Dessert shop owner fined £12k after revolting find as soon as inspectors arrived
A dessert shop has come under fire after food inspectors discovered a sickening mouse infestation as soon as they walked through the doors.
Javid Shah, the owner of Dessert Lounge in Stockport, was slapped with a fine of just under £12,000, for putting his customers at risk. Stockport Council took the businessman to court after he demonstrated "serious failure to protect public health."
Shocking images revealed the dire state of the dessert shop, which included mouse droppings sprawled around the floor and cupboards. In one picture, droppings could be seen next to syrup bottles. Inspectors stressed that the infestation was severe and said they had noticed droppings as soon as they entered the shop. They were also found in food packaging and plastic cups.
On May 9, Mr Shah pleaded guilty to seven food hygiene offences after the disgusting conditions were found during a routine inspection, reports Manchester Evening News. He was charged with failing to protect food and the premises from pest contamination, not keeping equipment and surfaces clean and disinfected, failing to ensure food packaging was not exposed to contamination, and not maintaining procedures based on HACCP principles.
He was fined £3,500 and ordered to pay £7,000 in costs and a £1,400 victim surcharge. In addition to the infestation, inspectors also found an unsatisfactory standard of cleaning across the establishment. This included no effective pest control, as well as people handling food not receiving proper training or supervision.
In addition, there was also not an accessible wash basin with hot and cold water, or somewhere for people to hygienically dry their hands. Cllr Dan Oliver, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Public Protection, said: "The appalling conditions found at Dessert Lounge represent a serious failure to protect public health.
"This kind of negligence is completely unacceptable, and we will continue to take strong enforcement action against any business that puts customers at risk. I'm pleased that improvements have now been made, but this prosecution sends a clear message that we will always prioritise the safety of residents and visitors when it comes to food hygiene."
Since the legal action the business has taken steps to address the serious concerns which were raised. An inspection has since been carried out on March 4, and the business was awarded a Food Hygiene Rating of four.

The Lancashire teen was visiting the Spanish island with his friends Lucy Law and Brad Hargreaves and attended the NRG music festival on June 16 last year. He disappeared on the morning of June 17 after travelling to a remote Airbnb following a night out - and his body was found in Juan Lopez Ravine on July 15 after a major search. Brad, who is also known as Bradley Geoghegan, gave evidence during an inquest into Jay's death at Preston Coroner's Court this morning. Appearing in court in person, Brad told coroner Dr James Adeley that he, Jay and Lucy had met Ayub Qassim and Steven 'Rocky' Roccas through another contact - Brandon Hodgson - who had known the pair for some time. On the night before Jay disappeared, Brad said the pals had been out for drinks until 6pm before heading to the festival, where they "split up". He recalled Jay being "kicked out" of a club, describing him as being "so drunk he couldn't stand up", but when the group reconvened later on he was "in a better state", the Manchester Evening News reports. Describing his friend as "giddy", Brad told the court Jay had taken ecstasy and cocaine on that night. He then recalled the final conversation he had face-to-face with Jay at Magic Mike's take-away, where Jay said he was "gonna stay" with Ayub and Rocky. Brad said Jay told him he was going to their accommodation, and that Ayub and Rocky would "bring him back" to the apartment he had been staying at at 12pm the next day. The inquest heard Jay video called Brad from the Airbnb in Masca, where he "showed the bed they had made for him." He later made another call on Snapchat while he was "walking down a road" - during the conversation, Jay told his friend he would call him back, but that was the final time they spoke, Brad said. He told the inquest: "At that point I might have been feeling a bit worried. He said 'I'm gonna come back down' and he was asking if we had any drinks left at the apartment." Brad asked Jay how far he was from the apartment, and having checked his phone Jay replied "14 hours' walk". Brad told the court: "I said wow, why are you so far away, get a taxi back. He then said 'I'll ring you back' and that was the last time I spoke to Jay." Later in the day, Ayub also gave evidence to the inquest and the coroner asked him about the watch Jay had allegedly stolen - which he denied. He told the court: "Jay did not steal no watch. I can say one hundred per cent." It comes after former detective Mark Williams-Thomas said Jay sent a cryptic text to a friend at 2.35am, before he went missing, in which he wrote: "They've got a marker on me." His friend replied to the text at 3am, saying: "You need to go home lad you're off your barnet." Jay then replied by writing: "You think I'm going home you must be disabled." At this stage, the investigator said, Jay "was very heavily under the influence of drink and drugs." According to Mr Williams-Thomas, it is possible that "some paranoia" was present "because his friends were saying he was not making much sense and being argumentative which was very unlike Jay." He added: "Jay had no official marker on him, and yes he was around people selling drugs and he could have upset people that morning because of his state." The inquest will continue on Friday.

