Syria swears in new transitional government months after Assad's removal

Syria's new transitional government was sworn on Saturday, March 29 nearly four months after the Assad family was removed from power and as the new authorities in Damascus work to bring back stability to the war-torn country.
The 23-member Cabinet, which is religiously and ethnically mixed, is the first in the country's five-year transitional period and replaces the interim government that was formed shortly after Bashar Assad was removed from power in early December.
The Cabinet does not have a prime minister since according to the temporary constitution signed by interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa earlier this month, the government will have a secretary general.
The government that was announced ahead of Eid el-Fitr, the feast that marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan that starts in Syria on Monday, March 31, includes new faces apart from the ministers of foreign affairs and defense. They kept the posts they held in the interim government. Syria's new Interior Minister Anas Khattab was until recently the head of the intelligence department.
'The formation of a new government today is a declaration of our joint will to build a new state,' al-Sharaa said in a speech marking the formation of the government.
Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra said his main goal will be to build a professional army 'from the people and for the people.'
The government did not include members of the US-backed and Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces or the autonomous civil administration in northeast Syria. Al-Sharaa and SDF commander Mazloum Abdi signed a breakthrough deal earlier this month in Damascus on a nationwide ceasefire and the merging of the US-backed force into the Syrian army.
Among the new ministers whose names were announced late Saturday night were Hind Kabawat, a Christian activist who was opposed to Assad since the conflict began in March 2011. Kabawat was named minister of minister of social affairs and labor.
Another minister is Raed Saleh, who for years headed the Syrian Civil Defense, also known as White Helmets, and was named minister for emergency disasters. A Damascus-based Syrian Kurd, Mohammed Terko was named minister of education.
Mohammed al-Bashir, who has headed Syria's interim government since Assad's fall, was named minister of energy whose main mission will be to restore the electricity and oil sectors that were badly damaged during the conflict.
The new government's main mission is to try to end the war and bring stability to the country that witnessed clashes and revenge killings earlier this month in the coastal region that is home to members of the minority Alawite sect. The violence left more than 1,000 people, mostly Alawites, dead. Assad is an Alawite.
Most of Syria's insurgent groups now running the country are Sunnis, but the presence of members of minority sects, including one woman and members of minority sects including an Alawite, is a message from al-Sharaa to Western countries that have been demanding that women and minorities be part of Syria's political process.
The announcement of a religiously mixed government aims to try to convince Western countries to lift crippling economic sanctions that were imposed on Assad more than a decade ago. The UN says that 90% of Syrians are below the poverty line, while millions face cuts in food aid as a result of the war.
Hours before the government was announced, the US State Department cautioned U.S. citizens of the increased possibility of attacks during the Eid el-Fitr holiday, which it said could target embassies, international organizations and Syrian public institutions in Damascus. It added that methods of attack could include, but are not limited to, individual attackers, armed gunmen, or the use of explosive devices.

Taarek Refaat The first deliveries of Azerbaijani natural gas to Syria through Turkish territory began Saturday, marking the launch of a regional energy corridor linking the three countries. The inauguration ceremony for the new gas transmission line was attended by Syrian Energy Minister Mohammad Al-Bashir, Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, Azerbaijani Economy Minister Mikayil Jabbarov, and representatives from the Qatar Fund for Development, which is providing financial support for the project. Minister Al-Bashir hailed the new regional pipeline as a strategic step toward strengthening Syria's energy security. He said the project would directly improve electricity generation capacity, extend daily operating hours for power plants, and contribute to economic recovery and better living conditions, supporting efforts to bring displaced Syrians back to their communities. Under the first phase of the agreement, Syria will receive about 3.4 million cubic meters of gas per day, enabling the production of an additional 750 megawatts of electricity. This, Al-Bashir said, would add roughly four extra hours of electricity supply per day, fueling industrial growth and stimulating the broader economy. The gas deliveries are being facilitated under a trilateral cooperation framework supported by Qatar. Youssef Al-Youssef, director of the Syrian Gas Company, said the initial pumping began from the Harjalah border station north of Aleppo to the city's thermal power plant. Initial flows amount to 745,000 cubic meters per day and will be ramped up over the coming week to the full 3.4 million cubic meters. The supply will be distributed among the Aleppo thermal plant and gas-fired power stations in other provinces. The pipeline route runs from Harjalah through the Tounian plant, then to the Al-Biyarat area in Palmyra, where it branches to feed the Jandal and Tishreen power stations. Once fully operational, the gas is expected to generate between 750 and 800 megawatt-hours of electricity daily, strengthening the stability of Syria's national grid. While the infrastructure can currently handle the planned volumes, further upgrades will be needed if supply increases in the future. According to Turkey's Energy Minister, electricity exports to Syria are currently conducted through eight connection points. Plans are underway to increase this capacity by 25% initially, eventually more than doubling it. Portugal to consider recognizing Palestinian state in September - War on Gaza
