Glasgow Times3 days ago
The 2025/26 tour of Matthew Bourne's The Red Shoes will be the first run of the show since the 2020 tour was cut short due to Covid-19.

This new tour will be in celebration of the double Olivier award-winning show's 10th anniversary.

Ashley Shaw, Cordelia Braithwaite, Hannah Kremer, and Holly Saw will all take on the role of Victoria Page, while Andy Monaghan and Reece Causton will play Boris Lermontov.
Dominic North and Leonardo McCorkindale will portray Julian Kraster, with Michela Meazza, Cordelia Braithwaite, and Katrina Lyndon as Irina Boronskaya.
They are joined by Liam Mower, Will Bozier, and Jackson Fisch as Ivan Boleslawsky, and Glenn Graham, Liam Mower, and Reece Causton as Grischa Ljubov.
Mr Bourne said: "I'm thrilled to announce today that 11 of the original cast of The Red Shoes, which premiered in 2016, are returning for this 10th Anniversary production, performing the roles they created, possibly, for the last time.
"The Red Shoes was the culmination of a twenty-year ambition to bring Powell and Pressburger's seminal 1948 film to the stage.
"It was also, in many ways, a personal love letter to a life in theatre and dance."
Joining the lead roles are Mark Austin, Isabella Chandler, Adam Davies, Cameron Flynn, Anna-Maria de Freitas, Christina Gibbs, Thomas Ireson, Rosanna Lindsey, Callum Mann, Daisy May Kemp, Jarrod McWilliams, Matthew Potulski, Molly Shaw-Downie, Kingston Taylor, Shakiera Ward, and Daisy West.
After a successful residency at Sadler's Wells for New Adventures' 23rd consecutive Christmas season, the Glasgow performances will mark the start of The Red Shoes' UK tour.
Mr Bourne's production of The Red Shoes is an adaptation of Powell and Pressburger's 1948 film, which is an Academy Award-winning movie.
The Red Shoes tells the story of a girl's dream to be the greatest dancer in the world, and her struggle between the two men who inspire her passion.
The production is set to a score orchestrated by Terry Davies, featuring music by Bernard Herrmann, with designs by Lez Brotherston, Paule Constable, and Paul Groothuis.
The show was an instant hit when it premiered in 2016, with the world premiere season selling out before it even opened.
It then went on to win Best Entertainment at the 2017 Olivier Awards, with Mr Bourne being awarded Best Theatre Choreographer.
Mr Bourne said: "I'm so happy to see it return this year, especially as our last tour in 2020 was sadly cut short by the pandemic and left many of our loyal audiences throughout the UK disappointed.
"So, welcome back to the Ballet Lermontov and to paraphrase the great impresario himself… 'It's time to put on the red shoes, Vicky, and dance for us again....'"

LL Cool J and Jazmine Sullivan back out of Philadelphia July Fourth festival in solidarity with local union

Hip-hop legend LL Cool J announced that he was pulling out of a Fourth of July festival in Philadelphia in support of municipal workers' ongoing strike in the city. 'There's absolutely no way that I could perform, cross a picket line and pick up money when I know that people are out there fighting for a living wage,' he said Thursday in a video posted on X. He made the announcement the night before the Wawa Welcome America Festival, Philadelphia's annual July Fourth celebration. LL Cool J was set to headline the festival along with Grammy-winning singer Jazmine Sullivan. He continued by saying he hoped 'the city can make a deal' and that he plans to be in Philadelphia 'in case it works out.' The union, District Council 33 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, began its strike at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday morning after no new agreement for a higher-paying contract was reached. Union members are responsible for essential public services, such as 911 dispatch and sanitation. The union responded to LL Cool J on social media, saying it was encouraging to see him use his influence 'to champion causes that matter to everyday people.' 'LL Cool J's decision to stand in solidarity with the labor movement by choosing not to cross a picket line is a powerful testament to his respect for workers' rights,' the union said in a statement. Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker said she was aware of LL Cool J's decision to not perform and she had 'spoke personally' with him. 'I respect his decision, and understand his desire to see the city unified. He is always welcome in Philadelphia,' she said in a statement. Hours before she was set to perform, Sullivan also announced she was backing out of the festival in solidarity with the union. 'Today I choose to not perform at the Wawa Welcome America concert and stand with Philly's DC33 until the city and union find a way to bring fair living wages to our working class,' Sullivan wrote on Instagram. Parker confirmed that Sullivan had also decided not to perform, saying, 'I respect Jazmine's decision, and understand her desire to see our City unified,' adding: 'Jazmine, your hometown loves you!' Greg Boulware, the union president, said he was 'profoundly humbled' by Sullivan's decision to back out of her performance. 'It's truly refreshing to witness a celebrity of her stature and a native Philadelphian recognizing and valuing the tireless dedication of municipal workers,' he said in a statement. Wawa Welcome America is one of the nation's largest July Fourth celebrations. A representative for the festival did not immediately respond to a request for comment. On July 1 — after the city of Philadelphia was granted three injunctions — a judge ordered some union members to return to work. In response, the union encouraged affected members to 'comply with this directive immediately to avoid any legal consequences.'

Nile Rodgers to guest-curate display at new David Bowie Centre

London's V&A Museum, which is behind the new David Bowie Centre, said Rodgers has also selected a bespoke Peter Hall suit worn by Bowie during the Serious Moonlight tour for the Let's Dance album. Photographs of Bowie, Rodgers and guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan recording Let's Dance in New York will also feature. The David Bowie Centre will open within the museum's new East Storehouse in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, in Stratford, east London, on September 13, where it will host items including costumes worn during the singer's Ziggy Stardust period. Rodgers said: 'My creative life with David Bowie provided the greatest success of his incredible career, but our friendship was just as rewarding. 'Our bond was built on a love of the music that had both made and saved our lives.' Rodgers produced Bowie's single Let's Dance and the 1983 album of the same name, as well as his 1993 album Black Tie White Noise, with the personal correspondence in the exhibition relating to the latter. Brit Award-winning indie rock band The Last Dinner Party have also curated part of the exhibition, describing Bowie as a 'constant source of inspiration to us'. Their items include Bowie's elaborate handwritten lyrics for his song Win, and notes and set lists for his 1976 Isolar tour. The band said: 'David Bowie continues to inspire generations of artists like us to stand up for ourselves. 'It was such a thrill to explore Bowie's archive, and see first hand the process that went into his world-building and how he created a sense of community and belonging for those that felt like outcasts or alienated – something that's really important to us in our work too.' Access to the David Bowie Centre will be free, with tickets released nearer its opening. The David Bowie archive, which boasts more than 90,000 items, was acquired by the V&A with the help of the David Bowie Estate, the Blavatnik Family Foundation and Warner Music Group. The centre will be spread across three zones, which will include curated displays, audio visual installations and quieter study areas, allowing visitors to view the Bowie archive on their own, from musical instruments to stage models. Small displays will tell the stories behind the singer's albums and also look at his multi-dimensional creative approach, including unrealised projects, collaborations and influences. The East Storehouse opened at the end of May, and features the Order An Object initiative, allowing visitors to pre-book to see an item from its entire collection. The V&A will also open the V&A East Museum in spring 2026, in an area named East Bank. Its main museum is in South Kensington, west London, and it also runs the Young V&A in Bethnal Green, east London.