Jay Slater 'went to Airbnb to sell stolen Rolex watch' before death, says friend
Jay Slater's friend has given evidence in the teen's inquest after his death in Tenerife. Jay Slater told his friend that he was going 'to sell a watch' at a remote Airbnb that he had previously ' taken ', his inquest has heard. Brad Hargreaves, Jay's 19-year-old pal, has been giving evidence at Jay's inquest in Preston this morning, reports the Manchester Evening News. Jay, an apprentice bricklayer from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, was found dead at the Juan Lopez Ravine in Tenerife, on July 15 last year. He had gone missing on June 17, after leaving a party in Playa de las Americas and heading north to a remote Airbnb in Masca, before attempting to return on foot. Speculation around whether Jay had stolen a Rolex watch was widely reported at the time, while it was also discussed at the previous hearing of Jay's inquest in May. Speaking to the coroner this morning (July 24), Brad said he was sent a Snapchat by Jay, in which he admitted he had ' taken a watch'. In another Snapchat message, Jay said he was going back to the Airbnb in Masca with Ayub Qassim and Steven 'Rocky' Roccas. Brad told the court: "I didn't think anything of it because there are a lot of people selling fake stuff on the strip. Loads of watches.' Brad told the inquest that Jay said he was going 'to sell a watch' while at the Airbnb. Asked why he didn't ask Jay more about this, Brad replied: "Because I was under the influence of drugs." But, in his own evidence to the court, Ayub said that Jay hadn't stolen the watch. He told the court there was a 'Romanian looky looky guy' who was selling fake watches. The man tried selling a watch to Ayub and he said 'nah, I don't want that, it's fake '. Then he tried selling it to Jay.' 'One thing I can say is that Jay didn't steal no watch,' he tells the court. Asked why Jay would be saying he had stolen a watch if he hadn't, Ayub said it could have been bravado. 'When you're younger you might exaggerate things," he said. "But one hundred per cent I didn't see a watch getting taken, maybe he was just bigging himself up to his pals." Jay, Brad and their mate Lucy Law had been introduced to Ayub and Rocky by another contact, Brandon Hodgson. Brandon can not be located to give evidence, the court heard today. Discussing the watch situation, Brad told the coroner the 'only thing' he knows about it is what Jay said on Snapchat, but he suggested Brandon knew more. "That's why I thought Brandon should be here because he knows a lot more about it than just the Snapchat," he added. Midsomer Murders star to take over from Sheridan Smith in 'gripping' thriller
The lead role for the thriller's third season has been revealed. The Teacher season 2 trailer Midsomer Murders and The Crown actress Victoria Hamilton has landed a role in the third series of The Teacher. The thriller anthology programme, which broadcasts on Channel 5, has previously starred Sheridan Smith and Kara Tointon in lead parts. The compelling first series tracked a teacher accused of sleeping with a student, whilst the second instalment centred on a teacher's lies and deception to hide her affair with a colleague after a pupil vanishes. Victoria, 54, is set to play drama teacher Helen, who is "struggling to keep up with modern social expectations in a reputable private school", according to Radio Times. The plot summary reveals: "Recently promoted to Head of Drama, Helen finds herself being challenged by outspoken pupil Cressida when she stumbles over student Dee's correct pronouns and insists that her class study Shakespeare as opposed to more modern progressive works," reports the Manchester Evening News. "A sinister grudge match quickly develops between teacher and pupil and, when Dee commits suicide following an argument with Helen, Cressida resorts to blackmail to make Helen pay for her 'outdated' views. "As the war intensifies and her world comes crashing down around her, Helen must fight to hold on to both her family and her career before she loses everything." Victoria has formerly appeared in shows including Doctor Foster and The Crown, appeared in Cobra and Life alongside Alison Steadman, and starred in episodes of Midsomer Murders, Call the Midwife, and Jericho. In a 2020 chat with The Times, she discussed the different positions she'd occupied throughout her career, remarking: "I remember in my twenties dreading hitting 40, not because I was worried about ageing, but because I thought, 'Well, that's when careers end, isn't it?'
