Karnataka Govt suspends 3 police inspectors for falsely implicating tribal man in wife's murder
The Karnataka Government Sunday suspended three police officers for falsely implicating a tribal man on the charge of killing his wife in the state's Kodagu district in 2021.
Kurubara Suresh, 35, a labourer from a tribal community, was arrested in June 2021 for 'killing' his wife, and spent two years in jail. However, later it was found that his wife was alive, and had been living with her boyfriend.
The police officers who have been suspended are B G Prakash, Mahesh Kumar, and Prakash Yathinamani, inspectors in Kushalanagar and Yelawala and Jayapura, respectively. Vishnuvardhana N, Superintendent of Police, Mysuru, confirmed to The Indian Express that the officers had been suspended, and an inquiry was pending.
Reacting to the suspension order, B S Pandu Poojari, the lawyer who represents Suresh, said they were not satisfied with the suspension order. 'We want the government to initiate criminal proceedings against those accused officials to give justice to the victim,' he added.\
Suresh filed a missing-person complaint at the Kushalnagar Rural Police Station in Kodagu district after his wife, Mallige, went missing in November 2020. He was arrested by the Bettadapura police in Mysuru district on charges of murdering his wife after a woman's skeleton was discovered, leading to his two-year-long incarceration. He was released on bail in September 2024.
On April 1 this year, Suresh's friends found out that his wife was alive, and had been with her boyfriend 30 km away from their village. They immediately informed the police.
Later, the Mysuru district court directed the police to submit a report. Mallige appeared before the judge, and stated that his wife was alive. The court then ordered the police to drop the charges against Suresh, and remove his name as accused or suspect from the chargesheet.
Recently, he also approached the Karnataka High Court seeking Rs 5 crore in compensation after spending nearly 18 months in jail following his wrongful arrest. The police are yet to ascertain the identity of the body, which they discovered in an area under the Bettadapura police limits.

260 autorickshaw drivers in Bengaluru booked for overcharging, illegal operations
The Karnataka Transport Department Monday impounded 98 autorickshaws and booked 260 drivers in Bengaluru in a day-long crackdown against violating transport regulations. The operation, which began at 8 am, involved 22 special investigation teams from the Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across the city. The teams took action against violations, including charging fares exceeding those fixed by the government and operating without valid permits. The initiative was launched following a surge in complaints from commuters and as part of enforcing uniform fare structures across the city. The crackdown comes days after Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy directed Transport Commissioner Yogesh A M to initiate action against app-based autorickshaw aggregators for overcharging. The minister had directed transport officers to draft and develop an effective action plan, which may include permit cancellation and criminal cases against offending autorickshaw drivers. The highest number of violations was recorded in the Bangalore South division, where 48 autorickshaws were booked and 18 vehicles were seized. Bangalore West followed with 36 cases and 13 vehicles impounded, while Bangalore Central and East each reported 30 violations. Electronic City and Bangalore North reported 26 and 25 cases, respectively. Areas such as Jnana Bharathi, Yelahanka, K R Puram, Chandapur, and Devanahalli were also covered in the drive. A transport department officer said, 'Cases were registered not just for overcharging, but also for lack of fitness certificate, driving licence, and other documentation. A detailed report has been sought from the respective RTOs, based on which we will take suitable action against aggregator platforms.' Meanwhile, the Karnataka High Court in 2022 granted interim protection to aggregator platforms, including Uber, Ola, and Rapido, restraining the state government from taking any coercive action against them. The relief comes in connection with a case challenging the legality of operating autorickshaws under licences originally issued for cab services. The court's order allows the platforms to continue operations for the time being, while the matter remains under judicial consideration. However, the transport department has clarified that action is being taken only against fare violations and other existing offences, which are now being enforced. The crackdown also comes after app-based autorickshaw aggregators hiked the fares in the wake of the ban on bike taxis on June 16. According to the autorickshaw fare revision in December 2021, the government set a fare of Rs 30 for the first 2 kilometres and Rs 15 for every subsequent kilometre. In 2022, the Karnataka High Court capped aggregator commissions at 10 per cent to ensure that fares remain affordable and transparent. As per the court's October 2022 ruling, app-based autorickshaw aggregators are allowed to charge only 10 per cent above the government-notified fare, plus 5 per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST). App-based autorickshaw services such as Ola, Uber, and Rapido have faced criticism for non-compliance, often charging fares that exceed Rs 70 for short rides (e.g., 1.5 km) due to additional charges like surge pricing, congestion fees, pickup fees or optional tips. To avoid paying alimony and child support, man claimed he was unemployed. Then, his wife filed an RTI
