Saf to the future: Boeing says new jet fuel could add $1.3b to Kiwi economy, DHL says sustainable fuel critical to future trade

But even then, challenges remained. DHL had training programmes to ensure planes were flown efficiently and that fuel use was optimised.
He said Saf comprised 3.5% of total jet fuel used by DHL Express last year, and the company bought 7.3% of all Saf produced worldwide.
'When you look at the industry, we're a major user of sustainable fuel around the world.
'We're well on our way to achieve our mid-term objective, which is to have 30% usage of sustainable fuels by 2030.'
Cobb, visiting Auckland from the company's global headquarters in Bonn, Germany, said most Saf producers with which DHL worked were in Europe, the UK and the US.
But would the logistics giant work with a New Zealand sustainable fuel producer?
'We recently announced a deal in Japan as well as one in Singapore.
'So we're eager for New Zealand and Australia to come online,' Cobb said.
Mark Foy, DHL New Zealand and Pacific managing director, said: 'The first challenge here is to get production up and running in New Zealand and or Australia for us to then be able to acquire from that producer.'
Two years ago, the company launched Go Green Plus, which allowed its customers to buy Saf and offset their Scope 3 emissions.
Scope 3 relates to emissions from a company's value chain.

Foy said about 3000 customers had already decided to use Go Green Plus, indicating demand for Saf not just in aviation, but among a wide variety of DHL customers.
Go Green Plus was launched after collaborations with BP and Finnish oil refiner Neste to supply sustainable fuel derived from waste oil to DHL Express hubs.
Cobb said DHL aimed to lock in multi-year deals for buying Saf. Last year, it bought more than €100 million ($196m) of sustainable aviation fuel.
Countries within the International Civil Aviation Organisation had committed to a net-zero aviation target by 2050.
The International Air Transport Association (Iata) had also committed to that goal.
But Iata has voiced disappointment at the slow growth in Saf, which it said accounted for 0.3% of global jet fuel production last year.
'There is an upfront capital investment that is required, whether they're building a greenfield manufacturing plant or doing a conversion of an existing jet fuel plant,' Foy said.
'That capital intensity upfront is a limitation. Where governments can support that is [by] allocating money for those infrastructure investment projects.'
He said big fuel manufacturers followed incentives for converting to Saf.
Boeing vision
Boeing said New Zealand-made sustainable aviation fuel could spawn a lucrative local industry and create thousands of jobs in the next 25 years.
The aircraft manufacturer said a study by California-based Cyan Ventures found New Zealand could use agricultural and forestry waste, animal fats, vegetable oils and municipal solid waste to greatly improve fuel security.
It said the Cyan study, which it supported, found domestic production of Saf could meet 30% of New Zealand's jet fuel needs by 2050, generate 5700 jobs and improve fuel security.
'Given aviation's a global industry, it's a global challenge and we've got different jurisdictions moving at different paces when it comes to developing Saf policy and renewable fuels policy more broadly,' Dr Kimberly Camrass, Boeing's Asia-Pacific acting regional sustainability lead, told the Herald.
She said New Zealand needed robust policy on Saf, and a successful industry needed strong supply chains to connect feedstocks, suppliers and infrastructure.
'From a Boeing perspective, we see aviation decarbonisation as a team sport.
'The whole of the aviation sector needs to come together to address the issues across those supply chains to make this feasible.
'We'd see Boeing having a role in working with universities, working with airlines, and as appropriate working with governments to make sure the data exists to make evidence-based policy.'
Waste feedstocks could be used not only for Saf but for renewable diesel and other fuels.
Diverting waste from landfills and turning it into a resource would have economic benefits, she said.
'New Zealand is well-placed, particularly when we look at forestry, residual waste, even municipal solid waste.'
She said farmers and the broader agricultural sector could in future export feedstocks - raw materials used in industrial production.
The Boeing-Cyan study found New Zealand could potentially safeguard $4.1 billion in tourism revenue and almost $200 million in trade revenue to 2050, which could otherwise be at risk from climate-conscious consumers and businesses.
Camrass said New Zealand's reliance on imported jet fuel also highlighted the need for a domestic Saf supply.
In December 2023, airlines were told to ration jet fuel at Wellington in the fourth case of a bad batch of aviation fuel in New Zealand within a year.
The Cyan study said national jet fuel use was expected to grow by more than 90% by 2050 to meet travel and trade needs.
'Not having Saf in New Zealand is a risk given the reputation and positioning of the country as an eco-friendly destination, especially given that other countries are decarbonising aviation faster,' it said.
'Saf will increasingly become the 'new normal' for airline passengers.'
Camrass added: 'Overall, there's a clear case to act now, and a clear set of potential steps.'
Among the steps cited in the study was creating strong demand and investment signals for Saf at least two years in advance.
