The incident occurred on platforms 7/8, where Amit Kumar Patel, a mechanical helper in the Carriage and Wagon (C\&W) department of North Central Railway, was on duty. Police said a man, suspected to be mentally unwell, arrived from the outer side of the platform and suddenly struck Patel on the head and face, killing him on the spot.
RPF constable Madhav Singh Yadav, who attempted to intervene, was also attacked and sustained serious head injuries. He boarded the Bundelkhand Express to seek help but got down at Naini station due to heavy bleeding and was later admitted to a hospital. Singh is posted in Jhansi and was on postal duty in Prayagraj on Wednesday, officials said.
As panic spread among passengers, some tried to catch the attacker. According to reports, the man fled and jumped in front of the Purva Express, resulting in his death.
Senior officials of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and began examining CCTV footage as part of the investigation. Superintendent of police (GRP) Prashant Verma also visited the junction late in the night. RPF inspector Rajiv Ranjan Upadhyay said the body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem examination.
In connection with the killing of Amit Kumar Patel, senior PRO of North Central Railway (NCR), Amit Kumar Malviya, said the family of the deceased would be provided immediate financial assistance of ₹25,000, followed by ₹24.75 lakh. He added that under the dying-in-harness rules, a family member would also be given a job in the railways.

Tirupati: The Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Tirupati jointly arrested a fraudster on Sunday who had been cunningly deceiving train passengers by exploiting their trust and misusing their mobile phones for financial fraud. The accused, identified as Venu Babu from Ongole, was apprehended following a coordinated operation by the GRP and RPF teams. He had been targeting unsuspecting passengers by purchasing regular train tickets and blending in with fellow travellers. Through friendly and casual conversations during the journey, he would earn the trust of co-passengers before requesting their mobile phones under the pretext of needing to contact his relatives or friends. Once in possession of the victim's phone, Babu would covertly access mobile payment applications like PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm to transfer funds to bank accounts of his choice. The victims remained unaware of the fraudulent transactions until much later. During interrogation, Venu Babu confessed to a similar crime committed in October 2024 at Tirupati Railway Station, where he duped a passenger and fraudulently transferred Rs 87,000. Following diligent investigation, the authorities managed to recover the entire defrauded amount from the accused. Legal proceedings against him are currently underway. The GRP and RPF have urged passengers to remain cautious during train journeys. They specifically advised travellers not to hand over their mobile phones to strangers and to refrain from accepting food items or any goods from unknown individuals. Commending the swift action of the security forces, the Railway Department lauded the efforts of Dharmendra and Ramakrishna Reddy of the RPF, along with their teams, under the leadership of RPF Inspector Sandeep Kumar and GRP Inspector Aasirvadam.

18 kids found begging with adults rescued in one day
Ludhiana: Eighteen children found begging with adults were rescued by a committee formed by deputy commissioner Himanshu Jain during raids at key locations in the city Sunday. The initiative, part of Project Jeevanjot-2, aims to verify familial relationships through DNA testing to curb child trafficking and exploitation for begging. The raids targeted high-traffic areas, including the railway station, bus stand, and Chaura Bazar, an official statement by the district administration said. The operation was led by district child protection officer Rashmi Saini, along with Ludhiana city police, RPF, representatives from NGOs Childline, and Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA). Saini warned that adults found forcing children, not related to them, to beg will face strict legal consequences. Their DNA tests will be conducted, and during the 15-20 day waiting period for the results, the rescued children will be kept in govt-run childcare home, Doraha. The DNA tests will be carried out at the Civil Hospital from Monday, she added.
