BJP raises spectre of ‘political Islam' infiltrating Church in Kerala

The Hindu21 hours ago
The BJP has raised the spectre of 'political Islam' infiltrating the Church in Kerala. The party's State vice-president Shone George told a news conference on Monday (August 4, 2025) that radical Islamists, beholden to the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and Jamaat-e-Islami, had infiltrated Church protests in sizeable numbers, including those led by bishops, across the State.
He noted the presence of Islamist elements in demonstrations led by Church leaders and the laity in several locations, including Kannur, Thalassery, Kozhikode, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Mananthavady, Angamaly and Ernakulam.
'I talked to the senior-most prelate in Kerala on Monday. He seemed not to be concerned about the presence of radical Islamists among the demonstrators,' he added.
Asked to adduce evidence to back his charges, Mr. George asked mediapersons to contact the State police intelligence or mine their sources in the localities.
Mr. George alleged that the SDPI's gambit was to use the arrest of the nuns as a foil for alienating Christians from the BJP. The SDPI and Jamaat-e-Islami's tactics had the tacit backing of the Congress and Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)].
He accused the ruling front and the Opposition of seeking to frustrate the efforts of the BJP governments at the Centre and Chhattisgarh to secure an early release for the nuns.
'Both the Congress and the CPI(M) wanted the nuns to remain in jail to ensure that the emotive issue festers and retards the BJP's bourgeoning acceptance among Christians in Kerala,' he added.
Mr. George said the Vatican Council in 1964 had ruled against forced conversion. 'In contrast, if Tipu Sultan's expeditionary forays had not halted at Kodungalloor 200 years ago, Kerala's social matrix would have been different,' he added.
Mr. George attacked the Congress and CPI(M) for seeking the support of the Jamaat-e-Islami and the People's Democratic Party (PDP) respectively during the recent byelection in the Nilambur Assembly constituency. He said the BJP was with 'patriotic Muslims,' who, he stated, were in the majority.
BJP leader S. Suresh, who is also a State vice-president, said the party would not allow political adversaries to single out State president Rajiv Chandrasekhar for criticism.

EPS slams DMK for halting welfare schemes, vows to revive them

Tenkasi: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Tuesday accused the DMK govt of discontinuing key welfare schemes initiated by the previous AIADMK regime, including the free laptop scheme for government school students and Amma mini clinics, purely for political reasons. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Addressing the public in Tenkasi, Ambasamudram, and Alangulam as part of his Makkalai Kappom, Thamizhagathai Meetpom campaign, EPS said, "Under AIADMK rule, Tamil Nadu topped the country in higher education enrolment. The free laptop scheme helped thousands of rural students access future-ready technology. But the DMK scrapped it after coming to power." He also criticised the DMK for shutting down the Amma mini clinics. "Now the chief minister is holding one-day Nalam Kaakum Stalin medical camps. Is he interested in people's health only now? Amma mini clinics provided daily medical care within 2–3 km for every locality. Why politicise welfare schemes?" he asked, promising to revive both schemes if AIADMK returns to power. EPS further hit out at the DMK for failing to deliver on several 2021 poll promises made to Tenkasi. "Why do you need a CM who cannot keep his word? DMK is now openly admitting it depends on allies to win in 2026. We, the AIADMK and BJP, depend only on people — because for us, people are the true rulers," he said. Earlier in the day, EPS met representatives from people with disabilities, farmers, and merchants in Tirunelveli and Tenkasi. Representatives of the people with disabilities demanded higher monthly assistance, better access to education, and job opportunities. EPS assured them of AIADMK's support, saying, "Differently abled people are pure of heart, and their rightful demands will be fulfilled." MSID:: 123124069 413 |

