World Environment Day: Nearly 1,50,000 saplings planted in Coimbatore district

Various departments -- including panchayats, the corporation, revenue and forest -- conducted a plantation drive in both urban and rural areas.
The administration used half-grown saplings, which were at least four to five feet tall, to ensure a high survival rate.
Around 15,000 trees were planted at the Arignar Anna Co-operative Industrial Estate in Kittampalayam in Sulur taluk.
Addressing the media after the inauguration of the drive, the collector stated, 'The district's forest cover and canopy cover will certainly improve with proper maintenance of these saplings.
All these efforts are part of the state's Green Tamil Nadu Mission.'
Meanwhile, the city corporation has targeted to plant 25,000 trees in all the five zones. The civic body's main priority is to utilise available spaces, including parks, government vacant lands, school grounds, open spaces and sites in Vellalore.
Commenting on this plantation drive, corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran told TOI, 'The main concept was to get 7-9 feet tall saplings.
These will have low maintenance and a high survival rate. After a series of observations, it was found that short saplings were subjected to unintentional damage like being cut along with other invasive plant and getting crushed by stray cows or other animals. Watering them was a major challenge while bigger saplings can be watered only when required.
The monsoon rains are sufficient for their growth in the upcoming months.
All the saplings planted are ensured with geo-tagging and uploaded with photos in the Green Kovai Application.'
As part of the World Environment Day celebrations, students from corporation schools showcased various experiments on rainwater harvesting, sustainable lifestyles, eco-friendly projects and robotics concepts. The corporation launched an awareness campaign encouraging the public to stop using single-use polythene bags and other plastic materials. Private colleges, NGOs and various community organisations in the city organised awareness programmes, including student rallies.

Jhunjhunu/Jaipur: Chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma Sunday launched a massive statewide green drive, declaring the goal to plant 50 crore trees in five years under the Mission Hariyalo Rajasthan. These urban green spaces aim to improve air quality and provide natural havens in densely populated towns. To preserve biodiversity, the state is implementing the One District One Species program, promoting native flora. Under the Aravalli Green Development Project, ₹250 crore is being spent in 19 Aravalli districts to carry out soil works over 3,700 hectares, followed by plantation next year. Special efforts are also being made to green desert districts like Barmer and Jaisalmer. CM Sharma emphasized that the role of every citizen is vital in protecting the environment. "Planting a tree in your mother's name is not just a gesture—it's a movement that can define our future," he said.

BMC to speed up drain, road works on city stretch after prod by citizen reporters
1 2 Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to expedite drain and road construction on the stretch between Mangala Mandir Square and an apartment in Nayapalli's Behera Sahi area after citizen reporters flagged concerns about its poor condition. Citizens had expressed concerns about piled-up soil, protruding iron rods and concrete plates occupying the carriageway, with rains making the situation worse for commuters. "During the peak of the monsoon season, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation is undertaking road and drain construction, leading to significant construction debris and obstructions on the roads. The digging and accumulation of soil are making the roads slippery, especially with the rainfall. If urgent measures are not implemented, it could result in accidents," wrote Bisworanjan Dash on TOI's Citizen Reporter app. As construction is going on, the around 500-metre stretch with remnants of removed drain covers and stagnant water along the under-construction road has turned into a safety hazard for pedestrians and commuters. Water storage in Isarda dam from July 30
Bhilwara: With construction of the Isarda dam project on the Banas River nearing completion, the irrigation department has issued orders for starting water storage from July 30. As per the initial plan, preparations are on to have the dam filled up to 3.27 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) out of its 10.77 TMC capacity. Constructed at a cost of Rs 615 crore, Isarda dam will supply water to seven towns and 1,256 villages in Dausa and Sawai Madhopur districts. It is the second largest in Tonk district after Bisalpur, which has a capacity of 38.800 TMC. Strategically positioned between Banetha and Isarda villages on the Tonk-Sawai Madhopur border, the dam features a 600-metre concrete structure with 28 gates. Water levels can reach a height of 262 RL metres, addressing the water needs of the region. Despite multiple deadline extensions, the dam is now completed nearly 95%. Keeping the monsoon rains in view, the Water Resources Department has ordered that from July 30, water will be stored in phases in the Isarda dam until Sept 15, marking a significant milestone for the project. Executive engineer of the Isarda Dam Project, Vikas Garg, told TOI, "Now, water is released daily from two gates of the Bisalpur Dam into the Banas River. The irrigation department in Jaipur has issued orders to stop water in the Isarda dam in phases until Sept 15. For the first time, water will be retained in the dam starting July 30, and we are fully prepared to do so." The dam is a critical part of the Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project (ERCP), with plans to channel water from Isarda to the Ramgarh dam.