It said a definition of acceptable feedstocks and certification standards was needed, and innovators needed incentives or support to help propel 'first-of-a-kind projects'.
'The opportunity to secure New Zealand's long-term aviation fuel supply, boost economic growth and help meet ambitious climate goals through Saf is compelling.'
Electric and hydrogen planes
Cobb said DHL was keenly watching innovation in electric and other propulsion technologies.
It already had a partnership with Eviation on the 'Alice' e-cargo plane, which was intended for feeder routes and could be charged during loading and unloading operations.
Some other potential e-plane projects were being considered, but Cobb said that technology would likely be for smaller aircraft or short routes.
'You think about the weight of a battery required in order to propel a small turboprop aircraft for 150km even, it's a pretty significant weight ... so that limits the payload that's available to carry for our cargo.'
For bigger aircraft and longer routes, hydrogen-powered planes could be more realistic in the long term.
Boeing's Aurora Flight Sciences is developing a small uncrewed aircraft powered by hydrogen fuel cells.
And Airbus has the ZEROe project, developing aircraft with electric propeller propulsion systems powered by hydrogen fuel cells, which transform hydrogen into electricity through chemical reaction.
'We're certainly following that development closely as well.'

Comment: When I board my flight from Wellington to Sydney, I'm not just thinking about the meetings ahead. As CEO of a transport energy company, I'm acutely aware that the fuel powering that aircraft represents one of our greatest decarbonisation challenges. New Zealand is a geographically remote island, which means air travel is vital to our connection with the rest of the world. Tourism also makes up an essential part of our economy. The overwhelming majority of visitors get on a plane to visit and air transport enables the export of some of our most valuable products to customers across the globe every day. While critical, its contribution to carbon emissions is a challenge that needs to be addressed. Aviation accounts for around 2-3 percent of global carbon emissions, but unlike road transport where we're seeing the adoption of electric vehicles, the technology pathway for low-carbon aviation is far more challenging. There is no battery technology currently on the horizon to power long-haul international flights. For the foreseeable future, if we want to keep flying, we need liquid fuels. Beyond changes such as reducing flights or deploying more efficient aircraft, airlines are looking to alternative jet fuel options, such as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), as the most viable solution currently available for a lower-carbon emission future in air travel. SAF is an industry term used for a form of alternative jet fuel made using feedstocks such as forestry residues, municipal waste, or used cooking oils with the goal of reducing the lifecycle carbon footprint of jet fuel. SAF is most typically used by international airlines when blended with conventional jet fuel to form part of the overall fuel mix and is considered as a 'drop‑in' fuel, meaning it can be used in an existing aircraft fleet. SAF was first used in New Zealand in September 2022, when Z, in partnership with Air New Zealand and Neste, imported 1.2 million litres – enough fuel to power approximately 400 return flights between Wellington and Auckland. This remains the largest SAF shipment New Zealand has made to date. The aviation sector globally is showing growing interest in SAF. Some airlines have set carbon emission reduction targets, passengers are increasingly conscious of their carbon footprints, and international regulations are generally evolving towards tighter environmental standards. Yet today, SAF represents less than 1 percent of total aviation fuel use worldwide, primarily due to limited supply and high costs. One of the biggest challenges for SAF production is getting enough of the right feedstock (raw material from which fuels are produced). There are several different feedstocks that are commonly used, such as tallow and vegetable oils. Other feedstocks such as woody biomass or hydrogen can technically be used, however these can be harder or more costly to manufacture. The additional layer of complexity with any feedstock is that many have alternative uses in the energy transition, so the best use case for each feedstock needs to be taken into consideration as countries and industries navigate the energy transition. For me it isn't a question of if we need SAF in New Zealand, but how we will be able to successfully establish its supply for the domestic and Trans-Tasman markets when international demand for the product is increasing. At Z, we've spent considerable time over the past few years working with industry partners across Aotearoa to understand what it would take. Our conclusion is clear: we need supportive policy settings to give industry the confidence to invest, combined with strategic partnerships and economies of scale that can deliver SAF reliably and in the most cost-effective way to our airline customers. The global policy race is already underway All of New Zealand's top 10 trading partners now either have SAF-supportive policies in place or have shown support for it. Many countries already have minimum SAF-blending requirements, and over time, market access may depend on meeting these requirements. Without action to establish policy settings that create a level playing field, our region risks losing competitiveness, increased exposure to offshore compliance costs, and being shaped by policies set by others. The call for supportive policy settings extends beyond Z. Air New Zealand's public support for a SAF mandate last year reflects broader industry recognition of what's needed. We're continuing to collaborate with fuel supply chain partners, airports and airlines and their representative groups to help inform the Government on policy settings that aim to keep New Zealand competitive in an increasingly regulated global aviation market. Collaborative advantage Z's view is that New Zealand's