Cecil Beaton's Garden Party at the The Garden Museum review: a chance to wallow in Beaton's charm and gaiety
This little show is his life told through flowers. There's a fabulous photo of Rex Whistler at the outset, reclining with a mandolin and knee breeches, which sets the tone. Then there's his early life, taking pictures of his mother and sisters in the gardens; an account of his years at Ashcombe; his royal photography - and clever Cecil managed simultaneously to keep Wallis Simpson and Queen Elizabeth onside in 1937, making the latter look less dumpy than ethereal in the garden with a parasol. There are his opera and ballet sets, including a model for the stage for Turandot (we are reminded that his war work including a stint in the Far East which he put to use artistically) and there are some of his costume designs for My Fair Lady – plus the Oscar statuette he got for his costume work on the film. There are some charming letters to him from his gardener, letting him know how the prized delphiniums were getting on.

Set against the backdrop of 1984, the storyline is inspired by a true event where Michael Larsen etched his name as a notorious figure on the show Press Your Luck. The movie showcases exactly how he managed it and the mayhem it stirred up off-screen. Portraying Larsen is Paul Walter Hauser, recognised for his performances in Cobra Kai, Inside Out 2, and Richard Jewell. He's joined by a cast that includes Walton Goggins of The White Lotus fame and Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams. Also among the cast is David Strathairn, who plays real-life TV executive Bill Carruthers, reports Surrey Live. The audience who've stumbled upon this lesser-known flick have praised what they've witnessed while finding themselves enthralled by its outlandish true-life origins. It was succinctly summed up by one viewer: "This movie is like the sandwich you decided to try and ended up loving it." One enthusiastic cinema-goer exclaimed: "This needs to win an Oscar. This is one of the best films I've ever seen it is amazing. I don't want to spoil it but no one has gone to see it because the Minecraft movie came out the same day and people right now would rather watch that because of the memes which makes me upset. You need to watch this now." Conversely, there was someone who wasn't entirely sold on the film's classification as a thriller stating: "I didn't know the true story behind it and the Sky description said it's a thriller. I love thrillers but this movie isn't always suspenseful. It's certainly a movie like no other." Elsewhere, another viewer suggested: "Overall, The Luckiest Man in America is a must-see film that balances heart and humour, leaving me feeling inspired and hopeful. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a compelling and uplifting cinematic experience!" Show host, comedian Lee Mack, was left gobsmacked when he realised just how many players had been unable to identify the correct answer. But for thirty-two people, it was the 40% question that put an end to their hopes of winning. Turning to the remaining players, Lee posed a question which was all about identifying which statement had to be false. The star said: "Which of these would it be impossible to do?" He then read aloud the three options. These were - "marry your cousin's cousin", "marry your brother's widow" or " marry your widow's sister". The contestants were then given 30 seconds to attempt to correctly identify the answer but for 32 - it was clearly a struggle. Reacting in shock as time was up, Lee remarked: "Wow! That is massive! "32 people went out on that one. Let's have a look at the answer." Amid gasps from the crowd, Lee told them that the right answer was - "marry your widow's sister". Tricky 1% Club question forces 13 contestants to use their pass to stay in the game - but would you have got it right? This was the correct answer as it would be impossible to marry your own widow's sister as you would already be dead. Cracking out another joke, Lee said: "And before we get any complaints, yes, I accept that is a bit Zombie-ist!" It increased the prize fund up to a huge £90,000 as the quiz entered into the 35% question. Dawn Steele to star in new Edinburgh Festival Fringe play
She will star opposite Braveheart star James Robinson, who played a young William Wallace in Mel Gibson's Oscar-winning epic, in Skye: A Thriller at Summerhall next month. The drama, which will run from July 31-25 August, is expected to explore ghosts, grief and family relationships. Dawn Steele has been starring in the crime drama Granite Harbour recently. Picture: Robert Pereira Hind Glasgow-born Steele, who starred in six series of Monarch of the Glen between 1999 and went on to appear in 2004, went on to appear in the TV shows Soul of Souls, River City, Wild at Heart, Shetland and Holby City. Most recently, she has played Detective Chief Inspector Cora MacMillan in the BBC Scotland crime drama Granite Harbour. Steele's previous stage appearances include the National Theatre of Scotland adaptation of John Byrne's award-winning TV drama Tutti Frutti, Byrne's play Cutting a Rug, the David Harrower play Blackbird, the Greek tragedy Medea and the Agatha Christie play Verdict. Robinson, who has starred in the TV shows Doctors, Casualty and Outlander, appeared on stage recently in the Royal Lyceum production Macbeth (an undoing). Keel is bringing Skye: A Thriller to the Fringe after producing a number of previous plays at the festival, including Bullring Techno Makeout James and The Last Show Before We Die. She made her name as an author last year with debut novel The Four, about a group of boarding school students bound by a chilling secret. The synopsis for her new Fringe show states: '1995. Holidaying on the Isle of Skye, Annie and her siblings glimpse their father across the beach. Which seems impossible, because he died four years ago. 'What follows is a relentless search for the truth, on a rugged island where real people and ghosts seem to walk hand in hand among the mountains and lochs.' Keel said: 'I'm very excited to be making my first foray into playwriting this year. 'I've spent many happy(ish) summers producing brilliant new plays in Edinburgh and I'm thrilled that Skye: A Thriller will have its première at the greatest arts festival in the world, alongside two wonderful plays I'm co-producing. 'It's a bonus that Skye will be a co-production with Summerhall, a venue I've always loved, as it enters a very exciting new chapter.'
