WI vs AUS 2025 2nd T20: Australia spoil Andre Russell's farewell party, Josh Inglis and Cameron Green give Aussies 2-0 lead

Andre Russell receives a guard of honour in the 2nd T20I match against Australia in Kingston. (Source: X) Andre Russell's final appearance in international cricket ended in disappointment for the all-rounder as well as the West Indies team as they succumbed to an eight-wicket loss in the second T20I match against Australia at the Sabina Park in Kingston on Wednesday. Russell, who was playing his final two T20I matches for West Indies after announcing his retirement last week, ended up on the losing side both times at his home ground in Kingston. In his final innings in international cricket, 'Dre Russ' smashed 36 off 15 balls with four sixes and two fours to power the home side to 172 for 8 after they were struggling at 98 for 5 at one stage in the second T20I match. However, the 173-run target wasn't enough for Mitchell Marsh's side as they overhauled the target with more than 4 overs to spare for the loss of just 2 wickets. Inglis and Green posted unbeaten 131 runs to surpass 118 runs put on by Aaron Finch and Glenn Maxwell. Inglis remained unbeaten on 78 from 33 balls while Green scored his second successive T20I fifty, was 56 off 32 balls. Green had also scored a half-century on Sunday in Australia's three-wicket win to open the series. The back-to-back wins at Sabina Park extended Australia's winning streak to five in the Caribbean following the 3-0 Test series sweep. Andre Russell's last show In his last innings in international cricket, the Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder was at his vintage best, the kind of shot-making which helped him win two T20 World Cups and star in domestic T20 leagues around the world. The 37-year-old all-rounder went in at 98 for 5 and dominated a 41-run sixth-wicket stand with Rovman Powell. Russell clobbered sixes on three of the first four balls off Ben Dwarshuis in the 15th over, going down the ground over the sightscreen, top-edging over the wicketkeeper and hitting over the midwicket boundary. In another over against leg-spinner Adam Zampa, Russell cut for four and then hoisted the next ball into the second tier of the stadium for six. The onslaught put so much pressure on Zampa that the experienced Australian spinner bowled consecutive wides. The all-rounder was retained for Rs 12 crore by Shah Rukh Khan's KKR ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction last year. Russell turned out in 1 Test, 56 ODIs and 85 T20 games for the West Indies. He scored 1034 ODI runs at a strike-rate of 130.22 and 1086 T20I runs with strike-rate of 162.08. He also claimed 70 ODI and 62 T20I wickets. 'I just want to say thanks again. I'm very grateful to end my career here. I played in front of my home crowd, family and friends. The result didn't go my way, but at the end of the day, I'm happy and grateful. The crowd has been amazing in the last two games,' Russell said in the post-match presentation. 'I really appreciate it. We tried our best. I feel like it's time for me to just hang it up, and wish the boys all the best moving forward. I'm very grateful for this amazing international career finishing at Sabina Park,' he added. Both teams had formed a guard of honor for Russell to walk onto the field before the match. The Australian players shook his hand and patted his back as he walked back to the pavilion following his innings. The Australian bowlers shared the wickets in the first innings, with Zampa taking 3 for 29, Glenn Maxwell returning 2/15 and Nathan Ellis finishing with 2/34. For the West Indies, some sloppy fielding, including at least five dropped catches, hurt their chances of defending the total. The T20I series moves to St. Kitts for the next three games on Friday, Saturday and Monday with Australia leading 2-0.

Texas A&M to Big Leagues: Former Aggie southpaw called up to Seattle Mariners

After months of impressive outings in MiLB, a former Texas A&M pitcher earned a call-up to Major League Baseball on Monday. Southpaw reliever Brandyn Garcia was bumped up from the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers to the Seattle Mariners. He was selected by the Mariners in the 11th round of the 2023 MLB Draft, following his senior season with the Aggies. In his first season with the High-A Everett AquaSox and Double-A Arkansas Travelers, Garcia recorded a 2.25 ERA with 134 strikeouts in 116.0 innings pitched. His performances on the bump earned him the organization's co-minor league pitcher of the year in 2024. With Garcia being just one of two left-handed relievers and the Mariners bullpen suffering from burnout, the well-earned call-up to the Major Leagues could prove to be beneficial for both parties. The 25-year-old's first appearance on the bump for the Mariners will be his MLB debut. According to MLB Pipeline, Garcia ranks as the top left-handed prospect in the organization and the No. 4 pitching prospect in the system, while also being the No. 13 overall prospect. Through 68 career minor league appearances, he has secured an 11-7 record with seven saves and a 2.49 ERA. Garcia has also struck out 184 hitters and walked just 67, which is good for 10.4 strikeouts per nine innings. Now, he will aim to continue that success at the highest level in baseball with the Mariners organization. Before he put on the Maroon and White uniform for the Aggies, Garcia led Quinnipiac in strikeouts and wins in back-to-back seasons in 2021 and 2022. Before transferring to Texas A&M, the lefty posted a 7.15 ERA with 12 starts in 61.2 innings pitched during his time with the Bobcats. Garcia's numbers improved tremendously with the Aggies in 2023, as he secured a 5.56 ERA with 56 strikeouts in 43.2 innings pitched and one save. His 3-3 overall in 27 appearances helped aid Texas A&M to an NCAA Regional appearance, which the program eventually fell flat against the Stanford Cardinal. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Granby, Connecticut, native translated that improvement on the mound during his senior season to the MiLB. With much need for arms in the starting rotation and a relief role, the Mariners organization could place Garcia on the mound in either fashion sooner rather than later. Loz cause: Queensland produce another Origin boilover to stun Daley's Blues

Shibasaki was supposedly the weak link, but his performance was as inspired as his selection. The opening try was the result of him finding the time and space required to put Xavier Coates over. This was his Adam Mogg moment. Another controversial selection, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow in the No.1 jersey, also proved a masterstroke. Chosen ahead of Broncos poster boy Reece Walsh, he proved dangerous in broken play and a rock in defence on his try line. In a rare moment of broken-field action, 'The Hammer' kept moving when the Blues had given up on the play, giving Dearden a saloon passage to glory. Later, when the Blues began the second half with purpose, he produced two try-savers in the one set. Everyone in maroon was playing above themselves. Valentine Holmes, whose goal-kicking ensured his side kept going up in increments of six, produced a bell-ringer in defence. Nobody has previously stopped Brian To'o from close range, and yet Dearden somehow managed it. But nothing would have hurt the Blues more than watching Harry Grant burrowing over just before the break, a case of his desire to score stronger than that of the defence to stop him. It was wave after wave of Maroon and the Blues could do nothing to stop it. Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai have produced so many magnificent moments on this very stage, but just couldn't get their game together. Loading Not that their forwards gave them much to play off. This was another occasion where Daley's loyalty was not rewarded. He stuck with Stefano Utoikamanu and Max King, at a time when Terrell May and Keaon Koloamatangi were making compelling cases. Would they have made a difference? We'll never know. But it only adds to the belief that the series was won before a ball was kicked, at the selection table. It will be remembered as a boilover, the Blues again unable to finish what they started. But can it really be a boilover when it keeps happening?
