Sixers need to find their Edgecombe in the NBA Draft

Axios24-06-2025
The Sixers have one of the top picks in Wednesday night's NBA Draft — and many looming questions about their future after last season went bust.
Why it matters: Bandwagon? There'll be no wagon to band back together this season unless the team makes some moves to inspire faith among fans who are skeptical that the Paul George-Joel Embiid experiment will work.
Embiid, the 2023 MVP, is coming off knee surgery and has only played in 58 combined games the last two seasons, per the Inquirer's Keith Pompey.
Driving the news: ESPN is projecting the Sixers will use the third pick to take Baylor's VJ Edgecombe, an explosive guard who could play alongside Tyrese Maxey for years to come.
The Sixers could also trade the pick, including a potential deal with a team that wants to take George following another injury-plagued season.
The intrigue: There's a strong Sixers contingent, including Gov. Josh Shapiro, that's prodding the team not to draft Rutgers guard Ace Bailey, who canceled a scheduled workout with the Sixers this month, per the Inquirer.
"I just don't like that," Shapiro told the " Men at Work" podcast. "He's got great talent, great upside, but if you don't want to be here, if you're not dying to be here, I don't want you to be here."
Meanwhile, Duke's Cooper Flagg is our state's most searched prospect, but good luck with that pipe dream. He's pretty much a lock to go No. 1.
What they're saying: Pompey, the Inquirer's Sixers beat writer, thinks it's too risky for the Sixers to trade the No. 3 pick and potentially not land one of their "prime targets."

Sixers free agency grades after signing Trendon Watford, Jabari Walker

It has been a quiet free agency period so far for the Philadelphia 76ers. Not armed with a ton of cap space, the Sixers have made smaller moves to improve depth and help around the margins as they move forward with their championship quest. So far, the Sixers have done the following in free agency: Not exactly moves that are on the same level as the moves made in 2024 when they brought in Paul George, but solid moves nonetheless. Philadelphia needed some depth and versatility, especially, after losing Guerschon Yabusele to the New York Knicks, and these moves do that. Here is a grade for each move made in free agency: Trendon Watford There is a lot to like about Watford's game. He can dribble, pass, get to the basket, and make an impact once he gets into the paint and draws attention from defenders. He is also athletic enough to make things happen on the defensive end and help the Sixers get out in transition. He will play a role for Philadelphia without Yabusele, but one has to wonder about his 3-point shot. The perimeter jumper is so paramount in today's NBA and while Watford can keep defenders honest, he only shot 33% from deep in 2024-25. Final grade: B-minus Eric Gordon A lot of people will criticize the move to bring back Gordon, but on a vet minimum, he is a positive player to keep in the locker room. He can still knock down the 3-ball--he shot 40.9% from deep in the 39 games he played in 2024-25--and he has a wealth of knowledge and experience to lend to the youngsters. For example, rookie VJ Edgecombe will benefit greatly from Gordon as they have a history together from playing on the Bahamian national team. Gordon will serve as Edgecombe's vet while playing sparingly and knocking down an open 3 when the opportunity arises. Final grade: B Jabari Walker Getting Walker on a two-way deal is insane value. The talent in this league is at an all-time high and the Sixers were able to get a good one in Walker. A former second-round pick of the Portland Trail Blazers, Walker is a rotational player in this league. He is a great rebounder, can knock down a corner 3, and provides a ton of hustle and energy. With Yabusele gone, there is a chance that Walker will earn a rotation spot in Philadelphia which would then lead to a standard contract--which is what he should have anyway. Final grade: A

AJ Styles Has A Hilarious Reaction To Getting Centel'd

AJ Styles doesn't understand troll accounts, but at least he can still change a flat tire. NBACentel is a parody account on Twitter/X that gained a following for its satirical (and sometimes humorous) takes on pro basketball news. The account has also been a source of controversy due to its impersonation of public figures connected to the basketball world, which has even fooled some NBA players. Advertisement Naturally, there's a pro wrestling version now. Pro Wrestling Centel wrote a fake post claiming AJ Styles said he 'doesn't use Bluetooth headphones' because he doesn't trust them, and it messes with his brain's frequency. The 'joke' was that the post featured a photo of Styles wearing a wired headset while a wireless headphones box sits in the background. 'Yeah, the thing is….those are Bluetooth headphones. The wire is plugged into my Xbox controller. I don't recall ever saying this,' AJ Styles replied. AJ Styles reacts to getting Centel'd Plenty of fans had a good laugh at Styles' expense. However, Styles was ultimately clued in on the gag… and didn't seem to care too much about being fooled. One fan tried to take a dig at Styles' 'old age,' but once again, Styles had a great response. Advertisement 'My favorite genre of Internet is old people not understanding troll accounts? ❤ Thank you I was having a bad day,' @NaomisEvilCuzin wrote on Twitter/X. 'Yeah, but we can change flat tires,' Styles replied. AJ Styles has joked about his age in the past, including during an appearance at his Fanatics Live Signing at WWE World on WrestleMania 41 weekend. Styles pulled out his 'cheater' eyeglasses to view a photo of the WrestleMania 41 set and joked about being blind. This also led to Styles asking the crowd if they recall 'the one where I walked out with a bloody face.' Styles then revealed how he accidentally cut his face open on the WrestleMania 38 stage. Former Georgia Bulldogs guard signs with Orlando Magic

A former Georgia Bulldog has caught on with an NBA team. Former Georgia guard Dakota Leffew signed with the Orlando Magic to play in the 2025 NBA Summer League, according to 247Sports. He'll look to catch on as a professional basketball player after spending one season in Athens. Leffew was an important bench guard for Georgia. A 2024 transfer from Mount St. Mary's, he averaged 9.4 points, 2 rebounds, and 1.7 assists, shooting 41.5% from the field and 33.3% from behind the arc. He helped lead the Bulldogs to their first NCAA tournament appearance in 10 years. Leffew ran out of eligibility with Georgia forcing him to look at pro options. Georgia basketball lost six of their seven leading scorers from last year, either through the NBA draft (Asa Newell), the transfer portal (Silas Demary Jr., DeShayne Montgomery, RJ Godfrey) or running out of eligibility (Tyrin Lawrence and Leffew). Leffew isn't the only Georgia player to play for the Magic at some point. Litterial Green, who is Georgia's all-time career scoring leader (2,111 total points) played for the Orlando Magic from 1992-94, his first three seasons in the NBA. Green is one of just three players in SEC men's basketball history to rack up over 2,000 points and 400 assists, along with LSU's Pete Maravich and Tennessee's Allan Houston. The Magic also traded away former Georgia guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope this offseason.
