From the actors and story to the wardrobe and the locations, TTCA is a sexy and stylish movie. Pierce Brosnan plays Thomas Crown, who has the charm of James Bond without the cool gadgets and espionage training. Crown is a billionaire art thief who successfully steals $100 million in artwork. The museum's insurance investigator, Catherine Banning (Rene Russo), is tasked with investigating Crown as a potential suspect. As Banning gets closer to Crown, the pair embark on a passionate affair that toes the line between ethical and unethical. Hopefully, Michael B. Jordan's remake captures the same magic as this entry. Stream The Thomas Crown Affair on Prime Video. Meet the Parents (2000) The movie that made you ponder if Ben Stiller could milk Robert De Niro's nipples is Meet the Parents. Greg Focker (Stiller) is a male nurse who plans to propose to his girlfriend, Pam Byrnes (Teri Polo). First, Ben wants to ask Pam's father, Jack (Robert De Niro), for permission during a visit to their family's Long Island house. As soon as Greg arrives, things go to hell. He loses his luggage and becomes the butt of every joke. Making matters worse is Jack's background as a CIA agent, who uses his investigative skills to pick Greg apart. Never has a movie captured the uneasiness of meeting a significant other's parents for the first time more than Meet the Parents. Hopefully, your real-life father-in-law doesn't hook you up to a lie detector for questioning. Stream Meet the Parents on Prime Video. Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong (2015) Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong is a walk-and-talk that clearly takes a page out of the Before trilogy's playbook. In Hong Kong, Ruby Lin (Jamie Chung) is a toy designer working in the city temporarily. Josh Rosenberg (Suits LA's Bryan Greenberg) is an American expat working in finance. One night, the two strike up a conversation and walk the streets, confessing their hopes, dreams, and plans for the future. Timing forces them to go their separate ways, but fate brings them together again one year later. The stakes in Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong are low, as they should be. It's a brisk and easy-to-digest romantic comedy that benefits greatly from its setting — the beautiful city of Hong Kong. Stream Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong on Prime Video. The Way Way Back (2013) Many can relate to themes of adolescence and uncertainty in The Way Way Back. However, this dramedy will hit home for children of divorce. Duncan (Liam James) is a kind and quiet 14-year-old who must spend the summer at a beach house with his caring mother, Pam (Toni Collette), her arrogant boyfriend, Trent (Steve Carell), and his obnoxious daughter, Steph (Zoe Levin). Feeling neglected in his life, Duncan finds solace in the town's water park and its eccentric manager, Owen (Sam Rockwell). For the first time in a while, Duncan feels seen, and Trent takes it upon himself to show the boy his worth. Sam Rockwell, please play more of these endearing father figures in movies. Stream The Way Way Back on Prime Video.

Speedway Classic: Fastest Players in MLB By Sprint Spped

If you blink, you might miss them — and no, we're not talking about the NASCAR race cars that usually electrify the grounds of Bristol Motor Speedway. We're, of course, talking about the fastest players in Major League Baseball, a few of whom will play in Saturday's Speedway Classic at Bristol Motor Speedway. There are a number of ways to determine a player's speed, from counting their steals to looking at their 90-foot splits. For this exercise, we're looking at the fastest players in MLB by their sprint speed, as defined by Baseball Savant. Let's get into it. Honorable Mention: Elly De La Cruz, Reds We'd be remiss not to acknowledge one of the quickest players in the Speedway Classic, Elly De La Cruz. He was born to play in this event as one of the most aggressive base runners in the league. Since making his debut in 2023, nobody has more stolen bases than him (131) and he's tied for fifth in stolen bags this year with 29. In his 2024 season, he swiped the most bags in the majors with 67. Surprisingly, Cruz is in the 91st percentile in sprint speed with 29.1. Two seasons before, he was Top 3 in that statistic. Anytime there's a debate about the fastest player in MLB, Witt's name is always going to be in the discussion, and for good reason. Witt is a threat anytime he puts the ball in play. Since making his debut in 2022, his 31 triples are tied for second in that time span, and his 137 stolen bases are the most by any player in that same timeframe. This season, his sprint speed is 30.3 ft/sec, which puts him in the top spot. His home to first speed has never been higher than 4.14, which also ranks him at the top percentile of the league. Witt is the true definition of a five-tool player. In his 11th season, Trea