Novak Djokovic shrugged off the loss of a set to cruise through to the Wimbledon second round as he launched his mission to win a record 25th Grand Slam.
The veteran Serb, a seven-time winner at the All England Club, won 6-1, 6-7 (7/9), 6-2, 6-2 against French world number 41 Alexandre Muller.
He dominated the first set on Centre Court, breaking three times, but Muller levelled the match after taking the second set tie-break.
Sixth-seeded Djokovic resumed normal service in the third set and a couple of breaks in the fourth set sealed the deal.
He has been tied with long-retired Margaret Court on 24 Grand Slam singles titles since 2023 and he believes his most realistic hope of a historic 25th win lies at the All England Club.
Djokovic, who has lost the past two Wimbledon finals to Carlos Alcaraz, has the added incentive of pulling level with the retired Roger Federer, who won a record eight men's titles at the All England Club.
He has been in every Wimbledon final since 2018 but at 38 he knows time is running out as Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner establish a stranglehold at the top of the men's game. (AFP)

No 1 seed Aryna Sabalenka sees off Marie Bouzkova to reach third round of Wimbledon
Top seed Aryna Sabalenka was given a tougher workout than she would have bargained for, but the top seed methodically dismantled Czech Marie Bouzkova 7-6, 6-4 to reach the third round of Wimbledon on Wednesday. Advertisement As the sun played hide-and-seek with the grey clouds that hovered over Centre Court, Sabalenka kept knocking on the door in the opening set but was shut out by Bouzkova each time and dropped serve with a double fault in the 11th game. A frustrated Sabalenka let out a scream when she failed to convert a breakpoint in the following game, but she quickly composed herself to force a tiebreak with a backhand winner on her next opportunity. The three-time grand slam champion from Belarus, who has a golden chance to claim her first Wimbledon title with several seeds losing early, led the tiebreak after a couple of errors from Bouzkova and wrapped up the set with a forehand winner. The women's draw was blown wide open on Tuesday when three of the top five players – French Open champion Coco Gauff, world No 3 Jessica Pegula and Olympic gold medallist Zheng Qinwen – crashed out in a string of first-round shocks. American sixth seed Madison Keys plays a backhand return to Serbia's Olga Danilovic. Chinese fans bash ‘sore loser' Zheng after Wimbledon exit, question her attitude
Chinese tennis fans made clear their disappointment after Zheng Qinwen crashed out of Wimbledon in the first round for the third straight year. The tournament's fifth seed was beaten 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 by world No 81 Katerina Siniakova late on Tuesday – the second time in three years the Czech had knocked Zheng out in the opening round of the grass grand slam. Afterwards, many on Chinese social media rounded on the 22-year-old, questioning whether she truly belonged among the world's best. 'I feel like she thinks she really is a queen,' one user said. 'Her opponent didn't win because she played well; it was because [Zheng] didn't play well. She doesn't have the power of a queen, so she needs to stop acting like one.' 'Going out in the first round at Wimbledon three times in a row – not many people can say that,' one popular comment on Weibo said. Dortmund down Monterrey to reach Club WC last eight
Dortmund down Monterrey to reach Club WC last eight Serhou Guirassy scored twice for the Bundesliga side in the victory. Photo: Reuters Serhou Guirassy continued his superb form to fire Borussia Dortmund to a 2-1 win over Sergio Ramos' Monterrey and into the Club World Cup quarter-finals. The striker scored twice in the first half and Bundesliga powerhouses Dortmund then held off the Mexican side in a battling second after German Berterame's quick strike. Former Real Madrid great Ramos had a golden chance to equalise at the end but headed wide, meaning it is Dortmund who go on to face the Spanish giants in the last eight after they beat Juventus earlier on. After grinding through several games in the blazing afternoon sun during the group stage, Dortmund were grateful to be at the air-conditioned Mercedes-Benz Stadium and played at a faster pace in Atlanta. Monterrey coach Domenec Torrent warned his side they had to defend diligently to have a hope of beating Dortmund, but the Germans picked the locks too easily to open the scoring in the 14th minute. Guirassy exchanged quick passes with Karim Adeyemi on the edge of the box to confuse defender Jorge Rodríguez, and then tucked a slick finish home at the near post. The 29-year-old Guinea international, who finished as joint-top scorer in the Uefa Champions League this season, netted his second 10 minutes later. Jesus Corona came close to levelling by accident in between, but his cross bounced back off the post. Guirassy climbed to 37 goals for the season across all competitions as he was once more teed up by the darting Adeyemi, stroking home from the edge of the box. Dortmund coach Niko Kovac anticipated Monterrey playing with aggression but his side put in the harder tackles in the first half and Jobe Bellingham was booked for needlessly flying in on Colombian playmaker Nelson Deossa. It means he will not be able to face his older brother Jude Bellingham in the quarter-final showdown against Real. Guirassy let Monterrey off the hook when he might have netted a third and Adeyemi's touch was loose when he got in behind. (AFP)
