LG Secretariat flags Aadhaar misuse by illegal immigrants, asks Delhi govt to enforce regulations for issuing Aadhar

India Gazette5 days ago
New Delhi [India], July 11 (ANI): The Principal Secretary to the Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has written to the Chief Secretary of the Delhi government asking to enforce strict regulations for issuing Aadhar Cards in the national capital, in the wake of large number of Aadhar cards being procured by illegal immigrants.
In a letter dated July 11, the Principal Secretary highlighted that the illegal immigrants have managed to secure an Aadhaar card on the basis of false documentation or misrepresentation, which, in turn, is adversely impacting local employment.
The letter further noted that illegal immigrants are also getting benefits under the welfare schemes of the Centre and State governments, once they get their Aadhar cards.
The LG secretariat has asked for strict enforcement by Registrars in issuing Aadhar Cards and directed them to switch to in-house model of Aadhar enrollment within two months.
The Chief Secretary has also been asked to provide a comprehensive list of all Aadhar enrollment centres in the national capital by July 15.
The letter reads, 'It has been brought to the attention of Lt. Governor that during the course of Security Review Meetings in several instances illegal immigrants have managed to secure Aadhaar card on the basis of false documentation or misrepresentation. This has a cascading impact wherein such individual are able to secure documents which establish Nationality i.e. Passport and Voter Identity Cards.'
'They also end up availing benefits under Welfare Schemes administered by Central and State Government. Having secured Aadhaar documents, the illegal immigrants secure jobs, depressing local labour markets adversely impacting local employment. This also has wider ramifications for National Security,' it added.
According to the letter, the Delhi government has not complied with UIDAI's directions to shift to an in-house model for Aadhaar enrollment by March 2023.
'Attention is drawn to an Office Memorandum issued by Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) dated 14.10.2022, wherein directions were issued to State Government to shift Registrars/Enrolment Agencies working under outsourced to in-house model by 31st March, 2023. Lt. Governor has expressed concern that this system has not been put in place till date,' the letter reads.
The LG Secretariat has directed to all Registrars to strictly comply with the provisions of the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Regulations, 2016 and switch to an in-house model of Aadhaar enrolment within two months.
The letter said, 'Now, Lt. Governor has directed that clear instructions be issued to all Registrars to strictly comply with the provisions of the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Regulations, 2016 and switch to an in-house model of Aadhaar enrolment within two months. A comprehensive detail of all the enrolment centres set up by the State Government including municipal bodies may be put up alongwith the current mode of functioning latest by 15th July, 2025.' (ANI)

Bihari guest workers in TN left clueless on electoral rollrevision

Amid the furore surrounding the 's special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar, ahead of the assembly election scheduled to take place later this year, the fates of lakhs of guest workers keen on exercising their voting right hangs in the balance. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Under the exercise, around four crore of the eight crore voters in Bihar will have to submit documents proving their citizenship to enumerators by July 25, failing which their names will be excluded from the rolls. Analysts have pointed out that a huge chunk of the electorate comprising illiterate and underserved voters might not have one of the 11 documents that the Commission demands (including domicile and caste certificates) as proof of citizenship, and might not be in a position to furnish them before the deadline. The development has shocked 4.5 lakh people from Bihar in , of which an estimated 2 lakh are in Chennai. They include workers in the construction, hospitality, and logistics industries as well as college students. While the Supreme Court had suggested last week that the EC accept Aadhaar, its own identity card, and ration card as documents for voter re-verification, there seems to be an air of uncertainty regarding the way forward. "Since the announcement, we have been flooded with calls," says Mukesh Kumar Thakur, Secretary of Bihar Association, Chennai, and also Secretary of the Bihar Foundation, Chennai Chapter. "Some people have voter ID cards from Bihar, while their Aadhaar and ration cards have a Chennai address. They're worried that their names might get struck off owing to duplication. We have instructed them to approach their ward members. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now " Many workers are relying on relatives from their native constituencies to send them the necessary forms. Sanjay Kumar Jha, a logistics worker from Ambattur, who has lived in Chennai for 25 years with his family, plans on travelling to Bihar to get his verification done, as his Aadhaar bears a Chennai address, while the voter ID is of Bihar. In a majority of cases, workers have not been intimated about how to proceed with the revision process. Rajdev Kumar, a hotel employee in the city, fears the absence of awareness among guest workers could lead to mass exclusion from the electoral rolls. A similar fear has enveloped guest workers in other parts of TN. "Only a few among the daily wage workers from Bihar are educated, and they might be in a position to provide school or birth certificates. I have been working in Tamil Nadu for 15 years and all I have as proof are my Aadhaar and PAN cards," explained Rajesh Sah, employed at a private factory near Thaneerpandal road, Coimbatore. Others lament that the deadline for furnishing the necessary details is too short. With inputs from Anushka Juliet, Deepak Karthick, Vivanesh Parthiban

