Texas A&M to Big Leagues: Former Aggie southpaw called up to Seattle Mariners

USA Today3 days ago
After months of impressive outings in MiLB, a former Texas A&M pitcher earned a call-up to Major League Baseball on Monday.
Southpaw reliever Brandyn Garcia was bumped up from the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers to the Seattle Mariners. He was selected by the Mariners in the 11th round of the 2023 MLB Draft, following his senior season with the Aggies. In his first season with the High-A Everett AquaSox and Double-A Arkansas Travelers, Garcia recorded a 2.25 ERA with 134 strikeouts in 116.0 innings pitched. His performances on the bump earned him the organization's co-minor league pitcher of the year in 2024.
With Garcia being just one of two left-handed relievers and the Mariners bullpen suffering from burnout, the well-earned call-up to the Major Leagues could prove to be beneficial for both parties.
The 25-year-old's first appearance on the bump for the Mariners will be his MLB debut. According to MLB Pipeline, Garcia ranks as the top left-handed prospect in the organization and the No. 4 pitching prospect in the system, while also being the No. 13 overall prospect.
Through 68 career minor league appearances, he has secured an 11-7 record with seven saves and a 2.49 ERA. Garcia has also struck out 184 hitters and walked just 67, which is good for 10.4 strikeouts per nine innings. Now, he will aim to continue that success at the highest level in baseball with the Mariners organization.
Before he put on the Maroon and White uniform for the Aggies, Garcia led Quinnipiac in strikeouts and wins in back-to-back seasons in 2021 and 2022. Before transferring to Texas A&M, the lefty posted a 7.15 ERA with 12 starts in 61.2 innings pitched during his time with the Bobcats.
Garcia's numbers improved tremendously with the Aggies in 2023, as he secured a 5.56 ERA with 56 strikeouts in 43.2 innings pitched and one save. His 3-3 overall in 27 appearances helped aid Texas A&M to an NCAA Regional appearance, which the program eventually fell flat against the Stanford Cardinal.
The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Granby, Connecticut, native translated that improvement on the mound during his senior season to the MiLB. With much need for arms in the starting rotation and a relief role, the Mariners organization could place Garcia on the mound in either fashion sooner rather than later.

Nebraska placed in the middle of the pack in preseason Big Ten power rankings

Nebraska football is only five weeks from kickoff, and preseason power rankings have begun to take shape. USA TODAY Sports put together their power rankings for the Big Ten Conference on Tuesday, and Nebraska is ranked sixth in Paul Myerberg's latest breakdown. The Huskers aim to build on a 7-6 season in 2024, which saw them win their first bowl game since 2015. Now, second-year quarterback Dylan Raiola looks to take charge with new faces on offense and a full season under coordinator Dana Holgorsen. The defense has also received upgrades, headlined by the hiring of new defensive coordinator John Butler, who replaces Tony White after White departed the program to join Florida State. All of this sets the stage nicely for Matt Rhule to succeed in his third season. Myerberg was kind to the Huskers in his piece and broke down their chances. "The Cornhuskers are climbing the ladder under third-year coach Matt Rhule, whose previous teams at Temple and Baylor popped in his third season. Dylan Raiola will take a leap in his sophomore year and the offense should shine under coordinator Dana Holgorsen, but line play on both sides will decide Nebraska's fate." Line play will indeed be an essential part of the program's fate moving forward. Changes to the lines were a focus of the program throughout the offseason, and they will be one of the many interesting subplots for the program in what is a crucial season for development. Nebraska will open the 2025 college football season on Thursday, August 28, when the Huskers face the Cincinnati Bearcats at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. The kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. CT. Contact/Follow us @CornhuskersWire on X (formerly Twitter), and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Nebraska news, notes, and opinions.

Popular analytics guru projects Wisconsin football win total for 2025 season

The calendar is just days away from reading 'August,' which means it's time for final preparation before the 2025 college football season. One notable milestone in that preparation is Big Ten media days, which are currently taking place in Las Vegas, Nevada. Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell and player representatives quarterback Billy Edwards Jr., cornerback Ricardo Hallman and center Jake Renfro all spoke on Wednesday. Here is further coverage of their comments. Another important stage of the season countdown is updates to various power ratings and projection models. One leader in that regard is Parker Fleming (@statsowar on X), who released his model's projected win totals for every Football Bowl Subdivision team on Monday. Wisconsin's projected win total: 5.2. Meanwhile, Wisconsin's Big Ten schedule includes games against Ohio State (10.1 projected wins), Oregon (10), Indiana (8.6), Michigan (8.4), Illinois (7.6), Washington (7.3), Iowa (7.2) and Minnesota (6.2). Of course, each team's schedule heavily weighs into their projected final record. But in Fleming's model, eight of Wisconsin's nine Big Ten opponents are projected bowl teams, with three potentially representing the conference in the College Football Playoff. Wisconsin's projection of 5.2 wins falls in line with the consensus. ESPN's Football Power Index projects 5.6 wins for the Badgers, while most sportsbooks hold their line at 5 1/2. We at Badgers Wire are a bit more optimistic -- we picked a 6-6 record for Luke Fickell's team with wins over Miami (Ohio), Middle Tennessee, Maryland, Iowa, Washington and Indiana, and losses to Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, Illinois and Minnesota. College football's current structure creates a significant discrepancy between five and six wins. If Fleming's projection comes true, Wisconsin would miss a bowl game for the second straight season and risk falling even further in the Big Ten pecking order. 6-6 finish to the regular season, meanwhile, would represent a step in the right direction and build tangible momentum entering 2026. The Badgers begin their quest for a return trip to the postseason with a Week 1 matchup against Miami (OH). 2026 5-star Edge is reportedly close to announcing his commitment

Texas A&M's future edge rotation could feature one of the elite pass rushers in the 2026 cycle, as five-star Anthony "Tank" Jones is reportedly close to making a decision, which he revealed during his recent interview with On3/Rivals reporter Hayes Fawcett on Thursday. Already known to the public, Jones is set to choose between Alabama, Oregon, and Texas A&M, all of which have hosted him for official visits this summer. Jones is an Alabama native, and right now, the Crimson Tide, who have been equally hot on the recruiting trail, remain the slight leaders, but no one is counting out the Oregon or the Aggies who have equal momentum, while coach Mike Elko and defensive line coaches Tony Jerod-Eddie and Sean Spencer have recruited Jones the hardest from the very start. During the interview, Jones discussed how all three programs stick out, ranking Alabama, Texas A&M, and Oregon in that order. While he certainly had plenty of praise for the Tide, Jones continued to point out that the Aggies have pushed the hardest since offering him during the early stages of his football career, while defensive coordinator Jay Bateman "The position coaches are a big reason why Texas A&M is so high on my list and the way Coach Bateman uses the big end position.' This season, senior edge Cashius Howell will be the player to watch for Jones if he makes another visit to College Station during the 2025 campaign, as Mike Elko is now calling plays, while he and Bateman's scheme is based around aggressive coverage in the secondary, and a pass rush that also values stopping the run. During his 2024 junior season wth St. Paul's Episcopal, Jones recorded 84 tackles, 16 sacks, and 18 tackles for loss. According to Rivals, Jones is the 23rd-ranked prospect in the cycle, the 2nd-ranked prospect in Alabama, and the 2nd-ranked Edge prospect.
