Liberty's Breanna Stewart avoids significant injury on right leg, AP source says
NEW YORK (AP) — New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart avoided a significant injury when she hurt her right leg in a game Saturday night, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. HT Image The All-Star forward had imaging done and nothing major turned up, according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Sunday because no official statement had been made. She will travel with the team on its four-game road trip that begins in Dallas on Monday night, the person said. Stewart left the game nearly 3 1/2 minutes into the Liberty's 101-99 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks. She had three points and a rebound. Stewart seemed to injure the leg while running up the court. She went to the locker room and never returned to the bench. 'No update, hopefully she'll be OK,' coach Sandy Brondello said the Liberty's five-game winning streak was snapped. New York was playing the second half of a back-to-back. Stewart had a quiet scoring game in Friday's win over Phoenix, with just six points. She did have eight rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals. Stewart came into Saturday's game averaging 19 points, 6.8 rebounds and 4.0 assists on the season to help New York (17-7) to the second-best record in the league. The two-time WNBA MVP hadn't missed a game yet this season. After playing much of July at home, New York will be on the road for five of its next six games. New York also had two other injuries; Kennedy Burke had some cramps and Leonie Fiebich has been dealing with a hand injury she suffered against Phoenix. Brady Singer tosses gem to secure Reds sweep of Rays
Brady Singer bounced back from one of his worst outings of the season by allowing just one run in 7 1/3 innings as the Cincinnati Reds completed a three-game series sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays, 2-1, Sunday in Cincinnati. HT Image The Reds have followed up a three-game skid with a four-game winning streak and improved to 6-3 since the All-Star break, with Thursday's trade deadline looming. Cincinnati also improved to 56-50, a season-high six games over .500. Tampa Bay, on the other hand, lost its seventh straight on the road and has won just three of 16 on the road since a sweep of Kansas City June 24-26. Overall, the Rays have lost 18 of 25 since June 27. Singer (8-8) allowed just one run and three hits over 7 1/3 innings, six days after allowing seven runs over 2 1/3 innings last Monday in a 10-8 loss to Washington. Throwing for a third consecutive day, Emilio Pagan pitched a scoreless ninth for his 22nd save. The game didn't start smoothly for Singer, who allowed a leadoff single to Chandler Simpson and hit the second batter Yandy Diaz with a pitch. But catcher Jose Trevino threw out Simpson trying to steal second to help Singer get out of further trouble. Singer retired the next six batters before hitting Matt Thaiss with one out in the third. Singer lost his shutout with one out in the eighth when Taylor Walls belted a first-pitch breaking ball to the seats in right for his fourth homer, cutting Cincinnati's lead to 2-1. It was Walls' error on Saturday night that opened the door for Cincinnati's first two runs in a 6-2 Cincinnati victory. The frustration continued Sunday in the first inning when he could not field a chopper over the mound from Austin Hays cleanly, allowing TJ Friedl to score from second base. Gavin Lux followed with a chopper that first baseman Jonathan Aranda fielded, but he couldn't throw out Matt McLain at the plate. Instead Aranda threw onto first for an RBI groundout and it was 2-0 Cincinnati. It was a tough luck start for right hander Shane Baz (8-7), who threw four shutout innings after the two-run first. Fever and Sky meet without Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese
The latest clash between the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky will not include Caitlin Clark or Angel Reese. HT Image Clark will miss the game due to her right groin injury while Reese's back injury led the team to rule her out shortly before her Sky squad hosts the Fever on Sunday afternoon. Reese missed Chicago's 95-57 loss to the visiting Seattle Storm on Thursday and was listed as questionable by the Sky late Saturday afternoon. It should be noted Reese was listed with the same label prior to sitting out against Seattle. Reese is averaging 13.8 points and a league-best 12.5 rebounds. Clark is out for the fourth straight regular-season contest -- she also sat out last weekend's All-Star game -- due to her third injury of the season. She missed time with left groin and left quadriceps ailments earlier this season and has missed 13 games overall. The Fever (13-12) are getting used to playing without Clark. "If we have Caitlin, great," Indiana forward Sophie Cunningham said after scoring 15 points in Thursday's 80-70 home victory over the Las Vegas Aces. "And we know how to play with her. If we don't have Caitlin, great, we know how to play without her. And I think that's just so important." All-Star guard Kelsey Mitchell has thrived by scoring 20 points or more in five of Indiana's past six games. Mitchell ranks fourth in the WNBA in scoring at 19.6 points per game. Mitchell scored 21 points against the Aces. Natasha Howard was 6-of-9 shooting and had 18 points and 13 rebounds. "Our defense got our offense going," Howard said postgame on Thursday.
