Mumbai tense after police crack down on MNS protest amid language row
The march was organised by MNS and other pro-Marathi groups under the aegis of Marathi Ekikaran Samiti.
Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis maintained that permission had been granted for the rally, in which MNS leaders planned to participate, but the party insisted on a specific route which posed law and order challenges.
'There is no opposition to holding a rally. It was difficult to give permission for the route they sought. Police requested them to change the route, but the organisers were adamant,' the senior BJP leader said.
MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande slammed the government over police action.

'CM Fadnavis says he is ready to grant permission, but only if we change our rally route. This is a tactic to suppress our voice,' Deshpande said.
Minister of state for home Yogesh Kadam said there was no discrimination between Marathi and non-Marathi communities when it comes to granting permission for rallies, but law and order cannot be compromised. 'The state government is committed to ensure law and order during such protests,' he said.
'The action was taken to maintain law and order,' said a police official.

Are Rohingya illegal migrants or refugees? Supreme Court to decide
The Supreme Court on Thursday began examining whether Rohingya entrants staying in the country are refugees or illegal migrants, as it heard a batch of petitions filed on their behalf challenging their deportation and seeking remedial steps to give them basic amenities during their stay in refugee camps. Advocate Kanu Agarwal appearing for Centre submitted a list of cases pertaining to Rohingyas and urged the court to decide this batch of cases first.(File/ANI) A bench headed by justice Surya Kant said, 'The first major issue is whether they are refugees or illegal migrants. The rest is consequential.' 'If they are refugees, they are entitled to certain protections under law. If not, they are illegal migrants and should be deported back to their country,' said the bench, also comprising justices Dipankar Datta and N Kotiswar Singh. The court took up a batch of 22 cases involving the deportation of foreigners who are either in detention camps or are claiming refugee status. The bench directed that the cases related to Rohingya migrants be segregated into a single batch. It directed that cases concerning other foreigners be clubbed into a separate batch to be taken up separately. The four questions the court framed in the Rohingya batch of cases included, 'whether Rohingya entrants are entitled to be declared as refugees and if so, what protection emanates from the rights they are entitled to; whether Rohingyas are illegal entrants and if government of India and states are obligated to deport them in accordance with law.' There were two consequential issues also that were framed by the court: 'Even if Rohingya entrants are held to be illegal entrants, can they be detained indefinitely or they are entitled to be released on bail subject to conditions.' Lastly, it said, 'Whether Rohingya entrants who are not detained but living in refugee camps have been provided with basic amenities like drinking water, sanitation, education, etc.' As the batch of cases got listed together, the bench expressed a practical difficulty in proceeding with the hearing of the matter as some petitions talked of deportation of foreigners in general, while others specifically related to the condition of foreigners in detention camps. Advocate Kanu Agarwal appearing for Centre submitted a list of cases pertaining to Rohingyas and urged the court to decide this batch of cases first. The non-Rohingya matters, he added, seek interpretation of the Foreigners Act. The bench said, 'The issues that arise in the other batch of cases will be determined separately on another date.' Advocate Prashant Bhushan appearing in multiple petitions said that the genesis of these cases began with cases filed by Rohingyas in 2013. He said 15 out of the batch of 22 cases pertained to Rohingya refugees and the need for providing them facilities in their camps at par with refugees recognised under the UN Convention on Refugees. India is not a signatory to this convention and has not considered grant of refugee status for them. Senior advocates Ashwani Kumar and Colin Gonsalves, appearing in other matters, pointed out that Rohingyas who hail from Myanmar have fled to India seeking asylum as they are being persecuted in their country. Gonsalves further referred to a case filed by the wife of a foreigner facing detention in Assam which concern Rohingya and non-Rohingya foreigners. In that case, Gonsalves showed orders passed by the court to expedite the deportation process despite the fact that Myanmar is unwilling to take these persons back. In May this year, while hearing an application filed by Delhi-based Rohingya migrants, the top court had refused to adopt a piecemeal approach in deciding individual cases and called for all cases pending on the issue to be listed together. The Centre has been opposing the maintainability of these petitions citing an order of the top court of April 2021 passed in a petition seeking protection for Rohingya refugees. This order permits the Centre to take deportation measures as required under law. This order held that while the right to life and liberty is available to even non-citizens, the right not to be deported is ancillary but concomitant to the right to reside or settle in any part of India, which is guaranteed under Article 19(1)(e) only to citizens.

