Venetians can't move for famous faces as Bezos wedding nears finale
On the tiny Venetian island of San Pietro di Castello, an idyll off the beaten track, a party is about to start.
This is not the final bash of the 'wedding of the century' that was due to get under way next door over a high wall in the Arsenale but rather the neighbourhood's own annual street party, which has been running at least since the 1700s, when it was painted by the artist Canaletto.
'[Jeff] Bezos is no bother to us. Venice hosts a lot of events like that,' said Paolo Basili, one of the organisers of the five-day street party, which features food, book recitals, visits to the church and a regatta commemorating the 10th-century rescue of 12 local brides after they were kidnapped by pirates.
On Saturday night, dancing and live music were promised, rivalling the star-studded concert just over the wall. 'Their party is next door but ours is the important one,' Basili said.
During the three-day wedding of Bezos, the Amazon boss, and the former journalist Lauren Sánchez, ordinary Venetians and tourists found themselves sharing narrow alleys and crowded canals with the international super-rich and Hollywood stars. They could bump into the Kardashian clan shopping, or the Microsoft founder Bill Gates checking out Leonardo Da Vinci's Vitruvian Man, his illustration of the perfect human form, which is on display at a Venice exhibition.
Despite being worth an estimated $117 billion, Gates queued on Friday behind other tourists to buy his ticket for the show. He perhaps mentioned the rare chance to see the sketch to his fellow guest Ivanka Trump because she showed up on Saturday to see it, just as the newlyweds popped into Harry's Bar for lunch.
The wedding was by turns a private affair but also very public. The geography of Venice gave the public access to the celebrities in a way events in Los Angeles or London rarely do. Reporters on a boat could chat to Bezos as he sped by in his launch.
Orlando Bloom could be spotted from the water as he ate his breakfast on the terrace of the Gritti Palace hotel overlooking the Grand Canal. The British actor was billeted there alongside the singer Ellie Goulding, Leonardo DiCaprio, the Kardashians, Euphoria's Sydney Sweeney and the comedian Jerry Seinfeld. Further down the canal, the St Regis hosted guests needing a bit more police protection, including Gates, Queen Rania of Jordan and the OpenAI boss Sam Altman.
• Jeff Bezos wedding: guests watch on as vows exchanged
On Saturday, between the parties, outfit changes and cocktails, wedding guests found time to visit to a glass-blowing factory on the island of Murano. 'We were told to expect about a hundred people and I heard Leonardo Di Caprio proposed the visit because he is a fan of glass-blowing,' said Simonetta Regini, wife of the expert glass-worker Fabiano Amadi, whose creations reflect the ancient tradition on the Venetian island.
'Michele Obama, Ed Sheeran and Hilary Clinton have previously visited and the Bezos group is another boost for a craft that risks dying,' Regini said.
The wedding was set to reach its grand finale with Saturday night's party at the Arsenale. The ancient shipyard, which once turned out warships during Venice's heyday, is still partly run by the Italian military and is hidden by crenellated walls. As the 200 guests readied to party in large halls in which vast sails were once stitched, workers were setting up trestle tables and security guards were busy ejecting journalists trying to sneak in.
Forced to move there from another venue where protesters threatened to leap into surrounding canals with inflatable crocodiles, organisers barred boats from the basin at the centre of the Arsenale, which is used for the city's Biennale art and architecture shows.
Saturday's bash followed the main event on Friday, when Bezos, 61, and Sánchez, 55, exchanged vows on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, where awnings thwarted spying drones and paparazzi bobbing in boats had to strain their ears to hear the opera singer Matteo Bocelli belting out Can't Help Falling in Love.
Police were on alert on Saturday afternoon as protesters from around northern Italy who object to Bezos's wealth — and what they see as the 'Disneyfication' of Venice — gathered for a march from the train station to the Rialto bridge. 'We are against people who come here and park their superyachts outside the homes of people, including people who work for Amazon, who struggle to make it to the end of the month,' said Tommaso Cacciari, a leading protester.
But on Via Garibaldi, locals were enthusiastic about the party. 'It's sweet they chose Venice. I'm happy for them,' said Roberta, 54, who was serving at a bakery. 'It's brings in money and the right kind of tourists.'
Giancarlo Colombo, an antique dealer, added: 'We need people like him more than the daytrippers with rucksacks and sandwiches.'