Turner is still one of the fastest players in MLB. The 32-year-old is third among active players in stolen bases with 304, despite playing 265 fewer games than Starling Marte, who is the leader at 359. Turner has led the National League in stolen bases twice in his career: in 2018 with 43 and 2021 with 32. When he's not leading the league, he's hovering around the Top 10. Byron Buxton's 11-year career has been shortened due to nagging injuries, causing him to miss over 900 games. When he does get on the diamond, though, Buxton is undoubtedly one of the fastest players in the league. The 2015 No. 2 pick had a 60-yard dash time between 6.4-6.6. Buxton has 110 career stolen bases and has only been caught 12 times in his career. It didn't take long for Victor Scott II to make this speed known to the rest of MLB. In his first full season, Scott is fourth in the NL in stolen bases with 26 and has only been caught twice. He has one of the fastest home to first times with 4.13. The Phillies are well-represented on this list, as the 24-year-old speedster is Philadelphia's second player on this list. Rojas is one of five players in MLB this season to have a sprint speed above 30, and he has 30 bolts on the season. Simpson has been in the majors for 62 games and is already third in the entre league with 32 stolen bases. His speed is so electric he routinely beats out ground balls with his 3.95 home-to-first time. He's the only player with a time under four seconds. Any time Simpson is on base and a ball gets through the infield, there's a good chance he'll be sliding into home, if not standing up. He currently ranks sixth in sprint speed at 29.9. Soon he'll join the 30 club. White might not be the Braves player you were expecting to see on this list, but the stats back up that he's the fastest player on the team. The 31-year-old ranks higher than his outfield teammates, Michael Harris II and Ronald Acuña Jr., with a sprint speed of 29.9. Anything in the gap can easily be a triple for Corbin Carroll. Since making his debut in 2022, he leads the majors in triples with 39. He's also eighth in stolen bases with 104 during that time span. In the 2024 season, Carroll circled the bases in 14.30 seconds for an inside-the-park homer, one of the fastest times since being tracked by Statcast. His first-to-home time, 4.12, is one of the fastest in the league, and he's just outside the top 10 in sprint speed with 29.7. You might not think of Peña as this blazer on the base paths, but his sprint speed is among the highest in the majors. His 29.6 puts him in the 97th percentile of MLB players. He's another player that made his debut in 2022 and, since then, has been in the top 10 in sprint speed each season. Armstrong was a superstar in the making, and he's taken his game to another level this year, putting himself in the MVP conversation. One thing that helped take his game to the next level is his elite speed. PCA ranks in the top 10 in all base running categories; his 29 stolen bases rank fifth in the majors. Armstrong blazed around the bases in just 14.10 secs for an inside-the-park homer in 2024, the fastest time recorded in 2024. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? 'Field of Dreams' To Hoops On A Battleship: MLB Speedway Classic Joins This List

Basketball games on tennis courts. College hoops on a battleship. Baseball in a cornfield. You can get real creative about where teams play. We'll see another one on Saturday – an MLB game on a NASCAR racetrack – when a record crowd is expected at Tennessee's Bristol Motor Speedway. As we prepare to watch home runs fly high over the high banks, let's dive back into some of the other interesting places to catch a game. MLB at Field of Dreams – Yankees vs. White Sox, Aug. 12, 2021 It was built, and they came. Inspired by the 1989 film "Field of Dreams", both teams' players – dressed in retro uniforms – entered the baseball field in Dyersville, Iowa, built specifically for the event through the corn stalks, recalling one of the movie's most memorable scenes. Adding to the aura was actor Kevin Costner, star of the movie, participating in the pregame ceremony. The stadium was built next to the field used in the film, designed to blend seamlessly with the landscape. Adding to the cinematic flair was Tim Anderson's walk-off homer that sailed into the cornfields to clinch the win for the White Sox. Was it heaven? No, but the whole event created enough memories for fans that they'll have to brush them away from their faces, as James Earl Jones' famed character Terrance Mann said in the movie. What was it like? "Fans came to see a show, and we gave them a show. Being able to walk it off is definitely one of my best moments of my career for sure." – White Sox outfielder Tim Anderson, in 2021 "That was as special and breathtaking a setting for a baseball game as I've ever been part of." – Yankees manager Aaron Boone, in 2021 