How an expectant woman's hankerings led to a new restaurant in Modesto

Yahoo03-04-2025
Sushi lovers in northeast Modesto will be bowled over with a fresh new option for lunch and dinner.
'My husband was really into boba teas, and I was into poke bowls, so when this opportunity popped up, it just seemed perfect,' said Navjot Kaur. She and her husband, Harpreet Singh, operate the newly opened Pokemoto, located in Village One Plaza.
Kaur said she got the idea for the business in 2023 when looking for dining options as an expectant mother. 'I was craving sushi, but knowing you should not eat raw fish while pregnant, I tried a poke bowl with chicken instead,' she said. 'I was obsessed — it was all the flavor of sushi without the risk.'
A short time later, Kaur said, she was served a Facebook ad for Pokemoto franchise opportunities and it felt like a sign.
Within a few months, Kaur and Singh were scouting locations in Modesto. Kaur said customers have told her they are excited to have this option on this side of town. 'People have been coming in and trying this instead of something fried or with oil,' she said. 'They're saying, 'This is something healthy and delicious that we needed.''
Pokemoto specializes in Hawaiian-style poke bowls, which usually are pieces of raw tuna and salmon served over sushi rice with an assortment of toppings, from avocado to seaweed and many umami things in between. Bowls range from $14.99 to $16.99, and higher if you add extras.
The bowls are fully customizable, but if building your own seems too daunting, there are five signature bowls on the menu. For those unsure about uncooked proteins, bowls can be made with chicken, shrimp, Spam, and tofu. Kaur said the bowls are generous, and they offer salad instead of rice, if preferred, or a bowl made into a poke burrito, which is similar to a large sushi roll.
Singh recommends a boba drink to accompany your bowl. Pokemoto offers about a dozen types of iced boba tea, with or without milk and tapioca pearls, in flavors including mango, taro, watermelon, matcha and lychee. Teas start at $4.99 for a regular, up to $5.99 for a large. Kaur said they offer a happy hour from 3 to 5 p.m. daily, featuring boba teas at half price.
The restaurant also offers a variety of cold salads, including seaweed, lobster, and kani. There are also miso soup and Spam musubi made fresh to order.
Thomas Nguyen, the founder and owner of the Pokemoto franchise, was at the opening to support Kaur and Singh. After living in Hawaii, he started the company in Connecticut in 2017 when he found little to no poke restaurants in the New England area.
In just eight years, Pokemoto now has over 40 locations nationwide. In California, there was only one Pokemoto, in Petaluma. The Modesto store is the second location in the state.
Kaur and Singh said they hope to add more locations in the Central Valley over the next few years and already are looking to expand in Manteca and Ceres.
'We think the concept is unique because it offers something for adults and kids, fresh food and sweet drinks,' said Kaur. 'Other poke places are more focused on just the poke, but this one is focused not only on the older generation but the younger generation, too.'
The store had a two-day soft opening and then a three-day grand opening that started on March 28.
Pokemoto is at 3020 Floyd Ave, Suite 103. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and offers online ordering and delivery service through GrubHub.

How much is UNC's football program valued at?

How much does the UNC football program cost? Thanks to the invention of NIL money and the transfer portal, college football continues to become increasingly professional by the day. UNC's 2025 offseason is a perfect illustration of the changing CFB landscape. Needing a starting quarterback for the fall, North Carolina paid $4 million to land South Alabama transfer quarterback Gio Lopez. The Tar Heels replaced their entire starting defensive line through the portal, plus added Marshall kicker Rece Verhoff. With college football now essentially a "mini-NFL," the question of selling teams comes into play. In The Athletic's recent "valuation rankings", UNC would sell for $572 million, making it the 26th-most valuable college football franchise. North Carolina is one spot behind Ole Miss, which has a $591 million price tag, plus a spot ahead of South Carolina ($563 million.) The Tar Heels generate an average $63.6 million in annual football revenue, a figure that is lowest amongst the Top 30. The portal is a great addition to college sports, particularly for senior-heavy teams needing to replace a plethora of starters, but the portal is also essentially free agency. Think about professional sports: you have franchise cornerstones, who remain on the same rosters for extended periods of time, but trades and free agency create a sense of unknown. UNC has high expectations heading into its 2025 season, thanks to hiring 8-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick as its next head coach. If North Carolina somehow wins the ACC and makes the College Football Playoff, its program value will shoot up closer towards SEC numbers. If the Tar Heels struggle again this fall, their value will stay the same – or even decrease. People are less likely to pay and see a losing product, which UNC proved to be again in 2024. Have a ‘Golden Girls' Cheesecake Moment at This New Ferry Building Shop