370 abrogation anniversary: ‘New J&K' for LG, ‘Black Day' for others

SRINAGAR/JAMMU: The sixth anniversary of Article 370's abrogation drew contrasting responses Tuesday with J&K lieutenant-governor Manoj Sinha asserting the move heralded the 'birth of a new Jammu and Kashmir' and most parties, barring BJP, protesting the 'Black Day'. 'On Aug 5, 2019, dismantling of the terror ecosystem began. The new J&K is one where tears are not shed on deaths of terrorists but tears of common Kashmiris are wiped away,' Sinha said at Srinagar's Sheri Kashmir Convention Centre, handing over 158 job letters to kin of civilians killed by terrorists over the years. The Centre-appointed LG painted a picture of robust security and responsive administration after the abrogation of J&K's special status and statehood as well as the region's conversion into a Union Territory, saying the long wait for justice and healing was over for families of terror victims. 'They (job recipients) have come out to reveal the role of Pakistani terrorists and the terror ecosystem in J&K.' Barely 10km from the convention centre where Sinha spoke, the mood was not as bright as the governing National Conference (NC) and opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) decried the abrogation. While the two parties were not permitted to hold public marches, both held protests in their offices. 'This day is a Black Day for us. There should be a restoration of statehood and democratic rights. Even BJP knows it was not a good decision and that's the reason they keep us locked up on this day,' senior NC functionary Salman Sagar said. PDP president and former CM Mehbooba Mufti, also barred from leading a march, echoed the 'Black Day' condemnation. 'J&K has been turned into a laboratory. They subverted the Constitution here and later started similar experiments in other states. You are now seeing the SIR (voter roll revision) exercise in Bihar. I want to tell the people of India their situation could become worse than ours. No one will come to their aid, just like no one is helping us,' Mehbooba said. Peoples Conference chief and MLA Sajad Gani Lone described 'Aug 5 as a brutal reminder of undermining of democracy, an ugly example of selective targeting'. In Jammu, NC, PDP and Congress workers hit the streets. Congress leaders garlanded a statue of the last J&K Dogra ruler Maharaja Hari Singh. Party workers sported black ribbons and raised slogans against the Centre and BJP for delay in restoration of statehood. 'Today's protest is part of our intensified campaign to seek restoration of pride and glory of this historic Dogra state, which was destroyed by BJP on Aug 5, 2019,' J&K Congress working president Raman Bhalla said. Chief party spokesperson Ravinder Sharma accused BJP of undermining the elected NC govt and running the administration through LG Sinha as 'remote control' . If the opposition staged demonstrations, BJP organised celebrations, hailing Aug 5 as a day of 'collective achievement'. J&K BJP chief Sat Sharma told a gathering in Jammu's Akhnoor the abrogation had brought constitutional unity and equal rights. 'This day led to the welfare of neglected and oppressed communities of J&K,' Sharma said.

As local polls loom, Telangana BJP launches ‘Operation Akarsh' to woo BRS leaders

Hyderabad: With local body elections approaching and the Kaleswaram Commission report casting a shadow over the BRS, the BJP has launched a fresh political offensive, 'Operation Akarsh,' aimed at drawing disgruntled BRS leaders into its fold. The first visible shift came on Monday, when former MLA Guvvala Balaraju resigned from the BRS. According to party insiders, several influential leaders from Khammam and Nalgonda districts are now in talks with BJP functionaries and are likely to switch sides soon. The BJP, which has historically underperformed in these districts, sees this as a crucial opportunity to strengthen its base. The timing is key. The BRS is still reeling from back-to-back setbacks — a poor showing in the assembly elections, followed by a big loss in the Lok Sabha polls. In the aftermath, 10 of its MLAs defected to the ruling Congress. Some are already in advanced talks with senior BJP leaders at the district level. Confirming the outreach, Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao told TOI: "Yes, some BRS leaders have approached us. Our focus is to strengthen the party ahead of the local polls. Any decisions will be made after careful evaluation. We cannot name anyone at this stage." With the BRS reduced to just 39 assembly seats and drawing a blank in the Lok Sabha elections, the party is facing internal discontent and a credibility crisis — giving rivals like the BJP a window to make strategic gains ahead of the next round of elections, a senior political analyst said.
