Yankees Predicted to Land Pirates Two-Time All-Star In Last-Minute Blockbuster

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Yankees have to quickly start picking up some arms. Thursday's 6 p.m. ET trade deadline is fast approaching, and so far, the Yankees have done all their damage on the position player side. Ryan McMahon, Amed Rosario, and Austin Slater could all be helpful, but none of them are going to strike out opposing batters in key situations. As Devin Williams' latest blown save on Wednesday displayed, the Yankees could use another option in high-leverage situations. Perhaps the Pittsburgh Pirates, who are obvious sellers at this point, will come to their aid. PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - APRIL 19: David Bednar #51 of the Pittsburgh Pirates reacts after striking out a batter in the ninth inning during a game against the Cleveland Guardians at PNC Park on April 19, 2025 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. MoreOn Thursday, Adam Weinrib of FanSided predicted that the Yankees would land Pirates closer David Bednar, a two-time All-Star, before the deadline. "(YES Network's) Jack Curry singled out Bednar on Wednesday night for good reason; when he speaks to endorse an option rather than refute one, it's usually because a deal has been substantially discussed," wrote Weinrib. "Bednar is on an absolute heater in Pittsburgh, and while he went through a difficult year-long slump in 2024, he'd be the highest-upside closer the Yankees could bring on at this point in time. It'll cost 'em, but we know the Pirates are scouting Carlos Lagrange. Add Roc Riggio for some MLB-ready thump and JC Escarra and call it in?" Bednar, 30, has an impressive 2.37 ERA on the year, striking out 51 batters in 38 innings. Perhaps even more importantly, he's under team control for next season, and would project to take over as closer on a full-time basis at that time. The clock is ticking, and every contending team wants relief pitchers at this time of year. Will the Yankees pull through for Bednar? More MLB: Braves Cutting Ties With Marcell Ozuna? Rangers Predicted To Land Pirates Star Closer In 2-For-1 Deadline Swap

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Texas Rangers are seemingly ready to buy at the trade deadline as they chase a wild card berth into the postseason. It's quite a risk for the team to take, considering they're not seen as a powerhouse anymore, but if the front office can add controllable talent, they'll be fine. Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller recently predicted the Rangers would swing a trade for Pittsburgh Pirates closer David Bednar in a deal that sends pitchers Winston Santos and Mitch Bratt back to the Pirates. PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - APRIL 19: David Bednar #51 of the Pittsburgh Pirates reacts after striking out a batter in the ninth inning during a game against the Cleveland Guardians at PNC Park on April 19,... More"David Bednar had a disastrous 2024 campaign with a 5.77 ERA, but the Pirates' primary closer has been back to his two-time All Star self in 2025," Miller wrote. "He had a 2.25 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 11.3 K/9 from 2021-23 and is sitting on similar numbers this year—2.37, 1.10 and 12.1, respectively. "Though he has one year of arbitration eligibility remaining, there's really no question he's likely to be dealt. Pittsburgh didn't deal Ke'Bryan Hayes with five years left on his contract just to sit out what has been an incredibly lucrative deadline for sellers with relievers to offer." Bednar is seemingly the top relief pitcher name on the market, besides Athletics superstar Mason Miller, but Miller's trade sweepstakes seem more like a fantasy than a reality. Bednar, on the other hand, is almost certainly going to be traded. For the Rangers, this is a move that makes sense because he has team control beyond this season. If Texas falls short of the postseason, which seems like a very realistic possibility, the team will be able to run it back next season. The Pirates would likely want to land more than this proposed package, but if the Rangers added another mid-level prospect, the deal would likely go through. Astros' Jose Altuve Speaks About Potential Reunion With $200M Ex-Teammate

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Houston Astros entered the trade deadline with a lead in the American League West division, but the rival Seattle Mariners are turning up the pressure. The Mariners added perhaps the most coveted slugger on the block when they agreed to trade for Eugenio Suarez, who will join former Arizona Diamondbacks teammate Josh Naylor in the batting order after the Mariners swung a surprising trade for him as well. Hoping to retain their lead in the division, the Astros have been linked to several potential blockbusters, including one that would spark a reunion with Minnesota Twins superstar Carlos Correa. "Carlos Correa acknowledged ongoing trade discussions between the Houston Astros and Minnesota Twins on Wednesday," according to Chandler Rome and Dan Hayes of The Athletic. "Twins sources said the Astros approached them to discuss Correa, who reiterated he's in 'full control' because of a no-trade clause included in the six-year deal he signed with the Twins in 2023. Even so, the Twins believe the Astros are the one team Correa might approve for a trade because he maintains an offseason home in the Houston area." (Photo by) More Mistry/Getty Correa played with the Astros for seven seasons before joining the Twins. He helped Houston win the 2017 World Series championship that was ultimately tainted by a cheating scandal. He's now in the third season of a $200 million contract with Minnesota, which might make it hard for a new team to take him on, but a former teammate from that championship run seemed to endorse the idea of bringing him back. "Correa is a guy with a lot of history here in Houston," Astros outfielder Jose Altuve told reporters, per Rome and Hayes. "He's a great player, great human being, great teammate. Anything that happens, I hope it's the best for him and for us." Correa has suffered several injury setbacks since leaving the Astros and his production hasn't been as consistent. But as the Astros look to make a significant addition and reach the playoffs once again this year, a surprising trade reunion could be in the cards.