is the associate editor for the Northern California and Pacific Northwest region writing about restaurant and bar trends, coffee and cafes, and pop-ups. A Pacific Northwest-raised chef's cheesecake outfit is headed to San Francisco's waterfront. Nash Bakes has taken over the former Palmvy Hot Dogs kiosk inside the Ferry Building. Owner Jared Nash baked at Northern California restaurants, including now-closed Julia's Kitchen and Orson. He's been grinding on the Peninsula since fall 2023, popping up at the San Carlos Farmers Market and Robert's Market on Woodside Road. The Nash Bakes kiosk will be open seven days a week, 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., following suit with the push into evening service at the Ferry Building. The operation looks a lot like the Ocean Malasada outpost that debuted in July 2024, bringing Hawaiian treats to a corner near Gott's Roadside. Unlike Ocean Malasada, Nash Bakes serves a surprisingly wide array of cheesecake varieties. There are classics, including raspberry swirl and salted caramel, six-inch pies going for $30. There's a gluten-free vanilla bean, too, and a lemon poppyseed cheesecake, both a bit outside the general belt for the treat. Further in the outer rim of flavors might be the salmon lox, a caper-dill cheesecake atop a toasted bagel crust with the salmon, capers, and pickled onion flowering from the center like a fishy bouquet. His pastry chef background is no joke. Nash grew up outside of Portland, Oregon, and worked in commercial bakeries at grocers, including Fred Meyer. Then came culinary school, which led to an internship at the Hyatt in Lake Tahoe. That stint led to eight years crisscrossing the lake's food scene. He worked as pastry chef under San Francisco pastry wiz Nicole Plue at Napa's Julia's Kitchen. Then he was a pastry chef at Orson, then under Arnold Eric Wong, the executive chef of E&O Trading Company. If that wasn't enough, he worked under celebrity chef Elizabeth Faulkner, to boot. Mulberry cheesecake from Nash Bakes. Nash Bakes Reflecting that cheffed-up background, Nash serves plenty of seasonal options squarely in the fine dining realm: light purple mulberry cheesecakes when the fruit is ripe in the summer, a margarita cheesecake on a pretzel crust for Cinco de Mayo, a malted Easter egg for the eponymous event. At the kiosk, he'll be headed back to the basics until he's got his sea legs. The launch menu is simple: vanilla, chocolate, cookies and cream, lemon poppy, raspberry swirl, passionfruit, black sesame, and the salmon lox. Some of those seasonal cheesecakes and one-offs — peanut butter and mint chip, for instance — will come down the road. Nash opens his kiosk on Wednesday, July 23; the goal right now is to open quietly and make sure things are moving slowly, then he'll announce a grand opening on social media. Historically, he works out of commissary kitchens, which he says can be almost turnkey with the green light from city officials. All that said, he's not sure what the future of Nash Bakes looks like. The Peninsula farmers' markets have treated him well. This Ferry Building opportunity just came out of the sky, one of the partners there spotted him and invited him to check out the location. A year from now, he'd love to be opening new storefronts or selling at even more farmers markets. 'This is an opportunity for me to get things moving on a regular basis,' Nash says. 'Let's give it a year or two and see where it goes, let the Ferry Building lead me a bit.' Nash Bakes (1 Ferry Building, Kiosk five) debuts on Wednesday, July 23, and will be open seven days a week from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Eater SF All your essential food and restaurant intel delivered to you Email (required) Sign Up By submitting your email, you agree to our Terms and Privacy Notice . Many Ecwid merchants focus on product titles, descriptions & tags, but often forget one of the most important elements for accessibility and search visibility: image alt text. Alt text (alternate text) is what screen readers use to describe images to visually impaired users. It is also a critical component of ADA compliance & WCAG accessibility guidelines. More importantly, alt text helps search engines understand what your images are about, making your store more discoverable on Google. However, writing alt text for hundreds (or thousands) of product images manually? That is where most merchants drop off. AltTextify is the first and only AI-powered alt text generator for Ecwid's App Market. With just one click, you can automatically generate SEO optimized, ADA compliant alt text for all your product images, saving time, boosting SEO & enhancing accessibility. How it works: AI-Powered Descriptions: AltTextify uses advanced image recognition and product data to generate natural, keyword-friendly alt text. AltTextify takes what is typically a tedious, manual task & turns it into an efficient, one-click solution. To maximize visibility for your AltTextify plugin on Ecwid, here are 3 SEO-rich places to include it naturally: 1. Ecwid Help Center or Community Forums Many Ecwid merchants ask how to improve their SEO or make their stores accessible. You can answer relevant threads with advice and include a link to AltTextify as a solution: 'Looking for an easier way to generate image alt text for your store? Try Alt Text plugin for Ecwid, an AI-based plugin that helps boost both accessibility and SEO.' 2. Guest Blog Posts or Partner Sites Consider writing a guest article for a web design or digital marketing blog, targeting Ecwid users. For example: 'Tools like AltTextify can help store owners create inclusive, search-friendly stores without spending hours on manual tagging.' 3. Your Product Listing or Feature Page Ensure your own marketing pages, SEO snippets (or) paid ad landing pages include this anchor: 'Use AltTextify for Ecwid to automatically generate alt text and improve your image SEO today.' A great product image might catch a customers eye, but without descriptive alt text, it stays invisible to both search engines and users with screen readers. With Ecwid's streamlined commerce tools and AltTextify's smart automation, you get the best of both worlds: a high-performing, accessible, and SEO‑optimized store that reaches more customers. If you are ready to elevate your Ecwid store's image SEO and accessibility, AltTextify is just one click away. TIME BUSINESS NEWS
