The Star12-06-2025
PETALING JAYA: Super League teams Kuala Lumpur, Kelantan and Police have officially been granted full National Licences by the Malaysian Football League's (MFL) independent First Instance Body (FIB) after fulfilling all financial compliance requirements.
Initially, the clubs had only received conditional approval, pending the submission of additional financial documents by May 31 per Article 8(l) of the MFL Club Licensing Regulations.
On Thursday (June 12), the FIB confirmed that all three clubs had submitted the required documents ahead of the deadline.
Following a thorough review and assessment of the additional materials, the FIB concluded that each club had successfully met the necessary licensing criteria.
FIB chairman Sheikh Mohd Nasir Sheikh Mohd Sharif extended his appreciation for the cooperation and commitment shown by the three clubs throughout the process and wished them well in the upcoming season.
Earlier, the FIB had also awarded full National Licences to Johor Darul Ta'zim, Selangor, Penang, Kuching City, Sabah, Terengganu, Pahang, Negri Sembilan and guest team Brunei.
Additionally, Melaka and Immigration from the A1 Semi-Pro division were granted Extraordinary National Licences, allowing them to compete in the domestic top flight.

‘Gaddar' eyes capital gains in terms of progress in new chapter with KL

PETALING JAYA: Fazrul Amir Md Zaman's last stint outside Kelantan came in 2019 with the now-defunct PKNS, when he was a promising youngster trying to make his mark in the Youth and President's Cup. That opportunity did not pan out, but the experience helped shape his journey. Now, seven years later, the man fondly known as 'Gaddar' is ready to take another leap - this time with Kuala Lumpur in the Super League kicking off on Aug 8. After gradually building his reputation back home - especially during a standout 2023 season with Kelantan - Fazrul earned a move to the capital. While some initially viewed him as a potential back-up option, his lively displays in pre-season friendlies suggest he may have a bigger role on the left wing. But the 25-year-old isn't getting ahead of himself as he is well aware of the fierce competition in his position, with Argentine playmaker Manuel Hidalgo, S. Sharvin, and J. Partiban all vying for spots on the flanks. 'This is my second time playing outside the east coast, but I've been able to adapt quickly. The staff and my teammates have helped make the transition smooth,' said Fazrul. 'Competition on the wings is intense, but I consider it a positive challenge. It motivates me to raise my level. 'After four friendly matches, I feel more in tune with the team, and my form is picking up - but there's still plenty I need to improve on.' Kuala Lumpur have played four pre-season friendlies so far, drawing with Bunga Raya (0-0) and Sabah (1-1), beating Armed Forces (3-1), and losing narrowly to Indonesian side Semen Padang (0-1). They will travel to Melaka for another friendly tomorrow, with more matches scheduled before their Super League opener against Immigration at the Batu Kawan Stadium on Aug 12. Last season, Fazrul made 24 appearances in all competitions and scored two goals. 'My personal target this season is to play consistently, contribute more with goals and assists, and keep progressing. 'For the team, the aim is clear - we want to climb up the table and take KL further than before this season.' The City Boys finished sixth with 31 points last season.

After 25 years and countless moves, Malaysia finally gets its first chess Grandmaster

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3 — For the first time in the nation's history, Malaysia can proudly call one of its own a Grandmaster (GM), the highest title awarded in the world of chess. Yeoh Li Tian, a 25-year-old prodigy from Petaling Jaya, officially earned the coveted GM title after securing his third norm and surpassing the 2500 FIDE rating mark by winning the GM-IM Invitational Chess Championship 2025 held here today. The title, awarded by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), is a lifelong honour and places Li Tian among an elite group of fewer than 2,000 Grandmasters worldwide. Speaking to Bernama, Li Tian, who began playing chess at the age of three, admitted that his journey was long and grueling, marked by sacrifices and perseverance. 'I always tell people that I have no childhood. So I guess that that will be my biggest sacrifice. Since young, like even in primary school, I go to school, come back, do my homework and then I start working on chess,' he said. When asked about achieving the GM title on home soil, he said the moment was even more meaningful after narrowly missing the opportunity during the 2022 SEA Games in Hanoi. 'I felt really relieved and happy to actually get my last norm back in Malaysia. I hope that it inspires more chess players to play chess,' he added. Looking ahead, Li Tian remains uncertain about his next steps but hinted that he might compete in the upcoming SEA Games in Thailand at the end of this year. 'Malaysia Chess Federation (MCF) already approached me for this SEA Games. I think there's a high chance that I will be playing,' he said. Meanwhile, MCF President Akhramsyah Muammar Ubaidah Sanusi described Li Tian's achievement as a historic milestone in the nation's chess history. He added that the MCF is now more determined than ever to nurture and produce more Malaysian GM, with the goal of elevating and strengthening the local chess scene. 'I feel the achievement is a new positive and healthy development for the game of chess in the country. 'We do not want this achievement to stop here and if can, we want more GM from Malaysia to emerge, just like ehat has been produced by neighbouring countries like Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines,' he said. — Bernama

Kinoshi admits Red Giants not in great shape

KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor head coach Katsuhito Kinoshi has raised concerns over his team's lack of sharpness ahead of their Charity Shield match against Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on Aug 8. The Japanese said not all of his players are showing the intensity required. He added that some are still struggling to meet the standards required as the new M-League season looms. Kinoshi also expressed his unease about the fixtures, which see Selangor play in the Sultan of Selangor's Cup at Merdeka Stadium on Sept 27, on the day they are scheduled to meet Melaka in a Super League match at MBPJ Stadium. The tie is now marked "to be confirmed (TBC)". "I don't know the situation at the end of September. Even if I have any complaints, I can't change it. I just have to accept the competition as well. It's okay." Kinoshi, 61, said his players must take full ownership of their preparation for the new season.
