It is time to unfurl the 'Mission Accomplished' banner at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Paramount Global, the parent of CBS Television, has agreed to pay $16m to settle a lawsuit brought by Donald Trump over the editing of a 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris. Presumably, the FCC can now cease its slow-walking of the Paramount-Skydance Media merger.
Just two days after the president took office, the agency's new chair, Brendan Carr, inserted the FCC into the issues in the Trump lawsuit that alleged 'news distortion'. As the New York Post headlined: 'Trump's FCC pick Brendan Carr says '60 Minutes' editing scandal could affect Paramount-Skydance merger review.'
That lawsuit was filed in the final week of the 2024 presidential campaign under the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act, a statute historically used against false advertising. The case was filed in a single-judge federal district court that one legal publication characterized as 'a favored jurisdiction for conservative legal causes and plaintiffs'. CBS characterized the case as 'without merit'.
The 60 Minutes broadcast aired in October; the day before, a different excerpt had appeared on Face the Nation. Soon after, the Center for American Rights – a group that describes itself as 'a public interest law firm dedicated to protecting Americans' most fundamental constitutional rights' – filed a complaint at the FCC alleging CBS had engaged in 'significant and substantial news alteration'. The complaint was dismissed as seeking 'to weaponize the licensing authority of the FCC in a way that is fundamentally at odds with the First Amendment'. Immediately upon becoming the FCC chair, Carr reversed that decision and ordered a formal proceeding on the matter (but let stand the dismissal of a complaint against a local Fox station over its 2020 election coverage).
The election of Trump and the installation of a Trump-appointed FCC chair transformed the Paramount/CBS merger from a review of the public interest merits of the transfer of broadcast licenses into a broader question that included the 60 Minutes editing. Carr told an interviewer: 'I'm pretty confident that the news distortion complaint over the 60 Minutes transcript is something that is likely to arise in the context of the FCC review of that transaction.'
The formal paperwork for FCC approval of the license transfers was submitted 10 months ago, on 6 September 2024. Now that the lawsuit has been settled, it will be interesting to see how quickly the FCC acts.
The CBS case is just one example of the tactical leverage the Trump FCC regularly exerts over those it regulates. Carr, who wrote the FCC chapter in the 'Project 2025' Maga blueprint, has not been shy about using this authority to achieve such political goals.
Even before formally assuming the FCC chair position, Carr began exercising chair-like authority to advance the Maga agenda. This began with a letter to the CEOs of Alphabet (Google and YouTube), Meta (Facebook and Instagram), Microsoft and Apple alleging: 'you participated in a censorship cartel … [that is] an affront to Americans' constitutional freedoms and must be completely dismantled.' Going beyond traditional FCC authority, he threatened: 'As you know, Big Tech's prized liability shield, Section 230, is codified in the Communications Act, which the FCC administers.' Carr suggested he might investigate whether those editorial decisions were made in good faith.
Recently, Carr conditioned the approval of Verizon's acquisition of Frontier Communications on Verizon agreeing to drop its corporate diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies. Continuing his anti-diversity efforts, he launched an investigation into Comcast Corporation because it promotes DEI as 'a core value of our business'.
In his pre-FCC chair days, Carr championed press freedom. In a 2021 statement, he wrote: 'A newsroom's decision about what stories to cover and how to frame them should be beyond the reach of any government official.' Once he became Trump's FCC chair, however, he not only picked up on the 60 Minutes matter, but also launched an investigation into the public broadcasters NPR and PBS 'regarding the airing of … programming across your broadcast member stations'.
The FCC's regulatory authority directly covers about one-sixth of the American economy while also affecting the other five-sixths that rely on the nation's communications networks. What was once an independent, policy-based agency has been transformed into a performance-based agency, using any leverage it can discover or invent to further the Trump Maga message.