Bride leaves people open-mouthed as she unveils the ‘worst haircut of my life' just 11 DAYS before her wedding
ANY bride knows the days leading up to their wedding are filled with various beauty treatments. But one bride-to-be was left speechless after going for a haircut just 11 days before tying the knot. Chloë Baños-Fermin, from Miami, went viral after showing off the results from the haircut. In the video, which amassed over 46 million views, Chloë started off with her locks in a half-up-half-down style, before unclipping the rest of her tresses . "POV you get literally the worst hair cut of your life 11 days before your wedding," the text over the video read. Then, in a shocking moment, the rest of the beauty fan's hair was revealed, and it looked like a completely different style to the rest of her luscious locks. While the bottom half of her hair came down to near her waist, the new layers gave her a mullet-look, not exactly what she was hoping for. "Alright guys... who made a voodoo doll? It's not funny anymore. Anyone good at extensions," she captioned the viral video. Understandably, other beauty fans were just as stunned by the disastrous hairstyle. "I am giving you full permission to Karen out on the hairdresser. This is one of the only valid times. My mouth literally popped open," one person commented. "Genuinely how does this happen? I have zero training as a hairdresser and can cut my own hair better with a blindfold on," a second agreed. And a third wrote, "I thought you must be overreacting. You are not." Can a £39 viral split ends cutter replace a hairdresser "Oh this hairdresser HATED you," another joked. But others used the comment section of the clip to warn others against getting a new haircut so close to a big event. "Why would you get your hair cut just before your wedding? Especially a completely different style or with a new stylist," one person pondered. "Let this be a lesson girls. No big changes so close to your wedding," another said. Meanwhile, someone else fumed: "I would be seeing that hairdresser in court over this." Luckily, just two days later the hair hopeful shared an update on her locks and revealed she managed to get the haircut sorted in time for the wedding. "I've never been happier for a stranger," one person commented, on the update video.

Leonardo DiCaprio's girlfriend Vittoria Ceretti, 27, suffers major wardrobe malfunction at Jeff Bezos's wedding in same dress worn by A-lister's ex Gisele Bundchen
Leonardo DiCaprio 's girlfriend Vittoria Ceretti suffered a dramatic wardrobe malfunction at Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez 's wedding celebrations. On Saturday, Vittoria, 27, rocked a vintage Dolce & Gabbana dress - the same dress worn by Leo's ex Gisele Bundchen to the Met Gala in 2003. Vittoria, who has been dating the Titanic star, 50, since 2023, arrived to Gritti Palace in the ornate dress, which was already seemingly looking worse for wear compared to when Gisele wore it. But by the end of the night things had got dramatically worse. In a short clip posted to the model's Instagram stories, Vittoria showed how a small hole had appeared in the front of the mesh gown as she stood in a mirrored lift. She followed this by a snap of her sat down where the dress had completely torn apart to reveal her bare tanned legs. The sexy frock looked incredible as the model was pictured setting off for just one part of the weekend-long celebrations in a water taxi, with the taupe fabric showing off her enviable slender frame. While Saturday's look was the same dress Gisele sported decades earlier, Vittoria's version had several differences, including an edgier, tattered finish to the transparent fabric. It was one of three dresses she wore during the weekend festivities, with Vittoria attending the actual ceremony in a chic plunging black dress, in addition to another vintage Dolce & Gabbana dress she was seen in on Thursday. When Gisele wore the same Dolce & Gabbana dress to the Met Gala in 2003, the dress was in more pristine condition. The funny coincidence was first pointed out by Page Six. Gisele dated Leonardo on-off from 2000 to 2005. Leo even took her as a date to the Oscars in 2005. He was 25 when the relationship began and she was around 20. They were regularly spotted at basketball games and shared a passion for raising awareness on environmental issues. Gisele told Vanity Fair in 2009, 'We were just not meant to be boyfriend and girlfriend, but I respect him enormously, and I wish him nothing but the best.' She went on to date Tom Brady in 2006 and married him in 2009 but they divorced in 2002 after 13 years of marriage and two children together. Brady was another one of the many A-listers in attendance at this weekend's nuptials. Cheers erupted as Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez exchanged vows at their $20 million Venetian wedding in front of their glamorous celebrity friends. A-List stars including Oprah Winfrey, Ivanka Trump and Usher are among stars who traveled to the private island by water to watch the romantic nuptials take place. Described as the 'wedding of a century', the 61-year-old Amazon founder and one of the world's richest men and his bride-to-be, 55, welcomed nearly 200 VIPs to Venice for three days of lavish celebrations. It was recently revealed that Bezos and Sanchez had already legally married ahead of the ceremony on San Giorgio Maggiore island. It came as guests including Kylie Jenner were forced to take cover from a freak thunderstorm during the couple's pre-wedding party inside the historic Madonna dell'Orto cloisters. The lavish event held at the Madonna dell Orto cloisters marked the start of the billionaire couple's lavish three-day wedding in Venice, Italy, which will come to a close on Saturday. However, Thursday night's star-studded soiree was brought to an early end due to the intense downpour. Guests dived for cover under the vaulted cloisters as lightening bolts flashed across the sky and thunder rumbled overhead at the end of what was a humid day with temperatures nudging 96.8° Fahrenheit. Torrential downpours and a strong wind left guests soaked as they then dashed for water taxis which had started to gather a good 45 minutes ahead of the midnight finish time. The strong gusts of winds whipped table cloths away and sent waiters scurrying for umbrellas to protect the VIP attendees.

