Meghalaya govt asks DCs to remain alert to prevent entry of illegal immigrants
The Meghalaya government has asked all DCs to coordinate with police and border security agencies to monitor vulnerable border areas and prevent any unauthorised entry, the official said.
The directive issued by Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Shakil P Ahamed stated: 'In view of the ongoing eviction drive against illegal immigrants undertaken by the Government of Assam and to prevent possible influx of the displaced individuals to the state as a consequence, all deputy commissioners are hereby directed to keep vigilant and take necessary measures to ensure the potential influx is kept in check and law and order is maintained." Assam has recently intensified its eviction operations in districts such as Barpeta, Lakhimpur, Hojai and Nagaon, targeting people allegedly encroaching on government and forest lands, many of whom are suspected to be illegal immigrants. Several families have been displaced in the process.
Meanwhile, the Border Security Force (BSF) has also heightened surveillance along the inter-state border. In recent weeks, BSF troops in Meghalaya apprehended several Bangladeshi nationals for entering and travelling without valid documents. PTI JOP RG

She also underlined that the government will continue to rely on increased public capital expenditure as a major tool to drive development. Speaking at a book launch event in New Delhi, Sitharaman said, 'To maintain the growth is the topmost priority. Growth is the topmost, and therefore, it will have an overlap with how you create jobs…', as per news agency PTI. Her comments come at a time when India's economy is projected to grow at 6.5 per cent in FY25, the slowest pace in four years, down from 9.2 per cent growth in FY24. As per PTI, the Reserve Bank of India has trimmed its GDP growth forecast for the current financial year to 6.5 per cent, down from an earlier estimate of 6.7 per cent. The Economic Survey has pegged growth for FY26 in the range of 6.3 per cent to 6.8 per cent. The finance minister highlighted that capital investments by the government will continue to be central to economic momentum. 'Public investments have kept pace. It has been Prime Minister Narendra Modi's clear instruction that we have to have capital expenditure grow and grow significantly,' she said, adding that such investments are a 'primary driver of sustained economic growth'. Sitharaman also said that India must remain relevant globally and aim for a leadership role, especially by reshaping the voice of the Global South. At the same time, balancing domestic economic ambitions within the limits of fiscal responsibility is also a key area of focus, she noted. She further pointed to the government's efforts to attract more foreign investments, stressing the importance of a favourable FDI regime and highlighting the healthy competition among Indian states in luring global investors. On trade, Sitharaman indicated a shift towards bilateral deals over multilateral arrangements. 'We have seen bilateral agreements being signed in the last four to five years with Australia, UAE and the UK. Negotiations are progressing well with the United States as well as the European Union,' she said, as per PTI. Speaking on India's relations with China, she said that there were initial signs of improvement following external affairs minister S Jaishankar's recent visit. 'There is something, some kind of a beginning… how far it will go is something we will have to wait and see,' she remarked, while also stressing the need for 'a sense of caution'. Three Spectators Dead In Motor Rally Accident In France

Three spectators lost their lives in central France on Saturday when a car driven by a 22-year-old woman racer veered off the road during an auto rally, authorities reported. The driver of the modified Peugeot 208 and her 51-year-old female co-driver were hospitalized, but their lives are not in danger, according to prosecutors. The incident occurred near the town of Ambert in central France at approximately 11 am (0900 GMT) on Saturday. Two men died on the spot, and prosecutors later announced that a third man, who was airlifted to the hospital, succumbed to his injuries. The deceased were identified as two brothers, aged 70 and 60, and a 44-year-old man, according to the public prosecutor's office, which has launched an investigation into involuntary manslaughter. Want Bengal govt to respond to Centres queries on Aparajita Bill: Guv
Kolkata, Jul 26 (PTI) A day after he sent the Aparajita Bill back to the West Bengal government, Governor CV Ananda Bose on Saturday said that he wanted the state administration to respond to the Centre's objections to the legislation. He also said the Bill was larger in its context and content, and thus required an examination from the President. The West Bengal assembly had unanimously passed the Aparajita Women and Child (West Bengal Criminal Laws Amendment) Bill nearly a month after the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024. 'The Aparajita Bill was larger in its context and content. Therefore, I thought that it was something that required the examination of the President of India. Now, the Government of India (GoI) has raised certain queries, which I have asked the state government to answer. I want the state government to be fully involved in this," he said. Bose sent the Aparajita Bill back to the state government for consideration of the serious objections raised by the Centre over the proposed changes to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita that the legislation seeks, a Raj Bhavan source had said on Friday. According to the source, the Centre, in its observation, found that the Aparajita Women and Child (West Bengal Criminal Laws Amendment) Bill, passed in the assembly in September 2024, seeks changes in punishment for rape under multiple sections of the BNS that are 'excessively harsh and disproportionate", the source had said. The Bill proposes enhancement of punishment for rape from the existing minimum of 10 years under the BNS to life imprisonment for the remainder of one's life or death. 'There are three options before a governor. First is to give ascent to the Bill. Many Bills I had given ascent because these were very good in every respect, Constitutional within the law of the land. 'The second option is that the Bill can be sent back to the Assembly for reconsideration with certain suggestions, or without suggestions. Once passed by the Assembly, the Bill comes back to the Governor, and he has to give assent to the Bill. The third option is to refer it to the President of India," Bose told reporters at the Raj Bhavan here. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had 'flagged multiple provisions in the Bill as problematic", the source had said. 'After taking note of the MHA observation, the Governor has referred those for appropriate consideration to the state government," the source added.