Battle at Bristol — Tennessee vs. Virginia Tech, Sept. 10, 2016 A record-breaking 156,990 fans packed Bristol Motor Speedway to watch Tennessee and Virginia Tech in a college football spectacle. Usually reserved for NASCAR, the racetrack transformed into a gridiron, creating the largest-ever crowd for a college football game in a jaw-dropping albiet cavernous motorsport setting. Adding to the uniqueness of the venue was that both schools are fairly equidistant from the racetrack, with the city of Bristol separated by the Virginia-Tennessee state line. What was it like? "I think the reality hit our players when we came here yesterday for the walk through with all the campers and trailers again this is truly a special evening that we'll remember for a lifetime." – Tennessee coach Butch Jones, in 2016 Carrier Classic – UNC vs. Michigan State, Nov. 11, 2011 College basketball took to the sea as part of the "Carrier Classic" series, with the Tar Heels and the Spartans playing aboard the USS Carl Vinson, an active aircraft carrier in San Diego on Veterans Day in 2011. Players adjusted to unique conditions, including glare from the sun and wind on the open court that sat on top of the ship's flight deck. The game drew 8,111 fans in attendance, including active military personnel and President Barack Obama. There had been concern that condensation would accumulate on the temporary court, which did occur in the 2012 edition of the event in South Carolina and prompted some of those games to be canceled. What was it like? "I was just sort of jogging, waving, 'Oh hey, hi, there's a sailor,' … We're all just looking around, taking it easy, looking around. I had to remind myself, 'OK, this is a game. I have to focus.' It was hard." - UNC player Harrison Barnes, in 2011 WNBA's Liberty Outdoor Classic at Arthur Ashe Stadium – July 19, 2008 Four years after playing at Radio City Music Hall, the Liberty were at another unique venue – even if it was technically on a court rather than a theater stage. In 2008, the Liberty hosted a WNBA game at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, the main site of the US Open. The stadium was a fitting venue as it is part of the USTA Billie Jean National Tennis Center, named after the tennis legend and pioneer of women's sports. The 19,000 fans who flocked to the game, which did see swirling winds hinder some of the on court again, set a then-record for league attendance. What was it like? "It's the perfect arena, it's almost the same (dimensions) … Basketball was my first love, so for me, it's very appropriate that the WNBA is playing the game at the center." - Tennis icon Billie Jean King, in 2008 "NBA Outdoors" at Indian Wells – Phoenix Suns, 2008–2010 The NBA hit the desert as the Suns hosted a series of preseason games at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in California's Coachella Valley. Often known in tennis as the home of the "fifth Grand Slam," it was a novel sight to instead see some slam dunks in what was dubbed "NBA Outdoors." In the first edition, held on Oct. 11, 2008, the high desert temperatures dipped to below 70 degrees by the evening tip-off, accompanied by strong winds in the fourth quarter that affected the ball and court conditions. What was it like? "I don't think anyone expected it to be this cold here. It felt like Edmonton, Alberta, not Palm Springs." – Suns guard Steve Nash, in 2008 "It was colder than a motherf-----. And you can quote me on that." - Suns center Shaquille O'Neal, in 2008 NHL Winter Classic/Stadium Series, 2008 - present Hockey originated as an outdoor sport, often played on frozen lakes and rivers, but it took on a new meaning when the NHL started the Winter Classic in 2008 at iconic football and baseball stadiums. The inaugural edition at Buffalo's snowy Ralph Wilson Stadium drew over 71,000 fans, with the 2014 event in Michigan Stadium drawing an NHL-record crowd of 105,491 between the Red Wings and the Maple Leafs. The Stadium Series expanded the outdoor concept, featuring games at venues like Dodger Stadium (2014), bringing hockey to warm-weather locales with palm trees and concerts. WNBA at Radio City Music Hall – 2004 Radio City Music Hall is known for the Rockettes instead of rebounds, but one of New York's most iconic stages provided a unique hoop setting in 2004. The New York Liberty played six home games at the famed venue in 2004 amid Madison Square Garden renovations, trading the hardwood for center stage. The games were played in front of red curtains, creating a surreal and intimate basketball experience in midtown Manhattan. What was it like? "The lighting was different, and that skip pass from left to right we had to be on target or else it was going into the audience. I was like, 'No loose ball, don't go after them. Don't jump off the stage.'" - Former Liberty guard Vickie Johnson, in 2011 Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
