Broncos have two major items to cross off checklist before start of training camp

Yahoo5 days ago
Less than two weeks out from the start of training camp, the Denver Broncos have yet to sign either of their top two draft picks to contracts.
The Broncos will kick off training camp ahead of the 2025 season on Friday, July 25. To this point, first-round pick Jahdae Barron and second-round pick RJ Harvey remain unsigned. While several teams have yet to sign their second-round picks to a deal, the Broncos and Cincinnati Bengals are the only teams in the league to have gotten a new deal done with neither.

Though the situation between the Broncos and Barron is nowhere near as contentious as the one between the Bengals and their first-round pick, Shemar Stewart, it would still be in the best interest of the team to get a deal done soon. It would not be ideal to open camp without Barron and Harvey under contract, as every rep is precious, but that goes double for rookies.
Guaranteed money — and how much of it — seems to be the hangup with these contracts. While there is nothing to suggest that the Broncos won't get these deals done before the start of camp, it has to be considered at least slightly concerning that it hasn't happened yet.
Barron is expected to be a huge part of the Denver defense in year two. While he wasn't on the radar for the Broncos by many within the draft community, he fell to the team with the No. 20 overall pick in the draft and George Paton and Sean Payton couldn't turn that down.

In the second round, the Broncos selected Harvey despite many running backs who were rated higher still being on the board. That pick was made because Payton sees something in him that he feels many other front offices are overlooking.
The point is, the team was excited to get these two players on the roster, so hammer out the details, work with them on good deals in guaranteed money and get signatures on those contracts. If that doesn't happen within the next two weeks, the Broncos will open camp without them.

Jonathan Gannon is rebuilding the Arizona Cardinals playbook

Perhaps Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon believes a few playbook changes could help the team get over the hump in 2025. Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon is prepared to take the team franchise on an incline after 2024. With a roster full of dynamic talent on both offense and defense, Gannon has openly expressed his intent to restructure and expand the team playbook moving ahead. Gannon likely conveyed a few constructive comments toward offensive coordinator Drew Petzing who was piloting the team offensive play-calling last season. Petzing seemed to hit a wall in the last few games, especially in the passing attack. The Cardinals finished just No. 18 in team passing yards per game last season. Wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. and Greg Dortch were targeted at a combined total of 166 times throughout the season, with Harrison Jr. averaging 14.3 yards per catch and Dortch finishing with 9.2 yards per catch. An improved passing attack should definitely be an area of focus for the franchise heading into 2025. Ultimately, an optimized passing attack should minimize the interception totals for quarterback Kyler Murray and raise his general morale. Gannon explained in a press conference after Day 1 of training camp that the coaching staff will be picking up where they'd left off last season. In short, the many highlights on both sides of the ball need to be revisited and the bloopers on both sides of the ball need to be expunged. Ultimately, Gannon may want to abandon some of Petzing's tendencies and opt for a more traditional play style that both minimizes difficulty on third-downs and makes manageable chances for running backs Trey Benson and James Conner in the rushing attack. Changes on defense may also arise, including the usage of 4-3 instead of 3-4 on early downs. Tennis star Anna Kalinskaya's dog rushes court after pro wins match

Russian tennis star Anna Kalinskaya defeated Emma Raducanu in the Citi D.C. Open on Saturday, and a familiar face joined her on the court to celebrate the victory. Kalinskaya's dog, a dachshund named Bella, ran onto the court. It was the second time the dog had come onto the hard court. Kalinskaya celebrated with Bella following a victory over Clara Tauson on Friday night. The happy canine was seen getting a bit rambunctious as it ran over to Kalinskaya. The tennis pro then held up her dog to the crowd to a round of applause from those still in the stadium. Kalinskaya will take on Leylah Fernandez in the final on Sunday. She defeated Raducanu, 6-4, 6-3 and topped Tauson 6-3, 7-5, on her way to the Fernandez matchup. Fernandez knocked off Elena Rybakina in the semis, and Taylor Townsend in the quarterfinals. Kalinskaya is ranked 48th in the Women's Tennis Association rankings, with her highest mark being 11th in the world. She has one singles title under her belt and is 307-189 in career singles matches. Tauson ousted Kalinskaya in the round of 64 at Wimbledon earlier this month. She lost in the first round of the French Open back May to Marie Bouzkova.

Kelvin Yeboah scores 2 penalties late in 2nd half and Minnesota escapes with 2-1 win over St. Louis

Kelvin Yeboah converted two penalties as the second half wound down, lifting Minnesota to a 2-1 victory over St. Louis on Saturday night. Yeboah's first PK, in the 75th minute, came after Chris Durkin was shown the red card. Yeboah blasted a shot past Roman Bürki to the lower left zone. With St. Louis down a man, Minnesota kept the pressure on and a foul by Jaziel Orozco set up Yeboah's second PK — a blast past Bürki to the middle right zone just before stoppage time. Yeboah has nine goals this season. St. Louis' goal also came on a penalty, Eduard Löwen converting in the 36th minute. Dayne St. Clair had three saves for Minnesota and Bürki stopped two shots. Minnesota (12-5-8) ended a two-match winless streak and remains in third place in the Western Conference. Löwen's penalty is the only score for St. Louis (9-11-4) in the last two matches. Minnesota defeat St. Louis 3-0 earlier in the season and is 5-1-0 in the series between the two. MLS is on a break Sunday through Aug. 8 for Leagues Cup matches.
