Shubman Gill texted me: How Harpreet Brar joined India nets in Birmingham

India Today29-06-2025
Harpreet Brar, who impressed with his left-arm spin for Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, was seen bowling at India's training session in Birmingham ahead of the second Test against England at Edgbaston, starting July 2. The 29-year-old was spotted as a guest net bowler, and it has now been revealed that he joined the team on the request of India skipper and fellow Punjab native, Shubman Gill.advertisementThe buzz began on June 28 when Brar was seen bowling to Indian batters during nets. Dressed in non-official training gear, it quickly became apparent that he wasn't part of the squad but had been roped in for practice purposes. This sparked speculation about India's spin plans for the upcoming Test—especially after the team's heavy defeat in Headingley. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) later shared a video of Brar at the session, where he mentioned being in Swindon (his wife's hometown) when he received a message from the India captain to join the team's training the next day in Birmingham.
"My wife is from Swindon. It's very close to Birmingham, it's a 1-1.5 hour drive. I was talking to Shubman (Gill), he texted me yesterday. So I thought let's go and practice there (Birmingham)," Brar said in the BCCI video.advertisementIn addition to Brar, young Chandigarh pacer Jagjit Singh Sandhu also joined the India nets as a guest bowler, further indicating the team's intent to intensify their training ahead of a crucial Test.India's bowling attack is under scrutiny heading into Edgbaston. While Jasprit Bumrah picked up a five-wicket haul in the first innings at Leeds, his impact faded in the second as England chased down a massive 371-run target with relative ease. The rest of the pace attack struggled for consistency, while India's lone spinner, Ravindra Jadeja, managed just one wicket across both innings. This underwhelming bowling performance has led to speculation over India's potential changes for the second Test—most notably, whether they might bring in Kuldeep Yadav to bolster their spin options. Adding to the uncertainty is the question of Bumrah's availability. As part of his workload and injury management, the India skipper is expected to skip one or two matches in the five-Test series, and Edgbaston might be one of them.- Ends

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD After batting at No.6 at Headingley, he was tried out at No.3 at Edgbaston and Lord's, scoring 31, 26, 40 and 14 in four innings. His failure to convert the starts into big scores as India went 2-1 down led to his exclusion in the fourth Test at Manchester. However, India captain Shubman Gill as the visitors look to level the series. Probably the absence of Rishabh Pant, who is out of the final Test due to a fractured toe, played a role in Nair's inclusion as India wanted more batting strength. Nonetheless, it's another opportunity for Nair to seal a permanent place in the Indian Test team. Fans divided as India recall Karun Nair A failure in the fifth Test at The Oval could potentially lead to his exclusion from the India squad and the end of his international career. Indian fans were divided on coach Gautam Gambhir and Gill's decision to recall Karun Nair. A few pointed out that The Oval Test could be the final lifeline thrown at Nair. 'Karun Nair is lucky to get another chance but it's his last.. If he fails again, it's the end for him,' a fan wrote on X. Virat Kohli poked after Shubman Gill comes of age in debut series as Test captain: 'And some players dye their beard'

For someone who wasn't given much of a chance to create an impact ahead of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Shubman Gill has responded in some style. India's new Test captain has taken to the England series like grabbing a bull by its horns, having burned up the charts. Gill is the leading run-scorer of the series, having plundered 722 runs, leaving behind a trail of records, and is on the verge of a couple more big ones. What a story it has been. From being questioned for his batting skills outside of India, to becoming the most standout batter of the series, Gill has come a long way, and it's just his maiden series as captain. Virat Kohli, left, and Shubman Gill during the pink ball Test last year (AFP) Also Read: Follow India vs England 5th Test Day 1 More importantly, Gill has adapted beautifully to the void left by Virat Kohli. The former India Test stalwart's retirement meant that the No. 4 slot was left vacant. And Gill, who was earlier tried as opener and at No. 3, has more than done justice to the position, scoring three centuries and a double hundred to lead India by example. He may have lost all five tosses thus far, but despite training 1-2 in the series, the skipper has already learnt a lot in less than two months in his role as Test captain. Varun Aaron fires a curveball That Gill has grown exponentially in his first assignment – a big one – is a true testament to his character. But at the same time, the fact that it comes on the heels of Kohli walking away from Test cricket draws an interesting parallel. Former India pacer Varun Aaron weighed in on the same, expressing that captaincy takes a heavy toll mentally, and how it ages people multiple times than usual. Also, reacting to Kohli's revelation that he now has to dye his beard, Aaron quipped at the former India captain. "That's what happens to all Indian captains. They come in with a full bunch of black hair and leave with a lot of salt and pepper. And then, some even dye their beard," he said, triggering a laugh among the studio experts. "Shubman Gill has kind of come full circle; he is the Test team captain, has batted so well, more than 700 runs. Any words or phrases would fall short to describe his batting. This Test is going to define his legacy going forward as a captain," Aaron said on the Sony Sports Network. Kohli, who attended an event hosted by Yuvraj Singh, was asked about his decision to retire from Test cricket. While he did not address it in as many words, he did mention, "I just coloured my beard two days ago. You know it's time when you are colouring your beard every four days."
