St Mirren legend's daughter speaks after losing dad to alcoholism

Glasgow Times11-05-2025
The 'no-nonsense' midfielder, who came through the youth ranks of St Mirren Football Club, captained the Buddies to their 1987 Scottish Cup win and played for Partick Thistle in the late 80s, died in June 2024 following alcohol-related health issues.
He was just 65 years old.

The Paisley-born baller, who also played for the likes of Dunfermline Athletic, Cowdenbeath and East Stirlingshire, battled with severe alcoholism when his playing days ended - which Abercromby detailed in his biography, Aber's Gonnae Get Ye.
(Image: Hayley Quigg, pictured by Colin Mearns, Newsquest) Billy's daughter, Hayley Quigg, told the Glasgow Times: 'I've seen first-hand the effects alcoholism has on people and the damage it causes families.
'Glasgow in general has a huge problem with alcohol addiction.'
In a bid to raise awareness of the effects of alcoholism and addiction, Hayley – who hails from Crookston - will be taking on the Step Up For Charity event on June 7.
The fundraiser will see the 37-year-old mum and her dance partner, Craig, take the floor to dance the samba. They will compete against 11 other couples, each performing a different dance style.
(Image: Pictures taken by Colin Mearns, Newsquest) (Image: Pictures taken by Colin Mearns, Newsquest) Hayley said she was desperate to take part and raise money for a great cause. She hopes that taking part in the event – which is similar to Strictly Come Dancing - will be a fitting tribute to her late dad too.
She added: 'It is a great concept for an event and as an adult who has a 14-month-old child, I don't always have the opportunity to perform.'

Speaking on the 'deserving' charity, Hayley said: 'NERC aims to promote and assist with recovery for individuals and families. It is a recovery community with comprehensive programmes.
'I have chosen the charity because it helps people to sustain their recovery and is a lifeline for many. I really hope that the money raised can help others fight their addiction and help with their road to recovery.
'Every penny donated will make a massive difference.'

(Image: Pictures taken by Colin Mearns, Newsquest) Anne-Marie Quigg, who is Hayley's mother and sits on the board for NERC, said: 'NERC is a recovery community with comprehensive drug programmes which support people through the entire journey.
'They encourage people to put down drink and drugs and go into education or employment. They even take people away for retreats and keep them safe.'
Anne-Marie is 34 years into recovery.
The 66-year-old added: 'When I first got into recovery, there was only Alcoholic Anonymous (AA) meetings, and they were full of men.
'That was so daunting for me at the time, but the help for people nowadays is bigger and better.'
(Image: Pictures taken by Colin Mearns, Newsquest) Anne-Marie went on to say: 'If this fundraiser can make people aware that there are options out there to get help, then that's a good thing.'

I want to enjoy every single moment – Kieran Tierney relishing Celtic return

The Scotland defender will run out on the Celtic Park pitch for the first time since leaving for Arsenal six years ago, when the Hoops host Newcastle in a pre-season friendly on Saturday. The 28-year-old took advantage of freedom of contract to agree a return to his boyhood club in January and is delighted to be back. 'It's probably the easiest signing Celtic's had to make and easiest decision I've had to make as well,' he said. 'When I knew I was going to be a free agent in the summer, things can happen in January so the talks obviously started then. And once we found out it wouldn't happen in January, it would be the summer, first thing in the summer.' Looking ahead to Saturday, he said: 'It'll be amazing, it'll be a special day. Probably a little bit of nerves as well because it's the first time I've done it in so long. But I've spent a huge chunk of my life here, a big part of my career and still lots to go, so I'll be absolutely buzzing for it. 'You always miss it, you do miss it. It's a club that I think, I won't be the only one who says it, when you're away from it, you do miss it, you miss the people in the club, the fans, the atmosphere and just everything about the club. 'You do miss it, but now I'm back here and I want to enjoy every single moment again and make the most of it. 'Even when I left, I remember my first interview at Arsenal. One of the media guys asked me: 'Do you think you'll go back to Celtic?' 'So it's something that's always been spoken about with me, when will it happen, when will it happen? 'You never know for sure but when the opportunity came then it was a no-brainer.' Tierney won eight major trophies before heading to Arsenal, where he won an FA Cup winners' medal, and he plans to pick up where he left off. When asked about his targets, he said: 'Personal and the collective one for me is just the same: it's just to keep Celtic as successful as possible, maintain our place at the top.' Tierney is set for a hero's welcome after his pre-contract agreement was celebrated among supporters in January. 'They've been brilliant,' he said. 'Just leaving the training ground earlier, there were lots of people there asking for autographs and pictures and welcoming me back. Kieran Tierney with the Scottish Cup during his first spell at Celtic 'It just makes you feel at home already. Although you've not played back at Celtic Park or the league's not started, you still feel at home already. 'There's some stuff that's the exact same, it feels like you've never been away. But even when you go up to Lennoxtown, the training ground's come on massively. It's a great place to be but it's still a lot of the same people. 'A lot of new players for me to get used to as well but it's been great.'