Portugal will consider recognizing the State of Palestine at the UN in September, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro's office said Thursday. France, Britain, and Canada have all recently voiced, in some cases qualified, intentions to diplomatically recognize a Palestinian state. These moves come amid growing international concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where Israel's 22-month war and five-month blockade have pushed 2.3 million people into famine. According to Gaza's Health Ministry, the death toll from Israel's war since October 7, 2023, has risen to 60,332, with 147,643 injured. The majority of the dead are women and children. Portugal "is considering recognition of the Palestinian state, as part of a procedure that could be concluded during the high‑level week of the 80th United Nations General Assembly, to be held in New York in September," the statement said. The decision was made after "multiple contacts" with partners, given "the extremely worrying developments in the conflict, both from a humanitarian perspective and through repeated references to a possible annexation of Palestinian territories" by Israel, the statement added. A UN-backed international hunger monitoring organisation on Tuesday said: "Famine thresholds have been reached for food consumption in most of the Gaza Strip and for acute malnutrition in Gaza City." The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) alert warned that the "worst-case scenario of famine is currently playing out in the Gaza Strip" under Israel's blockade. Portugal may join other countries such as Britain, Canada, and France, which have signalled their intention to recognize the Palestinian state in September. Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron said his country would officially recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in September, hoping to create collective momentum in this direction. Ukraine says hit military targets and pipeline in Russia - War in Ukraine
Ukraine said Saturday it hit military targets and a gas pipeline in drone attacks in Russia, where local authorities said three people were killed and two others wounded. Ukraine's SBU security service said the strikes, carried out Friday night by long-distance drones, hit a military airfield in the southwestern town of Primorsko-Akhtarsk. They caused a fire in an areas where Iranian-built Shahed drones -- relied on by Russia to attack Ukraine -- were stored, the SBU said. It said the strikes also hit a company, Elektropribor, in Russia's southern Penza region, which it said "works for the Russian military-industrial complex", making military digital networks, aviation devices, armoured vehicles and ships. The governor for the Penza region, Oleg Melnichenko, said on Telegram that one woman had been killed and two other people were wounded in that attack. Russia's defence ministry said its air-defence systems had destroyed 112 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory -- 34 over the Rostov region -- in a nearly nine-hour period, from Friday night to Saturday morning. An elderly man was killed inside a house that caught fire due to falling drone debris in the Samara region, governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev posted on Telegram. In the Rostov region, a guard at an industrial facility was killed after a drone attack and a fire in one of the site's buildings, acting Rostov governor Yuri Sliusar said. "The military repelled a massive air attack during the night," destroying drones over seven districts, Sliusar posted on Telegram. Heavy use of drones Ukraine has regularly used drones to hit targets inside Russia as it fights back against Moscow's military offensive, launched in February 2022. Russia, too, has increasingly deployed the unmanned aerial devices against Ukraine. An AFP analysis published on Friday showed that Russia's forces in July launched an unprecedented number of drones, 6,297 of them. The figure included decoy drones sent into Ukraine's skies in efforts to saturate the country's air-defence systems. In Ukraine's central-eastern Dnipropetrovsk region, Russian drone attacks Friday night wounded three people, governor Sergiy Lysak wrote on Telegram. Several buildings, homes and cars were damaged, he said. Russian forces have claimed advances in Dnipropetrovsk, recently announcing the capture of two villages there, part of Moscow's accelerated capture of territory in July, according to AFP's analysis of data from the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW). Kyiv denies any Russian presence in the Dnipropetrovsk area. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has consistently rejected calls for a ceasefire in the more than three-year conflict, said Friday that he wanted peace but that his demands for ending Moscow's military offensive were "unchanged". Those demands include that Ukraine abandon territory and end ambitions to join NATO. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, meanwhile, said only Putin could end the war and renewed his call for a meeting between the two leaders. "The United States has proposed this.