Chennai: Days after PM Narendra Modi declined to meet him and hours after he met Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin during a morning walk in Adyar, former AIADMK leader O. Panneerselvam (OPS) Thursday walked out of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Not long after Modi declined to meet him, OPS publicly began to criticise the BJP-led central government for 'withholding funds' under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan Scheme—marking a shift from his earlier pro-BJP stance. On whether he would consider teaming up with actor-turned politician Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), former chief minister OPS said, 'Time will tell, and there is still time for elections.' Later in the evening, OPS met Stalin at his residence. Speaking to reporters, he said it was a formal meeting to inquire about his health and 'no politics was discussed'. Asked if he would join the DMK-led alliance, he said, 'Anything can happen in politics. There is enough time for elections. There is no permanent friend and permanent enemy in politics.' OPS was always seen as Modi's man in the AIADMK. He himself publicly told supporters in July 2017 that he decided to combine forces with AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) at the behest of the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Former coordinator of the AIADMK, OPS was expelled from the party in July 2022 and has since been heading the AIADMK Cadres Rights Retrieval Committee—while legally contesting EPS's control of the party. Chennai-based political analysts ThePrint spoke to said OPS has three options, but it has yet to be seen if he can expand his support base. Political analyst N. Sathiya Moorthy underlined that the main issue between OPS and EPS was that the former wanted to lead AIADMK and serve as chief minister. 'Now, if he joins any party, he cannot be the chief ministerial face. Secondly, all these years, OPS is known to have been ideologically aligned with BJP. He cannot wash it off easily to join any of the parties in Tamil Nadu that are anti-BJP including Vijay's TVK.' However, referring to the former AIADMK leader's meeting with Stalin, political commentator Raveenthran Duraisamy said OPS might join DMK and become its 'Maravar face'. The Maravar is a backward community primarily based in southern Tamil Nadu. 'He (OPS) was shown the doors by BJP, hence he cannot go back there. Though TVK and Seeman's NTK are there for him, he might choose DMK over others for a better political space,' Duraisamy told ThePrint. Sathiya Moorthy added that OPS might lose his support base if he joins the DMK, since its opposition to DMK has been a core tenet of the AIADMK. Duraisamy, however, held a somewhat different view. The dynamics in Dravidian politics, he said, changed since the demise of former chief ministers M. Karunanidhi and J. Jayalalithaa. 'There is no hate against Stalin, unlike his father Karunanidhi. The previous elections data shows AIADMK's votes have moved to DMK. It is also proven that a lot of former AIADMK ministers, including Senthil Balaji, Sekar Babu and K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, are now faring well in DMK as well. Hence, OPS has a good future in the DMK, but he may not reveal it now,' said Duraisamy. He had already served as chief minister between 2001 and 2002, and 2014 and 2015 when Jayalalithaa faced disqualification on account of a disproportionate assets case. By 7 February, 2017, OPS opened a front against Jayalalithaa's close aide V.K. Sasikala, who was then elected general secretary of the party and chosen to replace him as chief minister. He sat at Jayalalithaa's memorial and launched a Dharmayudham (war of principles) against Sasikala, who sacked him from the party position. He asserted at the time that he was appointed to the party post by Jayalalithaa and nobody could remove him. Sasikala was convicted in a separate disproportionate assets case, she declared EPS as the next chief minister before going to prison. In August 2017, OPS's faction merged with EPS's faction, after the latter turned against Sasikala and her nephew T.T.V. Dhinakaran. On 21 August that year, OPS was sworn in as deputy to CM EPS. In the party structure, OPS held the position of coordinator, while EPS was joint-coordinator, establishing a dual-leadership in the party. However, merger of the factions could not prevent infighting and the dual leadership model collapsed in 2022 in the aftermath of AIADMK's loss to the DMK-led alliance in Assembly polls the previous year. In the AIADMK general council meeting held in July 2022, EPS was unanimously elected interim general secretary and OPS, then coordinator and treasurer of the party, was sacked from primary membership, accused of collaborating with DMK, and attempting to disrupt party activities. OPS has since waged a lonely legal battle to reclaim AIADMK leadership, alleging that the election of general secretary was unfair. The Madras High Court and later the Supreme Court rejected his pleas to stay EPS's election as general secretary. Meanwhile, he also filed a petition with the Election Commission in this regard, in which inquiry is still pending. Despite being expelled from AIADMK, OPS contested the 2024 Lok Sabha polls from Ramanathapuram seat as an Independent with BJP support under the 'Jackfruit' symbol. He lost to IUML's K. Navas Kani. In February 2025, OPS's camp expressed willingness to return to AIADMK, which EPS dismissed. After AIADMK and BJP formally revived their alliance for the 2026 Assembly elections, top BJP leaders including Modi and Shah kept an arm's distance from OPS during their visits to the state. 1 2 Nagpur: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists on Thursday blackened the face of assistant engineer with Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT), Suresh Chavan, at the trust's East Division office over his alleged involvement in corruption. While the NIT claimed that the ink attack was due to personal enmity, MNS office-bearers maintained it was the result of negligence by NIT's senior officials, despite multiple complaints against the official in question. MNS's city unit secretary, Ghanshyam Nikhade, said the party's office-bearers had given multiple complaints against Chavan to senior NIT officials, but they did not take any action and instead protected him. "Even on July 18, we had submitted a written complaint regarding corruption by Chavan, but the officials neither took any action nor transferred him. Had action been taken by the seniors, the incident could have been avoided," said Nikhade. He also added that NIT officials are contacting party office-bearers from rural Nagpur who do not have any knowledge about the issue. We have also given a complaint in writing to the police," said the official. MNS claimed that on Sept 13, 2023, under the leadership of Sandeep Deshpande and Raju Umralkar, the party had taken out a protest march to the NIT office and submitted a memorandum to the then chairman, Manojkumar Suryawanshi. "At the time, Chavan had been serving continuously for 10 years at the NIT's East Division office without transfer. This prolonged tenure enabled him to carry out several large-scale irregularities. For example, he reportedly collected lakhs of rupees from encroachers of NIT-owned land in Mouza-Chikhali (Dev) by promising them unauthorized land allotments," said MNS. The MNS also accused Chavan of embezzling govt funds under the guise of development works in Bhandkheda (Central Nagpur) by submitting fake bills for cement road projects that were either not carried out or were actually done by the NMC. "All these instances of corruption, along with supporting evidence, were submitted to various authorities, including the then chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, Union minister Nitin Gadkari, and other concerned govt agencies. The chief minister's office acknowledged the memorandum and directed immediate investigation. However, NIT officials dismissed these directives and took no action. On the contrary, with support from certain political figures and senior NIT officials, Chavan allegedly got himself re-appointed to the East Division to resume his corrupt activities after being briefly transferred to West Division office," the MNS alleged in a press note.