Jamie Borthwick's EastEnders future 'uncertain' as BBC questioned amid John Torode sacking

EastEnders'Jamie Borthwick kept his job after using an ableist slur when he was on Strictly, but Masterchef judge John Torode was sacked over racism allegations. Jamie Borthwick's time on EastEnders has reportedly been brought into question amid the BBC's sacking of John Torode. ‌ It previously emerged that actor, who plays Jay Brown on the BBC soap, had used a disabled slur when he appeared on Strictly Come Dancing last year, and after it was revealed that Masterchef judge John Torode had been sacked from the broadcaster's culinary competition show for allegedly using the N-word twice, insiders have claimed that the "difference in treatment" of each of the stars has become a topic of concern, especially when considering the "very similar" nature of the complaints. ‌ A source told The Sun: "The BBC have tied themselves into knots with this - for them both stars appear to have used unacceptable and offensive language but only one has been sacked while another has kept his lucrative salary and got away with just a suspension. There doesn't appear to be any rhyme nor reason with how the BBC chooses to implement its own rules and people are questioning why." ‌ The insider also claimed that various disabled colleagues have been left with questions over the incident, and claimed that they don't feel taken "seriously" when it comes to ableist slurs, adding: "Disabled colleagues have been left wondering why incidents of ableist slurs seemingly aren't being taken as seriously as racist language and there are no clear answers coming from bosses.' The 30-year-old actor has since apologised for using the derogatory word to describe locals in Blackpool, where Strictly filmed their special ballroom towards the end of 2024. It's reported footage was made of Jamie using the word, which was then sent to one of his friends. After the allegations emerged, Jamie issued an apology, stating: "I want to apologise sincerely and wholeheartedly for the words I used in the video showing my reaction to making it through Blackpool week on Strictly. I am deeply sorry for any offence and upset my words and actions have caused. ‌ At the time, the soap star rounded off his statement by claiming that he "did not fully understand" the term he used, but still took full responsibility for his actions, as he said: "It is no excuse, but I did not fully understand the derogatory term I used and its meaning. That is on me completely. Now I am aware, I am deeply embarrassed to have used the term and directed it in the way I did. It was wrong." Last month, it was claimed that Jamie was trying to "right the wrongs" in his life but, according to an ex, it was "not clear" at that stage whether he would keep his EastEnders job. News of John's allegations emerged on Tuesday after production company Banijay said that an investigation into his co-star Gregg Wallace 's behaviour by firm Lewis Silkin had "substantiated an accusation of highly offensive racist language against" John, 59. John however said in a statement: "I have no recollection of what I'm accused of." ‌ It's now been suggested that John, who had co-hosted the cooking show since 2005, used the N-word twice. John is said to vehemently deny ever using the racial slur. Earlier this week John came forward as the person alleged to have used racist language, after the allegation was upheld in a report into John's colleague Gregg Wallace's behaviour. John said he had no memory of making the comment and denies it ever happened. Later, Richard Osman spoke out to claim the ex MasterChef host used the 'worst racial slur there is'. And now it's been reported Torode allegedly used the N-word twice. ‌ The Sun reports that he repeated lyrics, containing the N-word, from Kanye West 's song Gold Digger at an after-work gathering six or seven years ago. He's then said to have used the word again whilst speaking to a member of the MasterChef production team. John allegedly used the word a second time when speaking to a member of the production team, described as a "pal" who reportedly didn't take offence. According to the outlet, the person who raised the complaint on that occasion is said to have overheard the conversation. His friend reportedly thought John used the slur as an "example" and "apologised afterwards". The publication adds that it's been told that John vehemently denies ever using the N-word, whether that be in song lyrics or otherwise. A source said that he's "utterly devastated" and "just wants to clear his name" amid the scandal.

