Perak kicks off football revival from the ground up

BATU GAJAH: Perak will prioritise grassroots football development in a bid to revive the sport's former glory in the state.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said this approach was being adopted as attempts to turn football into a commercial venture had not delivered the desired outcomes, unlike in some other countries.
He said that although football team privatisation had been pursued in the hope that private sector investment would drive profit-oriented growth, it had proven unsustainable.
"In Malaysia, including in Perak, we have been unable to replicate the model seen in countries like the United Kingdom, where football functions not only as a sport but as a major business," he said.
"We had hoped that private companies, such as XOX, would fund Perak FC, but in the end, they could not sustain the commitment. This isn't unique to Perak — most states face similar challenges, with the exception of Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT)," he added.
Saarani was speaking at a press conference after attending the Meet the Customer Day event at Dewan Bandaran Kinta here today.
It was recently reported that Perak FC had suspended all operations with immediate effect due to financial difficulties.
In a statement, the club's management confirmed that foreign players had been released and remaining funds used to pay staff and local players.
Saarani said the state would now return to the traditional football development model beginning at school level. Discussions have already been held with Perak Football Association (PAFA) president Datuk Mohd Azhar Jamaluddin.
"In the past, we identified talent through school competitions via the Perak School Sports Council (MSSPk), starting from district level up to the state level. That was how we unearthed promising players," he said.
"If we want Perak football to thrive again, we need to rebuild from that foundation."
He also attributed the lack of new talent to the limited opportunities available to local players in the Super League, which increasingly favours foreign players.
"At the moment, only JDT are managing to stay competitive. States such as Kedah, Perlis, Pahang, and even Perak are struggling.
"With the Super League allowing foreign players, local talent is being sidelined. Yet the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) still relies on Malaysian players for the national team. Without grassroots development, where will those players come from?" he said.
Saarani affirmed that the state would continue supporting football development through participation in tournaments such as the Malaysia Games (Sukma) and other state-level championships.

Indonesian oil tycoon sought in graft probe reportedly in Malaysia

PETALING JAYA: Indonesian authorities believe oil tycoon Riza Chalid, a suspect in a major fuel import corruption case, is currently in Malaysia, as efforts intensify to track down his whereabouts. Accoring to a Tempo magazine's report, Indonesia's immigration directorate general, under the Law and Human Rights Ministry, said it is working closely with its Malaysian counterparts to confirm Riza's location. Acting immigration director-general Yuldi Yusman confirmed that Riza had left Indonesia and had yet to return. "His whereabouts are suspected to be in Malaysia at the moment," he was quoted as saying. According to immigration records, Riza has been in Malaysia since Feb 6, following his departure from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. Riza was recently named as a suspect in a corruption investigation involving fuel imports by subsidiaries of Pertamina, Indonesia's state-owned oil and gas company. The scandal has reportedly caused losses amounting to trillions of rupiah. Authorities said there was sufficient evidence to implicate the businessman, with the probe so far leading to the arrest of seven individuals, among them Riza's son, Kerry Adrianto. Earlier, Abdul Qohar, Director of Investigation at the Indonesian Attorney-General's Office, had suggested that Riza might be in Singapore. However, Yuldi confirmed on Monday that Riza is no longer believed to be there. Riza remains on Indonesia's wanted list as authorities pursue cross-border cooperation to bring him to justice.

Boeing opens KL office to support Malaysia's aerospace aspirations

KUALA LUMPUR: Boeing's new office in the heart of Kuala Lumpur will serve as a pivotal hub to strengthen the aerospace company's customer support, aviation safety, sustainability and supply chain in Malaysia, according to its president, Penny Burtt. In a statement today, she said the company is honoured to support the nation's vision of becoming a key aerospace node in the region as outlined in the country's Aerospace Blueprint 2030, noting that Malaysia is home to one of the largest aviation markets in Asia-Pacific "The opening of Boeing's new expanded corporate office in Kuala Lumpur reflects our deep commitment to the Malaysian government, our employees, customers and partners in the country," she said. The opening ceremony of the aviation giant's corporate office in Menara Hap Seng 3 here today was officiated by the Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) Liew Chin Tong, United States Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard D. Kagan and National Aerospace Industry Coordinating Office (NAICO) chief executive officer Shamsul Kamar Abu Samah. In his opening remarks, Liew said the new office is a testament to Boeing's commitment to Malaysia as a part of the nation's aerospace journey. "Boeing's journey with Malaysia spans over 70 years, beginning with the delivery of the Douglas DC-3 aircraft in 1947. "Since then, Boeing has played an important role in supporting our aviation and aerospace growth," he said. Liew added that to date, more than 140 Boeing aircraft have been delivered to Malaysian carriers, including over 100 Boeing 737s to Malaysia Airlines. "The Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) has also announced its intention to purchase 30 Boeing 737 MAX 8s and an option to procure 30 more. "This provides Boeing and Malaysia the opportunity to collaborate on the next phase of aerospace development, from local supply chain expansion to talent upskilling and sustainability leadership," he said. The New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030) lists aerospace as a priority sector to drive innovation, deepen economic complexity, and achieve net-zero ambitions. The initiatives for the aerospace industry under NIMP 2030 are spearheaded by the National Aerospace Industry Corporation Malaysia, the key implementing agency. Liew noted that Boeing's presence in Malaysia goes beyond aircraft sales, as the company has also set up its sole wholly owned manufacturing facility in Southeast Asia in Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah. "With a workforce of nearly 1,000 Malaysians, the Boeing Composites Malaysia has an impeccable record in producing composite parts for the 737, 767, 777, and 787 programmes-contributing directly to Boeing's global production network," he added. - Bernama
