Why the ‘Tiny Chef' cancellation broke the internet's heart

A now-viral clip of the stop-motion animated star of The Tiny Chef Show getting laid off directly by the execs at 'Mickelflodeon' has tugged at the heartstrings of the internet.
In a YouTube short posted earlier this week, now with 365,000 views, the tiny green chef (Cheffy, as he's known to friends) is minding his business, dusting his room, when he gets a call delivering the terrible news: His show's been canceled. 'But we won an Emmy,' he lisps into the phone. 'What about Rob? And Jen? Kate, Patty, MK, Leah—all my friends.'
Wiping away tears, he says: 'I understand. I love you too, bye.' He tries to go back to cleaning before breaking down on the bed. Gut-wrenching.
'That little attempt to straighten himself out and then get back to what he was doing only to immediately break down… that's REAL grief right there,' reads one of the YouTube comments. 'I have no idea who this is but after watching this he means the world to me and something needs to be done about this great injustice,' another commenter wrote.
According to the creators of the stop-motion series, which began on Instagram before being picked up by Nickelodeon in 2022 for three successful seasons, the cancellation was 'very unexpected.'
Tiny Chef's creators Rachel Larsen and Ozlem 'Ozi' Akturk told The Wrap, 'We always try to play Chef's life really authentically and this was a big moment—this was his dream show.' They added, 'I think to not show how that would affect him isn't right.'
To rub salt in the wound: 'Bro look at how happy Tiny Chef was back when the show initially got picked up…..' one X user posted. In each episode, the tiny herbivore chef created equally tiny dishes, from apple pie to guacamole. Each episode featured a celebrity announcer, with cameos from RuPaul, Alan Cumming, Kristen Bell, and Rebel Wilson.
Now Cheffy needs your help. 'Many of you have said that you would die for Tiny Chef, we don't need all that (!!!) but we do need crowdfunding to keep going,' reads a call for donations on the show's website. As soon as the internet found out about Cheffy's plight, they sprang into action.
'Oh. Nickelodeon BROKE this man….' one X user posted, now with over 111.8 million views. 'How did they make me care about this character despite never seeing a single episode,' asked another. (Indeed, it seems many of Tiny Chef's most fervent supporters only learned of his existence this week.)
'Normalize having characters reacting to their shows/films getting cancelled to make people hate CEOs even more,' one X user wrote. Another added, 'This is why animation is so important too. AI slop won't make you feel emotions like this.'

Now it seems the iconic network is finally listening to the complaints of their earliest audiences — but not everybody is convinced. In a press release this week, it was announced that MTV will air a week of 24/7 music videos across MTV2, MTV Live and MTV Classic leading up to the 2025 Music Video Awards on Sunday, Sept. 7. According to the release, the selections will include "both classic and current" videos "in a revival of the brand's early DNA reimagined for today's audiences," curated by "past VMA winners and legendary MTV personalities." In the comments on an Instagram post sharing the news, some fans seemed thrilled to hear about the planned programming switch, while others remained skeptical. Whether or not MTV's throwback experiment will be a hit with viewers remains to be seen, but hopes are high for this year's VMAs, which will see the return of producer and CEO of digital media company Gunpowder & Sky (linked to such iconic VMAs moments as Beyoncé's pregnancy reveal and the Madonna-Britney Spears-Christina Aguilera kiss). "We're not just producing a show. We're launching a celebration of music that spans one week, every screen and every generation," Gunpowder & Sky CEO Van Toffler said in the press release. ‘M3GAN 2.0' reviews say the sequel is both too much and not enough
She's baaaaaack. Everyone's favorite viral dance craze-creating android goes from villain to (anti)hero in M3GAN 2.0, the follow-up to 2023's breakout horror hit. Once again produced by genre titans Jason Blum and James Wan, the sequel introduces a T-1000 to M3GAN's T-800 — a military-manufactured A.I. powered weapon named AMELIA. Other returning players include Alison Williams as M3GAN's maker, Gemma, and Violet McGraw as her niece, Cady. Director Gerard Johnstone is also back behind the camera for another round. And the reviews for her upgrade suggest that going bigger didn't necessarily result in a movie that's necessarily better. M3GAN 2.0 currently has a 63 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes and registers at a middling 55 percent on Metacritic. Size definitely doesn't matter to Associated Press critic, Mark Kennedy. "Most of the same team that gave us the refreshing horror-comedy original two years ago have not only gone super-big, but also changed the franchise's genre," he writes, noting that the sequel goes the full-on action spectacle route. "[It] sometimes feels like the moviemakers just threw money at the sequel and tried to ape other franchises by going massive." Like many critics, David Rooney makes the Terminator 2 comparison explicit in his Hollywood Reporter writeup. "The humor is forced to compete with seriously overcomplicated plotting in a sequel that entangles its horror comedy roots with uninspired espionage elements, becoming a convoluted mishmash with shades of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Mission: Impossible and the Austin Powers franchise," he notes. Rooney's also not a big fan of AMELIA's moves. "Too often, the star attraction takes a back seat to the much less entertaining Amelia, an icy blonde killing machine like so many icy blonde killing machines before her, with none of M3GAN's sardonic wit." Representing the middle ground, Paste's Jesse Hassenger expresses more appreciation for the franchise's genre pivot. "It's a savvy move to introduce Amelia, a killer robot weaponizing the original Megan specs to serve as a potential tool of the military-industrial complex," he writes, praising the "ridiculous fun of seeing Megan suit up for a bunch of unlikely spy missions." But the too-muchness inevitably gets to him as well. "Even with a fair number of sci-fi ideas riffing lightly on mech-suits, neural implants, anti-tech crusading, and the capacity for artificial beings to grow and change, there is no reason for this particular lightweight movie to run two full hours." Still, there are those reviewers who don't regret taking the ride — including The Wrap's Michael Ordoña. "The new movie thankfully avoids pretty much every possible pitfall of a sequel, especially the usual fate of horror follow-ups being merely bigger and bloodier rehashes," he observes. "Of course, bigger isn't always better; but here, bigger is accompanied by different."
