England bounce back to beat Netherlands, Sweden reach Euro quarters

Gulf Today6 days ago
Lauren James made sure England avoided a major scare at Women's Euro 2025 with a brace in Wednesday's 4-0 thumping of the Netherlands which kick-started the Lionesses' title defence.
Chelsea star James opened the scoring with a rocket of a shot in the 22nd minute and added a third on the hour mark to cap a superb individual performance at the Letzigrund Stadium in Zurich, where England started the game at risk of elimination.
Georgia Stanway and Ella Toone scored the other goals as England swept the Dutch aside in Zurich and moved level on three points with the Oranje and France, who face bottom team Wales later, in Group D.
France will go top as long as they don't suffer a shock defeat to Wales but qualification for the last eight will now go to the final round of fixtures on Sunday.
That will suit England as Sarina Wiegman's team face Wales with the wind in their sails while France and the Netherlands face off in Basel with their tournament lives on the line.

James' hugely impressive performance, this time on the right flank, against the meek Dutch came in just her second appearance in a competitive fixture since suffering a hamstring injury in April.
The 23-year-old had been a doubt for the tournament but now looks to be approaching her best form after a shaky start to the tournament against France at the weekend.
England started fast like they did against the French and should have been ahead within 10 minutes as Alessia Russo and James, who was moved to the right wing to accomodate Toone in midfield, both missed excellent headed opportunities.
However James made up for her miss with a wonderful individual goal, collecting Russo's pass before shimmying inside and unleashing an unstoppable left-footed shot past Daphne van Domselaar.
The only criticism that could have been levelled at England is that they should have been further ahead early on after creating a clutch of opportunities against the strangely below-par opposition.
But Stanway made the scoreline reflect the balance of play in stoppage time at the end of the first half by drilling home from distance after the Dutch defence again failed to deal with a high ball.
Unlucky Russo had a neat headed goal ruled out for Leah Williamson straying offside almost immediately after the break, but James was on hand to seal the points with half an hour left to play, rolling home on the rebound after superb play down the right flank from Lauren Hemp.

Seven minutes later Toone completed the rout by drilling home low with her left foot and giving England the heavy win which boosted their hopes of reaching the next round.
Earlier, Sweden captain Kosovare Asllani scored one goal and made another as her side cruised into the knockout stages of the women's European Championship with a 3-0 win over Poland on Tuesday that eliminated the Poles. The win also guaranteed Germany's berth in the last eight after they beat Denmark earlier on Tuesday, with the Danes joining Poland in exiting the competition after both lost their opening two matches.
Germany and Sweden occupy the top two spots in Group C on six points and meet in Zurich on Saturday to decide who will win the group after Sweden's aerial bombardment from the wings proved too much for the Polish defence.
Asllani and Madelen Janogy both hit the woodwork with early headers before striker Stina Blackstenius nodded home a cross from her captain in the 28th minute to break the deadlock.
The Swedes were well aware of the threat posed by Poland captain Ewa Pajor and kept her well-shackled for much of the game.
On the few occasions she did get the ball, the Polish fans rose to their feet in anticipation, but the Sweden defence was quick to snuff out any danger.

England penalised for slow over-rate in Lord's Test

England have been fined 10 per cent of their match fee and penalised two ICC World Test Championship points for maintaining a slow over-rate against India in the third Test at Lord's. Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after England were ruled to be two overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration. In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time. In addition, as per Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, a side is penalised one point for each over short. Consequently, two World Test Championship points have been deducted from England's points total. England captain Ben Stokes pled guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing. On-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, third umpire Ahsan Raza and fourth umpire Graham Lloyd levelled the charge.

England fined, docked two WTC points for slow over rate at Lord's

England were docked two World Test Championship (WTC) points and fined 10% match fees on Wednesday for their slow over rate in the third test against India at Lord's. The hosts went 2-1 up in the five-test series with a thrilling 22-run victory but were found two overs short of target in a match where the Dukes ball went out of shape several times and had to be replaced. "England captain Ben Stokes pled guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing," the International Cricket Council said in a statement. Players lose 5 per cent of their match fees for every over their team fail to bowl in the allotted time. It also costs the team one WTC point. England slipped from second to third in the WTC standings behind Sri Lanka following the points deduction. Australia, who completed a 3-0 sweep of West Indies earlier this week, lead the standings in the new 2025-2027 cycle.

Pogacar stays in hunt for 4th Tour de France title despite rollercoaster race

UAE Team Emirates-XRG's Tadej Pogacar knows the road to a fourth Tour de France title won't be an easy cruise through the French countryside — and as the peloton took a well-earned pause on Tuesday, the defending champion made it clear that the race is far from decided. While enjoying a rare moment of relaxation during the first rest day — indulging in a burger, a fresh haircut, and a quiet moment at a French cafe — Pogacar's mind remained firmly focused on the challenges looming in the Pyrenees. 'The second week may be short, but it's going to be crucial,' the 26-year-old Slovenian said. After ten intense stages, Pogacar described the first week of the Tour as 'explosive, nervous, stressful, and super-hard.' He admitted that fatigue and soaring temperatures had taken a toll, and he didn't hold back his frustration with the defensive tactics of Jonas Vingegaard's Visma-Lease a Bike team. But Pogacar, currently sitting second overall, just 29 seconds behind surprise leader Ben Healy, believes the shorter five-stage second week could be a turning point. 'Week two will be really fast,' he said — not referring to the pace of the race, but to how quickly the days will fly by. 'We're going to see some big gaps in the upcoming days, and I think it's going to be good for me. It's almost as hard as the final week.' The emergence of new contenders like Ireland's Healy and France's Kevin Vauquelin has added unexpected depth to this year's race. Pogacar welcomed the shift but acknowledged the added unpredictability. 'It's not just the big teams. Everyone has proved they can stay up front,' he said. 'The field is packed — it's going to be a huge fight, even for the podium, and especially for the yellow jersey.' He predicted that the race leader's jersey would soon change hands. 'Not tomorrow on the flat,' he said, 'but at the Hautacam,' referencing the fearsome Pyrenean climb scheduled for later in the week. 'We'll see if Ben (Healy) can hold on. I hope he feels tired. I want the yellow jersey back.' Pogacar also circled Friday's 11km uphill time trial to Peyragudes as a key moment in the race. 'I'm really looking forward to this week, especially the time trial,' he said, his expression brightening. 'It's a short one, but it's going to be hard. And it suits me.' The Tour winner in 2020, 2021, and 2024 — who was humbled in last year's time trial and mountain stages by Vingegaard — seems determined to reassert himself on terrain where he once dominated. Let Them Chase With less than half the race remaining, Pogacar holds a slight advantage over rivals like Remco Evenepoel (third, 1:00 behind) and Vingegaard (fourth, 1:17 behind). But he insists the pressure to attack doesn't lie with him. 'I'm under no pressure to go on the offensive,' he said. 'It's up to them if they want to get ahead of me.' For now, Pogacar is poised — well-rested, re-energized, and ready to reclaim the yellow jersey as the mountains rise to meet him. With 10 stages down and the punishing mountains of France still to come, UAE Team Emirates-XRG enter the second week of the 2025 Tour de France well place and full of momentum – ready to resume the fight for the Maillot Jaune.
