Boost for development, economy: Nizam
Published on: Sun, May 11, 2025 Text Size: Assistant Minister to the Sabah Chief Minister, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan THE 2025 Madani Rakyat Programme (PMR) serves as a development catalyst and has the potential to boost the local economy, said Assistant Minister to the Sabah Chief Minister, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan. The Apas Assemblyman said the initiative delivers government services to the people to help them raise their living standards. 'When large-scale programmes like this are brought to Tawau, we get upgrades in many aspects — particularly in street lighting... roads and other infrastructure. It also creates business opportunities for local entrepreneurs in the district and surrounding areas to set up stalls to promote their products. 'Although PMR runs for only three days (May 9 to 11), the benefits to the people do not end when the programme concludes. I hope all ministries and agencies involved will continue to serve and support those needing various guidance,' he said. He thanked the Performance Acceleration and Coordination Unit (Pacu), the Prime Minister's Office and the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry (Kuskop) for choosing Tawau to host the programme this year. 'The programme was held in Kota Kinabalu last year. Many people from the east coast of Sabah could not attend due to the distance (about 450km),' he said, urging Tawau residents to take the opportunity to attend the event and get information on the services offered by federal and state agencies. 'PMR significantly benefits urban and rural communities by providing the public direct access to government agency services. This programme serves as a platform for interaction between the people and the Government while directly conveying the principles of the Madani policies,' he added. Meanwhile, over 100 products specially flown from Perlis are featured at the 2025 Madani Rakyat Programme (PMR) here, including garam belacan (fruit dip), belacan madu (shrimp paste), fermented fish and cordial made from Harumanis mango. Administrative Assistant for the Entrepreneurship Portfolio at the Perlis State Secretary's Office, Syazana Afiqah Nahar, said the Sabah PMR is an ideal platform to showcase Perlis's products and heritage to Sabahans and promote the State's tourism industry in conjunction with Visit Perlis 2024–2025 campaign. 'Among the products are various types of belacan…and Harumanis cordial, produced by the Koperasi Pemulihan Dalam Komuniti Anak Istimewa Perlis, a cooperative which plays an active role in supporting the development of children with special needs and disabilities in Perlis,' she said. Syazana Afiqah said they are also promoting tourist attractions in Perlis through various souvenirs, including fridge magnets that highlight the unique features of these locations. 'We hope programmes like this can provide an opportunity for the people of Sabah to get to know Perlis better,' she said. A visitor, Nuri Juliana Majuntis, 45, said she bought the fermented lampam fish, which brought back the nostalgia that reminds her of the visit to the State two years ago. 'I love Perlis fermented lampam fish. The taste is unique and unlike other fermented fish. I'm so happy to be able to buy it here again. I've purchased a lot to keep and share with my family,' she added. Irmawati Abdul Kadir, 38, said she was interested in the Harumanis cordial, which she claimed had the authentic taste of the state's famous Harumanis mango. 'When I heard that it's made from the famous Harumanis mango from Perlis, I immediately wanted to buy it. Unfortunately, the stock is limited. I'll try to order it online,' she said. The booth, managed by the Perlis Economic Planning Division, is in the sales section of PMR 2025. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Govt spent RM21mil on Madani Raya Celebrations in 2024, 2025
KUALA LUMPUR: The federal government spent over RM21 million on organising Madani Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations in 2024 and 2025. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said all costs were fully borne by the federal government as part of its social investment to strengthen public engagement and reinforce the spirit of unity in the Madani framework. He said no financial contributions were received from private entities or government-linked companies (GLCs) for the festivities in either year. "The actual expenditure for the 2024 Madani Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations held in seven states was RM10,050,196.66, with an average of RM1,435,742.38 per state. "For 2025, the total expenditure across seven locations is RM10,928,222.53, averaging RM1,561,174.65 per location," he said. He said this in response to Abdul Latiff Abdul Rahman (PN–Kuala Krai) on the expenditure for each open house and Madani Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration programme organised by the government. He said the costs covered essential items such as logistics, public catering and promotional efforts to ensure wide community participation, especially as the events were held on a large scale across multiple states. He said that starting from 2023, the open house celebrations had been expanded nationwide. In contrast, the 2022 event was limited to attendees in the Klang Valley, yet incurred a higher cost of RM11 million. "The open house was part of the government's efforts to strengthen the relationship between the people and leaders through an inclusive, people-friendly approach that reaches all levels of society. "These events are not merely festive celebrations but serve as important platforms to foster national unity, promote harmony and encourage interaction and mutual understanding among Malaysia's multiracial society," he said.

Preserve national unity and peace for independence, urges Ewon
PENAMPANG: Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick has called on Malaysians, particularly in Sabah, to uphold the true meaning of independence by preserving unity, well-being, and peace. He emphasised that harmony and stability are crucial for sustainable national development and sovereignty. 'This all starts with cooperation, unity, and harmony because if the people are at odds with one another, unable to cooperate or be in harmony, how can national sovereignty be defended?' Ewon said after launching the Sabah Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang 2025 convoy. The event, organised by the Sabah Information Department, involves 20 vehicles and 60 participants covering 2,500 kilometres across 75 locations in 20 days. The convoy began in Penampang and will conclude in Tuaran on Aug 23. Ewon encouraged Sabahans to join the 'One House, One Jalur Gemilang' initiative by displaying the national flag at their homes. He also highlighted the relevance of this year's National Day theme, 'Malaysia MADANI, Rakyat Disantuni,' aligning it with the 13th Malaysia Plan's goals of uplifting the people's dignity. 'I hope this theme reaches the grassroots. I am confident that the people understand what the government is doing, which is not only to care for them but also to champion and uplift their dignity,' he said. - Bernama

140 contingents to enliven National Day parade in Sabah
Tun Musa (centre), Masidi (fourth left) and others during the courtesy call. – Information Department photo KOTA KINABALU (Aug 5): An estimated 140 parade contingents are set to enliven the 2025 Sabah National Day celebrations. State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Masidi Manjun stated that the contingents comprise government agencies, schools, voluntary organizations and uniformed units. 'What makes this year special is that, for the first time, the celebrations will be attended by Head of State Tun Musa Aman, adding greater significance to the event. 'Tun Musa is expected to arrive at 7:30am, so we anticipate official events will take place between 7:30am and 10:30am. 'We also expect public attendance to mirror last year's, where strategic spots along the parade route will be filled early. 'Therefore, I urge all Sabahans to come together in celebrating and attending the event on August 31 at Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens, to demonstrate our love for our nation and for Sabah,' he told reporters after paying a courtesy call on Tun Musa at Istana Seri Kinabalu on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Masidi, who is also the chairman of the 2025 Sabah National Day Main Committee, said this year's theme, 'Malaysia Madani: People Embraced' (Malaysia Madani: Rakyat Disantuni), resonates deeply, especially with leaders. 'This theme is profoundly relevant, particularly as a call to leaders and those entrusted with positions of authority to always be on the ground, engaging with and caring for the people. 'Thus, this theme urges leaders to be present among the people, show compassion, and visibly demonstrate their presence as the pillars upon whom the people rely to realize their aspirations,' he added. He also advised the public to continue flying the Jalur Gemilang and the Sabah state flag as symbols of love for Malaysia and the state of Sabah. Also present were Assistant Finance Minister Datuk Tan Lee Fatt and Kota Kinabalu City Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah.
