UK temperatures to turn warmer after heavy rain and thunderstorms cause yellow weather warnings
While scattered showers can be expected in the days to come, the Met Office predicts the weather will become more settled with sunnier spells and highs in the mid-twenties.
Paul Gundersen, chief meteorologist at the Met Office said: 'This week's weather will be changeable, starting off with a yellow warning for thunderstorms covering much of the UK today and into this evening, whilst another yellow warning is in place for heavy rain across western Scotland.
'Further showers may cause localised disruption on Tuesday and Wednesday, but many places will miss these and see sunny spells.
'Temperatures for the week ahead will generally be near average, though it will feel warm in sunnier spots and cooler under persistent cloud and rain.
'Winds will be moderate for most, occasionally fresh around coasts. By the weekend, conditions are expected to settle down slightly, with drier and brighter spells developing more widely. The picture will become clearer closer to the time, so do keep an eye on the Met Office forecast'
It comes after the Environment Agency issued a warning to motorists that thunderstorms could lead them to become stranded in floodwater, and urged them not to drive through deep or fast-flowing water.
The Met Office also warned storms could pose a danger to life as well as damage to homes and businesses from flood water and lightning strikes, and transport delays and road closures.
Tom Morgan, Met Office presenter and meteorologist, said: 'By Monday evening, that rain will be starting to ease very slowly, but there'll still be showery outbreaks of rain through this evening and overnight for many northern and western parts of the UK.'
In parts of Scotland, yellow warnings for thunderstorms remain in place on Tuesday, while the rest of the country is expected to see a more mixed picture of sunny spells and scattered showers.
The wet weather comes after a dry and hot spring and three heatwaves so far this summer which left four regions of England in drought.
England recorded its driest March to June period since 1893, according to the Environment Agency, and dry ground can make flooding more likely as it is unable absorb as much water.

RNLI rescue three kayakers from rocks in Cornwall
Three kayakers have been rescued by inshore lifeboat crews after their boat sank near RNLI said volunteers were called to the incident at 19:50 BST on Thursday following reports of shouts for help in the Talland Bay said the kayakers abandoned their boat and scrambled on to rocks, while one of the three made their way to a nearby beach to get a phone signal to call for group were described as cold and wet, but uninjured. UK hot weather forecast as temperatures set to soar above sweltering 30C
New weather maps have revealed what major cities could be hit by scorching temperatures of up to 31C. It comes after areas across the UK have been dampened by rain Brits have been told to get out their hats and sunglasses as temperatures could climb back up to 30C due to an Iberian plume next month. New weather maps, from WXCharts, have revealed what major cities are set to heat up from as early as August 6. The charts, which are covered in red to symbolise sweltering conditions, showed that southern and south-eastern England could experience highs of 31C. After the short spell, the balmy temperatures could re-appear later this month. According to the maps, hot air will move from southwestern Europe from August 1, causing a wrath of heat to hit several cities. Birmingham and Gloucester are likely to be plunged under the conditions first. The town of Reading has also been mapped for hot temperatures. London, Southampton and Brighton are also expected to be hit by the sizzling conditions, with a fourth heatwave on the cards. However, before tropical temperatures return, parts of the UK could experience showers and fierce winds. The Met Office's long-range forecast, from July 29 to August 7, states: "A weather regime dominated by westerly winds is likely at first. This will likely bring rain and showers at times interspersed with periods of more settled weather. The north and west will most likely be the focus of any wetter and windier weather, where there may be some prolonged spells of rain at times. The highest chance of drier and sunnier weather is expected across southern and eastern parts of the country. "Through the period, high pressure may start to have greater influence as it builds northeast across the country. This bringing more prolonged settled spells to many areas. Breeziest conditions across the north of the country. Temperatures generally near average though with some warmer spells likely." The forecast, from August 8 to August 22, said: "While westerly winds will bring changeable conditions at times, some settled spells are likely to develop during August. These bringing more prolonged dry and sunny weather, especially across the south of the country but potentially spreading to all areas at times. Temperatures will likely be near or above average overall. There is a chance of some very warm or hot spells, especially in the south and east."

THIS is the horror moment flash flooding smashes southern Spain turning roads to rivers and sending Brits running. Murcia, the region around Benidorm, has been lashed by wild weather just two weeks after thunderstorms hit the country and swept two away. 7 7 7 Lightning cracked along the beloved beach at Benidorm with Brits forced to take shelter and the holiday hotspot turning to a ghost town as folks hid. Towns southwest of the city were the hardest hit as several homes were evacuated and some 90litres of rain fell per square metre in the worst hit areas. Footage shows flooding in the streets of the idyllic towns with a torrent of water running down streets. Murky brown water rushed along the streets of Moratalla while thick sheets of golf-sized hail balls blanketed Caravaca de la Cruz and smashed the windscreens of parked cars. Hail measuring more than two centimetres across could fall, which combined with the rain, has lead officials to plan for more flooding.