Indian delegation in US, Trump says 'we're going to have access' as trade talks progress

Trade talks between the US and India are gaining momentum as President Donald Trump signals progress on a potential trade deal, crediting his tariff policies for opening 'access' to Indian markets read more US President Donald Trump on Tuesday asserted that the country is making notable progress in gaining access to India's markets, attributing the breakthrough to his tough tariff policies and hinting at an outcome toward a coming trade deal. He said that his tariffs have helped the US dismantle barriers that previously hindered American businesses. 'We're going to have access into India,' Trump said, while announcing a trade agreement with Indonesia following a call with President Prabowo Subianto. 'You have to understand, we had no access into any of these countries. Our people couldn't go in. And now we're getting access because of what we're doing with the tariffs.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD #WATCH | US President Donald Trump says, "We made a deal with Indonesia. I spoke to their really great we made the deal. We have full access to Indonesia, everything. As you know, Indonesia is very strong on copper, but we have full access to everything. We will… — ANI (@ANI) July 15, 2025 Although the White House has not released concrete information about the scope or progress of the proposed US-India trade agreement, Trump's comments point to a fresh effort to reshape America's trade ties across Asia. Moreover, a high-level team from the Ministry of Commerce and Trade is also in the US to negotiate further, as India is firm on protecting its dairy and agriculture sector. Trump pointed out that his tough tariff stance is yielding results. 'Now we're getting access,' he repeated, positioning the development as a direct outcome of his trade policies. Donald Trump has frequently insisted that a trade deal with India is almost finalized, though a few outstanding issues remain. Interestingly, experts on US-India relations suggest it's actually beneficial that Trump hasn't yet sent an official letter to New Delhi. Meanwhile, India's trade delegation, headed by chief negotiator Rajesh Agrawal, is in Washington for scheduled talks, fueling renewed hopes for a potential agreement. Among all US trading partners facing Trump's proposed 'reciprocal tariffs,' India is the largest and stands out because, unlike the EU, South Korea, Japan, Canada, and Mexico, it has not received a formal letter from Trump threatening 25 to 35 percent tariffs starting August 1. Assam CM Hemanta Biswa Sarma vows to end 'invasion' by 'one religion'

File photo: Assam CM Hemanta Biswa Sarma (ANI) GUWAHATI: Assam has reclaimed from illegal Muslim settlers 160sq km of forest and other government-owned land, constituting an area larger than size of Chandigarh and almost 75 per cent of Guwahati, in four years of steadfastly "resisting" what CM Himanta Biswa Sarma described on Tuesday as an "invasion". Sarma said BJP government evicting illegal settlers from 1.19 lakh bighas since May 2021 was as much about protecting state's demography as about reclaiming land integral to survival of indigenous tribes and other communities. "All these people who have encroached upon our land are from one religion. Our effort has been to save jati-mati-bheti (identity, land and homesteads)," Sarma said. "There is still a long way to go, as more than 63 lakh bighas are still under encroachment. " The CM's remarks coincided with CPM organising a protest in lower Assam's Goalpara, one of the districts where evictions have taken place. CPM accused BJP government of "working in interest of corporates" & "against citizens". A delegation from Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind (Maulana Mahmood Asad Madani faction) visited Goalpara to help set up shelters for those evicted. In Hahilabil and Ashudubi of Goalpara's Paikan, around 4,000 houses belonging to Bengali-speaking Muslim migrant families were demolished. "Whatever happened in Goalpara was painful. People of our country are being evicted. The government first needs to arrange shelter for them, then other decisions may be taken," Jamiat general secretary Maulana Hakim Uddin Qasimi said. Sarma said state had ordered officials to take steps to remove names of all evicted settlers from electoral rolls.