approach to SAF should play to our strengths – our strong relationships, particularly our Trans-Tasman connections, may allow us to access SAF supply more effectively than attempting to build domestic production capacity from scratch. That is why Z is looking to our parent company Ampol, to see what opportunities we can leverage with our joint scale. Ampol's Memorandum of Understanding with GrainCorp and Industry Funds Management Investors (IFM) to explore the establishment of an integrated renewable fuels* industry presents one possible opportunity. The initial priority under the memorandum saw Ampol and IFM progress a feasibility assessment of a renewable fuels facility at Ampol's refinery in Brisbane and work with GrainCorp to explore the supply of homegrown feedstocks, including additional crushing capacity to supply canola oil to the potential future plant. The feasibility work for the plant is now complete, and the project has moved into the next phase of pre-FEED (front-end engineering and design). The project is still very much in its infancy, with much progress to be made before it's determined viable, but it's a step in the right direction. It's not the only project on the table, there are others exploring similar opportunities, and every initiative will keep more options on the table to hopefully see the industry create a viable market in the future. The opportunity remains New Zealand needs to evaluate any SAF policy announced in Australia and be ready to consider how it might be mirrored or adapted for the New Zealand market. This isn't just about following Australia's lead; it's about ensuring we don't create unnecessary barriers that fragment what could be a unified Trans-Tasman market. When policies are aligned, this will help investment stay in our region. Aotearoa New Zealand has a genuine opportunity to be part of building a thriving SAF market that could benefit our aviation sector, climate goals and economic competitiveness. *Note: 'Renewable fuels' is an industry term used for liquid hydrocarbons made from non-petroleum-based renewable feedstocks such as purpose-grown biomass, or from waste material such as tallow or used cooking oil. Package delivery scams are relentless, and no longer focus on shopping seasons and Christmas. NZ Post delivered more than 81.9 million courier parcels in the 12 months to 1 April 2024. Many Kiwis get too many packages to keep track of, and that's exactly what scammers are counting on. Delivery scams are evolving, and these days they can appear quite subtle. And that's exactly why this example is so interesting: it strikes a balance between appearing legitimate and hiding the usual red flags often found in scam emails. One quick trick to check if an email is fake is to look at the sender's address. Does it really come from DHL or something odd like info@ Looking further into the email body, there's a button that clearly encourages the user to click and proceed. It's designed to appear as though it will take the recipient to DHL's official tracking page. The link actually goes to a site hosted on IPFS — a system that makes it hard to take things down, which is exactly why scammers love it. While this makes it harder to take malicious content offline, it also raises a red flag — this is not where you'd expect a legitimate DHL email to direct you. Since IPFS is compatible with modern browsers, it opens a landing page. The page doesn't display much information at all, but it personalises the scam by pre-filling the login field with the recipient's email address. That's a subtle but clever touch — it adds just enough legitimacy to convince some users to proceed. The site even blocks right-clicking so you can't inspect the code — a common trick scammers use to hide what they're really doing. The language selection links at the bottom are non-functional — clicking them does nothing. But most users won't bother to test those, so they serve a purely visual purpose: to make the site look more legitimate and avoid raising suspicion. At first glance, most of the code is dedicated to CSS styling — which is unusual, as this would typically be loaded from external files. Embedding so much CSS directly into the page is a strange choice and already raises some suspicion. But beyond the formatting, there are several indicators that strongly suggest this is a phishing site. The URL points to IPFS storage ( Real login portals (e.g., for Microsoft, Google, etc.) use official domains (like is a decentralised file storage system — no legitimate organisation will host login pages there. Form captures email and password with no backend: The form fields (email, password) do not submit anywhere obvious. Real login forms send credentials securely (HTTPS POST) to legitimate servers. Phishing forms either harvest the info silently or submit it to hidden malicious endpoints. Mix of languages links with no functionality: There are fake "language links" (Arabic, Czech, Danish, etc.) all pointing to the same broken IPFS page. On real sites, language selectors actually change the content dynamically. Poor HTML/CSS quality and broken elements: The code is poorly formatted, has broken inline styles, and excessive base64-encoded images. Real corporate web pages are carefully coded, fully polished, and use proper asset management (e.g., not massive inline blobs). The distribution of this scam shows New Zealand and Australia are real targets. Due to the generic nature of the landing page and the broad appeal of the phishing message, this scam can be deployed almost identically worldwide. This increases the attackers' chances of success by allowing them to trick users in multiple regions into handing over their credentials — which can then be repurposed for more targeted, high-value attacks. The threat is steadily increasing. The dips visible in the data typically correspond to weekends, suggesting that the most successful day to launch an attack is Monday — when people return to full inboxes and are still easing into the workweek. Aside from this pattern, the threat remains consistent and persistent. Gen Digital cybersecurity experts fully expect this scam, or variations of it, to continue appearing now and in the foreseeable future.
