UAE: How a 13-year-old was lured into drug use via WhatsApp: What parents should watch for
Sharjah Police have rescued a 13-year-old Emirati boy who developed a drug addiction after receiving unsolicited messages on WhatsApp. The Anti-Narcotics Department at Sharjah Police responded immediately when the child's father reached out for help.
Brigadier Majid Al Asam, Director of the department, shared the details of the case in an exclusive statement to Gulf News.
How the Incident Unfolded
'We received a call from the child's parent asking for support, and we acted immediately,' Brigadier Al Asam told

. The boy had started receiving random WhatsApp messages offering various types of drugs. Without understanding the danger, he transferred money and collected drugs from a location shared by the dealer.
These messages are often broadcast to many users across the UAE, targeting vulnerable individuals — even children.
Sharjah Police acted promptly and intervened to stop the addiction early, arranging medical and psychological care. Within two weeks, the boy showed clear signs of recovery.
'We have continued to follow up on his recovery, and thank God, he is now in good health,' Al Asam said.
Widespread Use of Social Media for Drug Promotion
The case highlights a growing challenge: drug trafficking via the internet, particularly through social networking platforms.

In 2024 alone, the Sharjah Police Anti-Narcotics Department recorded 912 cases of drug peddling via WhatsApp, resulting in the arrest of 680 suspects. Authorities also blocked 680 websites and social media accounts that promoted narcotics, counterfeit goods, and banned substances.
Brigadier Al Asam described how traffickers use messages or voice notes sent randomly to advertise drugs such as:
Restricted painkillers
Crystal meth
Hashish
Heroin
Other synthetic and illicit substances
'Many users buy drugs via the internet and send money online to dealers.
Some deposit money in bank accounts and are then informed about the drug location via WhatsApp,' he explained.

Sharjah Police have deployed online cyber patrols operating 24/7 to monitor suspicious digital activity. These patrols have already identified 800 different criminal methods used by traffickers and cybercriminals in the UAE.
The department urged parents to stay vigilant about their children's online activity and behavioural changes.
'If you notice any changes in your child's behaviour or signs of drug use, don't wait. Report it right away. Acting quickly can save your child's life,' Brigadier Al Asam advised. He stressed that early intervention is key and encouraged families not to delay contacting authorities if they suspect any involvement in drug-related activity.

State names special courts in Panaji, Margao to deal with land grab cases
Panaji: State govt on Tuesday designated two courts, one in each district, as special courts to ensure proper prosecution and speedy trials in land grab cases. The special investigation team (SIT) probing these cases registered over 44 FIRs and arrested 56 persons. The notification issued by Amir Parab, undersecretary, law, said that govt designed the courts of district judge-1 and additional sessions judge, Panaji and Margao, as special courts to deal with land grabbing cases, both existing and future registrations, until new legislation is enacted. He said the notification was issued on the recommendation by justice V K Jadhav, who heads the commission of inquiry, and with the concurrence of the high court. TOI has earlier reported that the high court granted approval to state govt's proposal to designate two special courts to ensure proper prosecution and speedy trials in land grab cases. The chief justice had directed the designation of these two courts to deal with land grab cases. Eight killed in TN firecracker making unit blast
VIRUDHUNAGAR: Eight workers were killed and five others injured in an explosion at a fireworks unit at Chinnakamanpatti village in Virudhunagar district on Tuesday. The incident happened at Gokulesh Fireworks near Sattur, a unit licensed by Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation. Around 8.20am, workers were handling chemicals required for the manufacture of aerial crackers in the chemical mixing room when the blast occurred, triggered by friction, police said. Eight workers, Mahalingam, 55, Ramamoorthy, 45, Ramajeyam, 27, Lakshmi, 22, Vairamani, 32, Chellapandi, Nagapandi, and Punniamoorthy, died on the spot. Five others sustained injuries and were admitted to Sivakasi govt hospital. Chandrapur: In a significant crackdown on habitual offenders, the Chandrapur district administration has ordered the detention of notorious criminal Sangam Sambhaji Sagore under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities (MPDA) Act for a period of one year. The action was taken following a proposal submitted by Chandrapur police, citing his repeated involvement in criminal activities and the atmosphere of fear he created in the district. Sagore (30), a resident of Mitra Nagar near Ambedkar College, Chandrapur, has been booked in as many as 21 criminal cases across police stations in Ballarpur, Ramnagar, Padoli, and Bhadravati. His record includes armed robberies, grievous assaults, unlawful possession and use of firearms, arson, obscene verbal abuse, murder, and attempted murder. Despite multiple preventive measures taken against him in the past, Sagore continued to engage in violent and disruptive acts, posing a threat to public safety and law and order.
