Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan to write to governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arelekar, convey objection on Bharat Mata portrait
Thiruvananthapuram: The cabinet on Wednesday decided that chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan will formally convey to governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar the govt's strong objection to the use of Bharat Mata portrait, allegedly linked to RSS, at official events hosted by Raj Bhavan. The chief minister will write to the governor that only official emblems may be used at govt functions and that the use of any other symbolic images violates constitutional norms. The cabinet decision follows separate incidents in which ministers V Sivankutty and P Prasad boycotted Raj Bhavan programmes over the display of the portrait. The law department had examined the matter before the govt finalised its stand. Incidentally, a private function attended by the governor at Kerala University Senate Hall campus on Wednesday also witnessed protests over the display of the portrait. The university registrar denied permission for the event, marking 50 years since the Emergency, but the organisers -- Sree Padmanabha Seva Samithi, a pro-BJP organisation -- refused to remove the portrait, arguing that they had paid rent for the hall. The governor ignored the registrar's advice not to attend the event given the situation and addressed the gathering amidst protests. Minister V Sivankutty had walked out of a Scouts and Guides event at Raj Bhavan after finding the Bharat Mata portrait on stage. He chose to leave the programme after addressing the students and making his protest known. He later stated that Raj Bhavan was turning into a "political centre". A few days earlier, agriculture minister P Prasad boycotted a World Environment Day event hosted by Raj Bhavan, which was originally scheduled to be organised in association with the agriculture department. Raj Bhavan insisted on including a floral tribute and the lighting of a ceremonial lamp in front of the Bharat Mata portrait. The minister's office informed Raj Bhavan in advance that such elements could not be part of an official govt programme, but Raj Bhavan insisted on them. The department later conducted its programme on Secretariat premises. Following these incidents, the CM also publicly criticised Raj Bhavan, stating that the RSS should not be allowed to impose its beliefs on others and warning that the constitutional office of the governor should not be politicised.