After an RTI reply revealed that her ex-husband had an annual income of Rs 27 lakh, the Jharkhand High Court has granted a woman and her autistic son a total of Rs 90,000 to be paid by the man each month. This includes Rs 50,000 as monthly maintenance to the woman and Rs 40,000 child support to the son. The man had earlier allegedly submitted an affidavit saying that he was unemployed. The petitioner woman approached the High Court in 2023 against the Rs 12-lakh one-time alimony awarded to her by a family court. According to the petitioner, within a couple of years of marriage, she allegedly faced cruelty and domestic abuse, along with demands for dowry, including cash and an SUV. In 2012, the couple had a son, who was later diagnosed with autism. She alleged that her husband cut off communication and refused to support her or the child. In 2014, the woman lodged an online complaint with the National Commission for Women, citing domestic violence and abandonment. Despite an attempt at reconciliation in 2015 at a Bhopal police station, no resolution was reached. Advocate Rakesh Kumar Gupta, the petitioner's counsel, told The Indian Express that in 2016, she had approached the family court in Ranchi, seeking divorce on the grounds of cruelty and desertion. 'After this, the court had granted a one-time alimony of Rs 12 lakh and Rs 8,000 a month for the son's maintenance,' he said. Dissatisfied with the amount, especially in light of her son's special needs and therapy expenses, she appealed in the Jharkhand High Court. While the husband had claimed during family court proceedings that he was unemployed, the appellant produced an RTI response from the Income Tax Department showing that he was employed with an IT company in Mumbai and earned a gross annual income of Rs 27 lakh in FY 2022–23 (approximately Rs 2.3 lakh per month after deductions). 'Despite the husband's false affidavit claiming no income, the RTI reply showed he was earning Rs 2.31 lakh per month. Based on this, we moved the High Court, which modified the earlier district court order and granted a total monthly maintenance of Rs 90,000 — Rs 50,000 to the wife and Rs 40,000 to the autistic child,' the advocate said. The High Court took this on record and expressed concern that the family court had accepted the husband's claim that he was unemployed without further verification. The High Court also observed that while the wife was a guest teacher in Ranchi, this could not be seen as regular employment, especially given her full-time caregiving duties for a child with autism. A Division Bench of Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad and Justice Rajesh Kumar noted that the minor child, who has 75% intellectual disability, requires long-term specialised care and medical attention. The court took serious note of the father's alleged failure to take active interest in the child's welfare and remarked that 'desertion of wife is one thing, but desertion of an autistic child is not only a moral failure but a legal default'. The court also considered the estimated cost of around Rs 53,000 per month, submitted by the petitioner, which includes a child requiring continuous occupational and speech therapy, special schooling, and a structured diet and medical care. Gupta called the High Court's order a milestone. 'This case is not just about alimony. It's about acknowledging the long-term and unique challenges a single mother faces while raising a child with autism… It's a socially important ruling,' he said.

Supreme Court grants Tamil Nadu MLA Jagan Moorthy anticipatory bail in abduction case
The Supreme Court Monday granted anticipatory bail to Tamil Nadu MLA M Jagan Moorthy in the case of the alleged abduction of a teenager in the state's Thiruvallur district, and said 'the matter requires consideration.' Issuing notice to the Tamil Nadu Police, the bench of Justices Manoj Mishra and N Kotiswar Singh directed, 'In the meantime, if the petitioner is arrested in connection with FIR No.101/2025 registered at PS – Thiruvalangadu (renumbered as C.R. No.1/2025), he shall be released on personal bond of Rs.25,000/-, subject to the undertaking that he shall cooperate in the investigation and will not threaten the witnesses or tamper the evidence.' Moorthy, the Kilvaithinankuppam AIADMK MLA, approached the top court after the Madras High Court dismissed his plea on June 27. Appearing for him, Senior Advocate Siddharth Luthra submitted, 'There is no dispute that the abductee was recovered and not from the possession or control of the applicant.' Luthra contended the legislator 'has been implicated for malafide reasons by alleging that he had a hand in the abduction' and that 'even assuming that the applicant interacted with one of the parties to the dispute, that may be considered for the purposes of settling the issue.' Luthra added, 'In any event, no custodial interrogation is required.' The Madras High Court also ordered the arrest of H M Jayaram, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Tamil Nadu, in the matter, but it was set aside by the Supreme Court. Moorthy and Jayaram were 'implicated' in the May 10 abduction of an 18-year-old boy in Thiruvallur. The boy was reportedly abducted by a group seeking information about his elder brother, who had married a young woman from Theni district against her family's wishes.