Olivia Munn joins stars excluded from Sanchez-Bezos wedding posting pointed comments about MacKenzie Scott
A whole host of A-listers descended on Venice this week to celebrate Lauren Sanchez and Jeff Bezos ' lavish nuptials. The multi-day extravaganza - thought to have cost $20 million - saw the Amazon billionaire, 61, and his journalist bride, 55, officially wed on San Maggiore island on Friday. The likes of Sydney Sweeney, Tom Brady, Oprah Winfrey and Ivanka Trump were all in attendance. But amid the ostentatious celebrations, there were other famous faces excluded from the guest list who have since been rallying round Jeff's ex-wife MacKenzie Scott. MacKenzie, 55, and Jeff were married for 25 years before the divorce in 2019 saw her become the world's richest woman - walking away with $38 billion and a four percent stake in Amazon. She has kept a low profile throughout the very public display by Lauren and Jeff with her celebrity pals now publicly offering their words of comfort. The outpouring of support was started by 80-year-old actress Mia Farrow - whose biggest role came in psychological horror movie Rosemary's Baby - who posted an old picture of MacKenzie to Instagram on Saturday morning. She uploaded the snap alongside a caption that read: 'How awesome is MacKenzie Scott! (Jeff Bezos' first wife and mother of his four children). 'As of mid-December 2024, she had given a total of $19.3 billion to over 1600 charitable organizations.' Dozens of other stars then flooded to the comments to offer their own seemingly pointed views amid the wedding fanfare. Olivia Munn wrote: 'Truly incredible.' 'She's incredible,' agreed author Cheryl Strayed. Actress Rosanna Arquette wrote: 'She's a force of humanity and good.' Jim Carrey's ex, actress Ginger Gonzaga, said simply: 'Perfect post.' Shortly after her divorce from Jeff, MacKenzie pledged to give away at least half of her wealth, writing on The Giving Pledge that she had a 'disproportionate amount of money to share,' and wouldn't stop donating 'until the safe is empty.' While MacKenzie has retained her fortune through the success of Amazon and personal business endeavors, she has been upholding her promise, with a study from February revealing her philanthropy has been 'transformational' for over 2,000 organizations. The outpouring of support was started by 80-year-old actress Mia Farrow who posted a picture of MacKenzie to Instagram on Saturday before words of comfort from other stars flooded in Back in Venice, Lauren took to Instagram just moments after saying 'I do' on Friday to begin her huge rebrand as she deleted all of her old Instagram posts and changed her profile to include her new surname, Bezos. Earlier this week, she debuted a giant new wedding ring - an oval-cut diamond worth an estimated $4 million - to dwarf her existing $2.5 million engagement rock. Courtesy of celebrity jeweler Lorraine Schwartz, the new gem is believed to weigh in at around 30 carats. 'We don't have a lot of traditions that we're keeping,' Lauren told Vogue ahead of the big day. 'I mean, I love traditions, but for a 55-year-old woman, it's a little different.' But she did admit to keeping to the tradition of not letting her husband-to-be see her dress before the big day - despite the fact they have both been married before. 'I almost gave in,' she revealed, adding he 'begged' her for a glimpse. 'But I want it to be a surprise. As you get a little older, not many things surprise you. I can't wait to see his face.' While her a pair of earrings served as her 'something borrowed' on the wedding day, Sanchez gave her 'something blue' a cosmic twist - carrying a secret artifact from her recent 11-minute space journey. 'Blue Origin,' Sanchez said. 'It's something from my space flight.'
