SEOUL - Samsung Electronics Co. maintained its lead in the global smartphone market in the second quarter, supported by sales of its competitively priced Galaxy A models, industry data showed on Tuesday, Yonhap News Agency reported.
According to data from market tracker Canalys, Samsung accounted for 19 per cent of the global smartphone market in terms of shipments. A visitor examines the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 smartphone at a Samsung store in Seoul on July 10, 2025. (Photo by Jung Yeon-je / AFP)
iPhone maker Apple Inc. ranked second with 16 per cent, followed by China's Xiaomi Corp., which took up 15 per cent.
Samsung was the only smartphone maker that posted an on-year growth of 3 per cent, while Apple declined by 2 per cent and Xiaomi remained unchanged.
The global smartphone market recorded its first decline in six quarters, shrinking by 1 per cent amid a slower-than-expected recovery in consumer demand and economic uncertainties.
However, the impact of the US government's tariff policies, coupled with healthy inventory levels of newly released devices, could impact the supply and demand in the market, Canalys said, leaving room for growth in the second half of the year. - BERNAMA-YONHAP

Samsung Broadens AI Options for Galaxy Smartphones

Samsung Electronics is ramping up its efforts to bring a broader range of artificial intelligence services to its next-generation Galaxy smartphones. The South Korean tech giant is actively negotiating with leading AI firms, including OpenAI and Perplexity AI, to integrate their technologies into its upcoming Galaxy devices. This move marks a push beyond Google's Gemini, which currently powers much of the Android AI ecosystem. According to Choi Won-Joon, president and chief operating officer of Samsung's mobile division, the company is determined to offer as many choices as possible to consumers. 'We are talking to multiple vendors,' Choi said in a recent interview at Samsung's Suwon headquarters. 'As long as these AI agents are competitive and can provide the best user experiences, we are open to any AI agent out there.' Samsung is reportedly close to finalising a deal to invest in Perplexity AI, which would include integrating the company's app and assistant into future Galaxy devices. The move mirrors Apple's recent strategy of enhancing its AI capabilities by sourcing innovations from external developers. Choi also confirmed that Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S26 series, due next year, will likely feature a broader range of AI services. This follows the tech firm's wider ambition to give users more personalised and flexible experiences across its devices. In addition to AI, Samsung is evaluating chip options for the Galaxy S26. The company is weighing up between Qualcomm processors and its own in-house Exynos 2600 chip. The recently launched Galaxy Z Flip 7 was the first Samsung foldable to feature the Exynos chipset, as the company aims to reduce reliance on Qualcomm while improving its internal chip performance. Choi also addressed the competitive landscape in foldable phones, welcoming the expected entry of Apple into the segment. Bloomberg previously reported that Apple plans to release its first folding iPhone in 2026, based on a design similar to Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold and incorporating foldable OLED panels supplied by Samsung Display. 'This is just the beginning of making these phones go mainstream,' said Choi. He added that Apple's arrival in the foldable category would be a positive development for the industry as a whole. BTS agency raided over fraud claims

Industry giant: A woman taking photos in front of the signage for HYBE, the agency behind K-pop megastars BTS, displayed outside the company's headquarters in Seoul. — AFP HYBE, the agency behind K-pop superstars BTS, was raided by police in connection with alleged fraudulent trading involving its founder Bang Si-hyuk, investigators said. 'We are conducting a search and seizure at HYBE's headquarters in Yongsan district,' Seoul police said in a brief statement. Bang, the mastermind behind BTS, is under investigation over allegations that he misled early investors to reap illicit profits from the company's 2020 initial public offering. He is accused of gaining around 200 billion won (RM613.3mil) through the process, according to local reports. HYBE has denied Bang committed any wrongdoing. 'We will dutifully clarify that the listing at the time was carried out in compliance with all relevant laws and regulations,' the company said in early July. It pledged 'active cooperation' with authorities to get to the bottom of the case. Bang allegedly misled HYBE's early investors, who held pre-IPO shares, by telling them in 2019 he had no plans to take the company public. He then allegedly encouraged them to sell their shares to private equity funds when in fact IPO plan was in the making. HYBE went public in 2020, after the shareholders sold their stakes. The 52-year-old is accused of secretly striking a deal with the private equity funds to receive a portion of the profits they made from selling shares following the IPO. The investigation comes as all seven BTS members complete their mandatory military service and prepare for a comeback next year. HYBE announced this month that a new album and world tour were scheduled for 2026. — AFP

Argentine Man wins case against Google over unauthorized naked photo

Published on: Friday, July 25, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jul 25, 2025 By: AFP Text Size: A sign is posted on the exterior of a building on the Google headquarters campus on July 23, 2025 in Mountain View, California. - Getty Images via AFP BUENOS AIRES: A court in Argentina has ordered Google to pay compensation to a man whose naked image was captured and displayed on Google Street View. The incident, which occurred in 2017, showed the man in his private yard behind a two-meter wall, exposing him to public ridicule. The plaintiff, a policeman, argued that the image harmed his dignity, as his house number and street name were also visible. Despite an earlier ruling dismissing his claim, an appeals court found that Google had violated his privacy. The judges awarded him the equivalent of $12,500, stating that the intrusion was unjustified. 'This involves an image of a person that was not captured in a public space but within the confines of their home, behind a fence taller than the average-sized person. The invasion of privacy... is blatant,' the court wrote. The judges emphasized that Google's policy of blurring faces and license plates showed awareness of privacy obligations, yet failed to protect the man's dignity in this case. Google had argued that the wall was not high enough to prevent visibility, but the court rejected this defense. The ruling also cleared telecom company Cablevision SA and news site El Censor of liability, noting they had merely highlighted Google's error. 'No one wants to appear exposed to the world as the day they were born,' the judges remarked, reinforcing the importance of privacy rights. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