Bessent's comments come as the administration is set to hit many U.S. trading partners this month with 'reciprocal' tariffs following the end of a 90-day pause. During that period, the White House discussed the types of trade agreements Donald Trump and his team were set to negotiate with China, the U.K., Canada, and dozens of other countries, which the president has accused of engaging in unfair trade practices. The majority of those deals did not materialize, except for a handful of exceptions. Many issues continue to divide U.S. and Chinese officials, but some export controls instituted by Beijing were lifted after an agreement was inked in late June. On Sunday, Bessent echoed a familiar line from the administration: the insistence that the tariffs Trump was imposing in the absence of formal agreements with foreign governments constituted the 'deals' promised by the White House. 'The president has a reputation, a self-described dealmaker, so why haven't we seen the kind of deals that he promised in the last 90 days?' asked CNN's Dana Bash. "Again, he didn't promise this,' countered Bessent. In reality, it was Trump's trade adviser, Peter Navarro, who set this goal during a Fox Business interview. 'And when we send out the 100 letters to these countries, that will set their tariff rate. So we're going to have 100 done in the next few days,' he continued. Bash responded: 'But that's not a deal. That's a threat.' 'No, that's the level,' said the Treasury secretary. 'That's the deal.' 'President Trump's going to be sending letters to some of our trading partners saying that if you don't move things along, then on August 1st, you will boomerang back to your April 2nd tariff level.' The White House initially announced a slate of 'Liberation Day' tariffs in early April, setting individualized tariff rates for dozens of U.S. trading partners, including some as high as 50 percent. Markets immediately engaged in a sell-off, prompting panic and a reversal by the president. But the end of Trump's 90-day pause is fast approaching, with the official deadline on Wednesday, July 9. So far, administration officials have not indicated that another pause is likely. Administration officials are currently negotiating with the EU, which is among the U.S. trading partners still seeking to avert a massive tariff hike. Before the president was re-elected, the average tariff on goods from the EU imported to the U.S. was just 2 percent. Trump has threatened to mark up tariffs as high as 50 percent. Holger Schmieding, chief economist at Germany's Berenberg bank, said the most likely outcome of the trade talks is that 'the US will agree to deals in which it takes back its worst threats of 'retaliatory' tariffs well beyond 10 percent'. Bessent's support of tariffs was one of several issues that led to his conflict with Elon Musk, the Tesla CEO and former DOGE overlord who joined the administration as a temporary appointee in January. The two argued frequently and even had one physical confrontation, according to news reports, and emerged as sharp personal rivals in addition to being political foes. On Sunday, the Treasury secretary made it clear that there was no love lost between the two men after Musk, who left the administration in May, publicly blew up at the president in a series of Twitter posts about a legislative package Trump had endorsed — the 'big, beautiful bill.' Musk was, and still is, a furious critic of the bill's deficit spending, which is projected to add trillions to the national debt over 10 years, and threatened last week to fund primary challenges against Republicans who voted for the legislation. His threats did not work, and it passed with only a few Republicans dissenting. 'The principles of DOGE were very popular. I think, if you looked at the polling, Elon was not,' Bessent told CNN.

The rollercoaster of a relationship between the world's richest man, Elon Musk, and President Donald Trump has captivated the attention of many political observers over the last year — but Musk's latest move could be his boldest yet. Musk officially filed a Statement of Organization Sunday with the Federal Election Commission for his 'America Party' after weeks of threatening the GOP. On July 4th, Musk asked his 221.7 million followers on X if it was time to make good on his threats to create a new political party and oust the Republicans who supported Trump's signature budget bill. The bill narrowly passed through Congress after weeks of debate and different GOP factions plotting to tank the legislation at various points in the process. Republicans currently hold slim majorities in both the House and Senate, with just a handful of seats giving them the edge over Democrats. Out of 100 seats in the U.S. Senate, 53 are held by Republicans. In the House, 220 seats are held by Republicans, 212 by Democrats, and three are presently vacant due to member deaths. Trump's budget bill passed with narrow margins in both chambers last week, with some members of the President's party voting against it. Musk and Trump got into a social media war during debate on the legislation, leading to Musk threatening to use his billions to start a third party and Trump threatening to deport the naturalized American citizen. Last Monday, before the bill even passed, Musk escalated his attacks, saying lawmakers who campaigned on cutting spending but supported the bill 'should hang their heads in shame.' He added, 'And they will lose their primary next year if it's the last thing I do on this Earth.' Musk, now worth over $400 billion, founded the AmericaPAC super PAC in 2024. AmericaPAC raised more than $260 million last year, much of it to back Republicans in swing districts. Over $88 million went to supporting Trump directly. Despite the unpopularity of national third-party or independent presidential campaigns, state-level races tell a different story. Two current U.S. Senators are Independents who caucus with Democrats, and dozens of independents have served in the Senate throughout history. Musk was notably quiet immediately after the budget bill passed but weighed in on July 4th with a cryptic post: 'Great day for some … fireworks,' with two fire emojis. He praised Senators Rand Paul and Rep. Thomas Massie, both of Kentucky, for voting against the bill, posting a '100' emoji in support. He previously threatened to primary any GOP lawmaker who voted in favor. Some, like Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.), brushed off the threat, calling Musk a 'true patriot' and praising his past government service under Trump. Still, Musk has called out Freedom Caucus members who supported the bill. 'How can you call yourself the Freedom Caucus if you vote for a Debt Slavery bill with the biggest debt ceiling increase in history?' he wrote, tagging two GOP lawmakers. Meanwhile, other Republicans downplayed Musk's political ambitions, while some Trump allies struck back. Investor James Fishback, whose ETF avoids DEI-focused firms, pulled his Tesla-themed fund in response to Musk's party launch. It remains to be seen whether Musk's opposition to Trump-aligned Republicans is a one-off—or a sign he's serious about reshaping the GOP from the outside.
