On campuses, ‘good riddance' vs murmurs against closure notice on union rooms
In the recent past, maintaining control over union rooms and student activities triggered numerous clashes across campuses. From organising Saraswati Puja at Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri Law College to vandalism at Jadavpur University — in every case, union rooms were considered to be the root of all troubles.
Calcutta University interim VC Santa Datta De's decision to lock union rooms across seven campuses after an incident at the Rajabazar campus — where some former students reportedly consumed alcohol in the union room — had prompted a student agitation.
Datta said: "The decision we took has been proven absolutely right after the high court order. I raised my voice against all such illegal activities in union rooms. Now it has become easier for other principals to lock union rooms following the high court order.
However, I believe that there should be academicians in the college governing bodies instead of local political leaders; only then can political influence on the campuses be restricted."

Several principals across colleges seemed quite relieved after the order came. Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri Day College principal Pankaj Roy said: "I tried several times to shut the union room but it became difficult due to a section of students. We closed the union room immediately after the court order." Another principal, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "There has been no union elections since 2017. We are helpless because we cannot instruct students to vacate union rooms because past students and even local leaders have free access there.
However, after this order, it will be easier for us to restrict such activities."
On the other hand, leaders of different campuses were somewhat upset. One TMCP neta, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "We organize several activities that we cannot stop because several students need help for many issues." Another TMCP neta said: "We used to sit in the union room during college hours; now if college doesn't permit it, we will not sit there. This is not a big deal."

Telangana farmers, buyers await Rs 120 cr refunds; Dharani delays drag on for 3 years; legal action likely
AI image HYDERABAD: Even as the Telangana govt claims to have addressed several glitches in the Dharani land registration portal, a major problem remains unresolved: Refunds for cancelled slot bookings. Thousands of farmers and property buyers are still waiting for their money-an estimated 120 crore-to be returned for transactions that never went through. This is confirmed by official sources themselves. She booked a slot on Dharani in May 2022 to purchase four acres of land and paid 8.4 lakh towards stamp duty and registration charges. However, she had to cancel the transaction a month later, in June 2022, due to unforeseen reasons. Despite multiple follow-ups over three years, Sugunavathi did not receive a refund. Left with no option, she finally approached the high court, which recently directed the govt to refund the 8.4 lakh within a month. "As per the rules, if the slot is cancelled within six months, the district collector is responsible for processing the refund. After six months, it is the duty of the inspector general and commissioner of the registration department," Gummi Rajkumar Reddy, a lawyer and social activist, told TOI. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why seniors are rushing to get this Internet box – here's why! The Congress govt, after coming to power, replaced the previous BRS regime's Dharani portal with a new land administration system called Bhu Bharati. The move was aimed at addressing long-standing complaints about Dharani, including lack of transparency, technical glitches, and difficulties faced by farmers during land transactions, official sources said. Insiders said the state's ongoing financial crunch is a major reason why refunds have been delayed, and there's no timeline for when they will be cleared. With registration costs running into lakhs in Hyderabad and even significant amounts in rural areas, affected citizens say the delay is causing serious financial strain. "The govt fixed technical issues in the Dharani portal, but what about the money it owes the people," asked an aggrieved farmer. Despite repeated requests, many of them have been waiting to get back their registration fees and stamp duties. There is growing frustration that burden is being unfairly shifted to individuals who followed due process. Many are considering legal action as their only option to recover their rightful dues.

SC green-lights deportations: Trump admin wins key immigration battle; 8 detained in Djibouti cleared for transfer
US Supreme Court allows for migrant deportation Supreme Court on Thursday cleared way for the Trump administration to deport a group of migrants who had been held for weeks at a US military base in Djibouti, ruling in favour of the government in a closely watched case. The unsigned order came just days after the court allowed the administration to deport certain migrants to countries other than their homeland with minimal notice. June 23 decision triggered a legal battle over whether the same policy could be applied to a specific group of eight migrants detained in Djibouti. A federal judge in Massachusetts had ruled that the June decision did not apply to these eight migrants, citing a separate court order that the administration had not appealed. The ruling temporarily blocked their removal, prompting the administration to seek emergency relief from the Supreme Court. On Thursday, the court reversed the lower court's injunction and allowed the deportations to proceed, over the objections of two liberal justices. The migrants, who include individuals from Cuba, Vietnam and Laos, had been diverted to Djibouti while en route to South Sudan. They were being held in a converted Conex shipping container on the base. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo The administration argued that the lower court's ruling conflicted with the Supreme Court's earlier decision, and the majority agreed. In its order, the court stated that the June 23 decision applied to the case 'in full,' and rejected the argument that the Massachusetts ruling created a separate legal shield. 'Such a remedy would serve to 'coerce' the government into 'compliance' and would be unenforceable given our stay of the underlying injunction,' the court wrote.