Ex-Strictly star Giovanni Pernice shows off his incredible 5-week body transformation with shirtless before-and-after snap

Giovanni Pernice unveiled his dramatic five-week body transformation on Instagram on Thursday. The former Strictly Come Dancing star, 34, proudly flaunted his sculpted physique and defined six-pack in a shirtless before-and-after photo. Proud of his progress so far, he simply captioned the post: '5 week in' alongside a bicep emoji. Fans were quick to flood the comments, praising the professional dancer's sensational new look and dedication, achieved in just a matter of weeks. One fan wrote: 'Well done you - hard work and consistency pays off, and the mindset of a champ.'; 'Wow gio ❤️❤️ looking good.' 'Well done hardwork❤️ always pays off (clap hands emoji)'; 'Wow (love heart eyes and flame emoji) ❤️.' The incredible transformation post comes after Giovanni put on a very loved-up display with his girlfriend Bianca Guaccero as they enjoyed a trip to the beach during their holiday in Barbados. The TV personality shared a kiss with the Italian actress, 44, as they enjoyed their day at the Caribbean island's iconic Sandy Lane Hotel. The couple were the winning pair on the Italian version of the BBC show, Ballando con le Stelle, and Giovanni gushed that Bianca 'was exactly what he needed' following the bombshell allegations made by Amanda Abbington. And after revealing his 'world collapsed' when his friends abandoned him following the allegations, Giovanni explained how Bianca was 'very supportive'. He told Heat magazine: 'She came into my life during not the greatest time, so I needed some security. Giovanni revealed the pair have had to make 'sacrifices' to 'make their relationship work' as Bianca is currently busy working in Italy, where she is based, while the dancer prepares to tour the UK for the next seven months. In April, it was revealed that Giovanni will not be returning to Strictly Come Dancing despite hinting at a comeback and the findings of the BBC's misconduct report into his behaviour. Revealing the cast of this year's Strictly Come Dancing, which will air in August, Giovanni was notably absent from the list. In April, it was revealed that Giovanni will not be returning to Strictly Come Dancing despite hinting at a comeback and the findings of the BBC's misconduct report into his behaviour over the Amanda Abbington bullying row (both pictured on the show in 2023) Giovanni and Bianca Guaccero were the winning pair on the Italian version of the BBC show, Ballando con le Stelle, last year (both pictured last year) Dianne Buswell, Nadiya Bychkova, Amy Dowden, Karen Hauer, Katya Jones, Neil Jones, Nikita Kuzmin, Gorka Marquez, Luba Mushtuk and Jowita Przysta are among those returning to the dance floor this September. They will be joined by Johannes Radebe, Aljaž Škorjanec, Nancy Xu, Lauren Oakley, Michelle Tsiakkas and Vito Coppola, who will all take to the floor once more alongside two new stars. Carlos Gu and Kai Widdrington will be returning after not appearing in the 2024 edition. In July last year, more than six months after Amanda quit Strictly, citing 'personal reasons', the actress accused Giovanni of 'unnecessary, cruel and mean behaviour' during their time dancing together on Strictly. Giovanni rejected the claims immediately, and a BBC investigation ruled in September that her claims of physical aggression and threatening behaviour were not upheld. Complaints of verbal bullying and harassment meant the BBC issued an apology, but Giovanni said he was 'pleased the report has not found any evidence of threatening or abusive behaviour'. Now officially cleared by the investigation, Giovanni has returned to the spotlight - currently dancing on the Italian version of Strictly and touring with close friend and fellow Strictly star Anton Du Beke, 58.
