Midsomer Murders star to take over from Sheridan Smith in 'gripping' thriller

Midsomer Murders and The Crown actress Victoria Hamilton has landed a role in the third series of The Teacher.
The thriller anthology programme, which broadcasts on Channel 5, has previously starred Sheridan Smith and Kara Tointon in lead parts.
The compelling first series tracked a teacher accused of sleeping with a student, whilst the second instalment centred on a teacher's lies and deception to hide her affair with a colleague after a pupil vanishes.
Victoria, 54, is set to play drama teacher Helen, who is "struggling to keep up with modern social expectations in a reputable private school", according to Radio Times.
The plot summary reveals: "Recently promoted to Head of Drama, Helen finds herself being challenged by outspoken pupil Cressida when she stumbles over student Dee's correct pronouns and insists that her class study Shakespeare as opposed to more modern progressive works," reports the Manchester Evening News.
"A sinister grudge match quickly develops between teacher and pupil and, when Dee commits suicide following an argument with Helen, Cressida resorts to blackmail to make Helen pay for her 'outdated' views.
"As the war intensifies and her world comes crashing down around her, Helen must fight to hold on to both her family and her career before she loses everything."
Victoria has formerly appeared in shows including Doctor Foster and The Crown, appeared in Cobra and Life alongside Alison Steadman, and starred in episodes of Midsomer Murders, Call the Midwife, and Jericho.
In a 2020 chat with The Times, she discussed the different positions she'd occupied throughout her career, remarking: "I remember in my twenties dreading hitting 40, not because I was worried about ageing, but because I thought, 'Well, that's when careers end, isn't it?'
"There was a very real sense in the industry that if you hadn't made it by the time you were 30, forget it. That's changed dramatically, thank God."
Additional casting reveals and information for The Teacher, including its anticipated broadcast date, are yet to be announced.
When The Teacher initially premiered in 2022, it received outstanding praise from viewers and reviewers alike.
The series has also featured stars such as Cecilia Noble, Kelvin Fletcher, Will Mellor and Emmett J. Scanlan.
One viewer commented: "I thought this was an extremely good series, with an interesting plot, unexpected twists and turns, and professionally delivered by all involved."

The star was partnered with professional dancer James Jordan and, being season five of the long-running show, this was the time when Tess Daly and the late Sir Bruce Forsyth were hosts of the show. The judging panel consisted of Arlene Phillips, Craig Revel Horwood, Bruno Tonioli and the late Len Goodman. While Gabby made it through three rounds of the show before she was voted off, she is convinced that she became a hate figure during her time on the ballroom floor. She featured on the series at the same time as her husband, Kenny Logan - was also competing with Gabby's dance partner James' wife Ola Jordan. Wales Online quotes Gabby saying: "I had an amazing experience on Strictly, I was only on it for a few weeks, but I had an amazing experience — but also, a kind of life-changing experience in many ways." She elaborated: "[It] sounds a bit dramatic, and you hear people going 'Strictly changed my life', but this wasn't in a good way." Giving more clarity, she went on: "When you get voted out of Strictly, it's so shocking, because you go in every week starting to work on your following week's dance, and you don't expect to go home." And she revealed she was left being "very much aware that people didn't like" her during her time on the show. She also told Jessica Ennis on the Gold Minds podcast: "It was the fact that obviously people didn't vote for me — and it sounds a bit pathetic — but you realise when it's a reality show that it's about whether people like you. And I was very much aware that people didn't like me. "I was kind of like, they didn't like me enough to vote for me... It was a very sobering kind of experience because in the days afterwards, not only was I dreadfully missing the dancing, but also realising I kind of felt like, 'Oh, what was it about me that people didn't relate to?'" While Gabby and James crashed out in week four, her rugby star husband managed to make it through five more weeks before he too was voted off. Their season was awash with big name star - with Sir Rod Stewart's wife, Penny Lancaster, acting legend Stephanie Beacham, and model bombshell Kelly Brook were among those taking to the dance floor. The finalists that season included EastEnders star Matt Di Angelo and TV presenter Gethin Jones. As part of her latest treatment, Helen underwent polynucleotide cosmetic facial surgery in her latest procedure. It is a type of cosmetic surgery, which uses DNA fragments to help to rejuvenate and revitalise the skin. It gives a youthful and radiant complexion but can initially cause redness, swelling and bruising where they are injected. In 2019, Helen also decided to have Botox and explained how it has made her feel more confident. "I felt super tired from having Delilah and I wanted to feel fresher and more confident in myself. I would take pictures on my phone with the kids and would be shocked how much older I looked where in my head I still feel like I'm 20," she said. "I'm so happy with my Botox and if you're like me and still want to look 23, then it's a good idea." Just a few weeks ago, Helen recalled how she was verbally abused by a man on the Tube for standing up for another woman. She explained how the woman had been harassed by the man and when she stood up for the woman, she was verbally abused too. "He was really awful and I actually felt really intimidated, and I felt like I couldn't say much to him because I did feel really intimidated by him. He said to me, it was like the weirdest thing he could have said, 'You've got so much Botox in your forehead', and I was sat there with an iced coffee, and he was like, 'I'm surprised you can even drink through a straw,'" she recalled.

The Legend of Rooney's Ring review – mythical Wayne and Coleen bust-up becomes mythically silly panto
Sometimes fake news can be fun. Take the time word went around Liverpool that a furious Coleen McLoughlin had taken off Wayne Rooney's engagement ring and thrown it into a bush. The city's detectorists came out in force. Things got so out of hand that the National Trust had to ban treasure seekers from the Formby Point nature reserve for fear the search for the £25,000 ring would disturb the squirrels. The evidence of Coleen being in the squirrel sanctuary, let alone discarding the ring, is on the fictional side of flimsy. Screenwriter turned playwright Helen Serafinowicz has the comic instinct to see how funny this is. She also has the imagination to take it one step further. In The Legend of Rooney's Ring, she reframes an urban myth as a genuine myth. It is set in a netherworld halfway between the Brothers Grimm and JRR Tolkien, where a storybook princess known as C'leen (a sparky Emma Grace Arends) falls in love with a warrior by the unlikely name of Wayne (a brutish John May). It looks as though the obstacle to their romance will be C'leen's regal parents, but the threat is much worse: entering with the menace of Darth Vader is an orange-faced Emperor Trump (a bullying Terry Mynott) who casts a spell on Wayne. For as long as the warrior possesses the ring, he will be irresistible to women. His fate, as the play has it, is to be a fanny magnet. Delivered with the kind of pantomime panache for which this theatre is famed, Stephen Fletcher's production is a brassy mix of broad-brushstroke confrontations and lively pop songs (some more pertinent than others). But pantomimes are sustained by archetypal forces of good and evil, without which the silliness becomes tiresome. That is what happens here: the Rooney's relationship is too shallow to care about and Emperor Trump's real-life counterpart is far more a threat than this cartoonish dolt and his desire to make Liverpool great again. After an opening scene in which wild-haired peasants hunt for the ring, Serafinowicz veers off the thing that made this story funny in the first place. Instead, she turns a promising idea into a two-hour Crackerjack sketch. At Royal Court, Liverpool, until 23 August.
