Haj concludes without incidents, says Saudi ministry

KUALA LUMPUR: Haj 2025 (1446H) has concluded without any reported incidents, marking one of the safest and most efficiently managed pilgrimages in recent years, said Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Interior.
Saudi Interior Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Naif said this year's successful operation was due to early planning, precise execution, constant monitoring, and the keen awareness of pilgrims.
"This achievement was made possible through exceptional security efforts and the use of cutting-edge technologies," he said in a statement issued following the successful completion of haj rituals, free of incidents or overcrowding.
According to the ministry, the season was marked by meticulous organisation, advanced healthcare services, smooth mobility, and a secure environment — with Saudis on social media referring to a "haj without incidents".
The ministry said the successful outcome reflected the integration of proactive planning, smart technologies, and robust security preparedness, reinforcing Saudi Arabia's global leadership in crowd management and its efficient and innovative organisation of one of the world's largest religious gatherings.
The Saudi authorities had conducted extensive and rigorous drills simulating real-life emergency scenarios and crowd control strategies ahead of the haj season, it said.
Over 1.6 million pilgrims from 171 countries performed their haj this year.

Road closures in Bukit Mertajam for St Anne Feast this weekend

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Several roads near the Minor Basilica of St Anne will be closed from 9 am Saturday to 2 pm Sunday for the annual St Anne Feast, one of Malaysia's largest religious gatherings. The closures aim to manage traffic flow as over 100,000 visitors are expected. Seberang Perai Tengah police chief ACP Helmi Aris confirmed the affected stretch includes Jalan Kulim, from the Caltex petrol station to the Taman Bukit Indah traffic lights. Motorists from Kulim heading to Bukit Mertajam can use Jalan Rozhan or Jalan Sepakat, continuing to Jalan Muhibbah and Jalan Kampung Baru before exiting through Taman B. For those travelling from Bukit Mertajam to Kulim, alternative routes include Jalan Kampung Baru towards Jalan Berjaya, then onto Jalan Song Ban Kheng and Jalan Kampung Baru, leading to Alma and Bukit Minyak. Another option is Jalan Kampung Batu through Taman B to reconnect with Jalan Kulim. A candlelight procession on Saturday evening (7 pm to 11 pm) will also prompt rolling closures along Jalan Kampung Baru and Jalan Berjaya. All roads are expected to reopen by 2 pm Sunday. The St Anne Feast, celebrated annually on July 26, draws pilgrims nationwide and internationally. The church was designated a Minor Basilica in 2019, reinforcing its significance in the Catholic faith. Authorities advise the public to follow traffic police directions and use suggested detours. - Bernama

Pulau Aur Residents Appeal For Boat Fare Subsidy

MERSING, July 24 (Bernama) -- Residents of Pulau Aur are calling on the Johor government to introduce a boat fare subsidy to ease travel costs, especially for medical needs and family visits. Currently, a return trip to the mainland costs up to RM210 per person, a heavy burden for many in the B40 income group, according to housewife Hatasa Rabudin, 40. 'I rarely visit my parents in Kampung Teluk Berhala because the boat fare alone is RM105 one way,' she said during a media visit to the island recently. She recalled pooling RM7,000 with relatives in 2018 to charter a ferry home for Hari Raya, adding that her chronically ill father also has to travel twice a month to Mersing for treatment. 'There's a village clinic on the island, but more serious cases need referral to the mainland,' she said, urging the state to consider a subsidy similar to Pahang's initiative for Pulau Tioman residents. Long-time Mersing resident Masli Sulaiman, 56, added that deteriorating infrastructure has made boat travel the only option even between nearby villages. 'There used to be a land route to the jetty, but now it's overgrown and the main bridge is damaged. A subsidy would help in emergencies and allow more frequent visits to elderly relatives,' she said. Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK) chairman Sabinah Md Seth said most locals are fishermen or small-scale farmers without stable income and even a partial subsidy would ease their burden. Located 76 kilometres from the mainland, Pulau Aur is a popular ecotourism destination and a strategic route for local and international fishing vessels. From July 18–20, 50 Johor Corporation (JCorp) volunteers and six media representatives took part in a coral reef rehabilitation programme on the island.
