Former Formula One driver Robert Kubica has achieved the biggest success of his motorsport career as he led Ferrari to their third consecutive win at the traditional Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race.
With the #83 Ferrari crew, Kubica crossed the finish line on Sunday to celebrate the win with team-mates Phil Hanson and Yifei Ye.
'It has been a long one. Le Mans has always been close. First three years I raced LMP2 but the amount of laps I have done in the top three positions in five Le Mans is like 70%. But I have finally won it and in a Hypercar,' the Polish driver said.
'We deserve it. Happy for Ferrari. Three years in a row with three different crews, it is amazing.' There was just one safety car during the entire race. Ferrari crew #51 were third, as Porsche prevented a podium sweep for the Italian team with second place.
Kubica was active in F1 between 2006 and 2010, but suffered a life-threatening rallying accident in 2011.
He was trapped in the car for more than an hour before rescue workers were able to remove him. The accident left him with a partially severed right arm and multiple fractures.
But he made one of the most remarkable comebacks in motorsport history once he got a full-time racing seat with Williams in 2019, before ending his F1 stint as a reserve driver for Alfa Romeo 2020-2022.
Since 2021, he has been competing in the World Endurance Championship.

Verstappen would welcome Vettel as Red Bull F1 advisor
DPA Berlin Max Verstappen said he would welcome his fellow four-time Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel as the Red Bull team advisor. 'It's more than normal that someone that has achieved so much with Red Bull, has been brought up by Red in a sense there's always a spot available, right?' Verstappen said on Thursday ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix this weekend. 'I think Seb always kept a really good relationship with Helmut anyway, even when he left. I didn't know that of course they were talking, but I'm sure that there's always a space for Seb in any kind of form,' he added. Earlier this week, Vettel revealed that he was in early talks with his former team and current Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko about the idea of succeeding the 82-year-old Austrian when his contract with the team ends in 2026. 'We're in contact about this, though maybe not so intensively or in-depth yet, but it's possible,' Vettel told Austrian broadcaster ORF. 'What form that might take will have to be seen. He's already said a few times that he'd stop, but he's still here, and I wish him all the best so that he stays around for a very long time.' Marko has been involved with Red Bull since the team's beginnings in 2005. Vettel won his four F1 titles with Red Bull between 2010 and 2013 before moving to Ferrari in 2015, where he stayed until 2020. The German driver retired in at the end of the 2022 season after two years with Aston Martin. Verstappen annoyed with race ban question Verstappen reacted with annoyance when asked about a potential race ban if he reaches a maximum of 12 penalty points in a 12-month period. 'Is it a joke? I get asked that every weekend,' he said. Ahead of Red Bull's home Austrian GP, Verstappen is one point away from a race ban. Two of his penalty points will expire on June 30, moving him three points away from a race ban in time for the British Grand Prix on July 6. 'We are preparing ourselves in case something should really happen with Max Verstappen in terms of his penalty points. We currently have two replacement drivers: Arvid Lindblad and Ayumu Iwasa,' Marko told the Kleine Zeitung newspaper.

F1 owners allowed by European Commission to acquire MotoGP series
Berlin: Formula One owners Liberty Media have been allowed by the European Commission to buy the MotoGP world championship, currently owned by Dorna Sports SL. Liberty announced the take over of 86% of Dorna in April 2024 and on Monday the European Commission approved the deal, valued at $4.2 billion. 'The European Commission has unconditionally approved the proposed acquisition of Dorna Sports SL ('Dorna') by Liberty Media Corporation ('Liberty Media') under the EU Merger Regulation. The Commission concluded that the merger would not raise competition concerns in the European Economic Area ('EEA'),' the Commission said in a statement. Even though Liberty Media will own the commercial rights to the two top racing series competition in the allocation of broadcasting rights will not be restricted. Following an investigation, the Commission considered that F1 and MotoGP 'are not close competitors for the licensing of broadcasting rights for sports content.' (dpa)

Klopp congratulates Liverpool on $173mn Wirtz deal: ‘It's going to be great'
DPA Berlin Jurgen Klopp has congratulated his former club Liverpool on the high-profile signing of Germany star Florian Wirtz. 'This is going to be absolutely fantastic, I'm sure of it,' the German said in an interview with RTL/ntv on Saturday. The English champions already had 'a fantastic team' last season under his successor Arne Slot, Klopp said. 'It's very hard to strengthen a team when you're champions. But Liverpool have managed it. They've signed an exceptional talent in Florian Wirtz. I'm looking forward to seeing it. It's going to be great.' Liverpool have signed the 22-year-old from Bundesliga runners-up Bayer Leverkusen, reportedly paying up to €150 million ($173 million) including bonus payments. The playmaker has signed a long-term contract. Wirtz is Liverpool's second signing of the summer, following close friend and Leverkusen team-mate Jeremie Frimpong to Anfield, and with the Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvilli joining next month. The Reds will begin their Premier League title defence at Anfield on August 15 against Bournemouth.
