How India and Pakistan can play each other thrice at Asia Cup 2025: Format sets up path for potential hat-trick

Arch-rivals India and Pakistan could face off as many as three times in the 2025 Asia Cup. The Asian Cricket Council's (ACC) chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, confirmed that the men's tournament will be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 9 to 28, with the schedule being announced on Saturday. The event, being played in the T20 format, will serve as a key build-up to the T20 World Cup next year in India and Sri Lanka. Indian players celebrate their victory at the end of the Asia Cup 2023 super four match against Pakistan(AFP) India and Pakistan will first meet in a marquee group stage fixture on Sunday, September 14. The two sides are placed in Group A alongside UAE and Oman and are expected to face each other again in the Super Four stage on the following Sunday, September 21. Should both teams qualify for the final, a third clash would be on the cards, bringing one of cricket's fiercest rivalries to fans three times in under three weeks. Interestingly, the arch-rivals haven't squared off in the final of the continental tournament yet. India will begin their campaign against the UAE on September 10 and are expected to play all their matches in Dubai. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Hong Kong form Group B. The 19-match tournament will be hosted across two venues, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, with each team allowed to fly with 17-member squads. Announcing the dates on social media, ACC chairman and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi said: 'I am delighted to confirm the dates of the ACC Men's Asia Cup 2025 in UAE. The prestigious tournament will take place from September 9th to 28th. We look to a spectacular display of cricket. Detailed schedule will be out soon.' ACC meeting held on July 24 The ACC had finalised UAE as the venue during a meeting held on July 24, which was attended by all 25 member nations. Although the BCCI is the official host for this edition, the tournament is being staged in the UAE following a mutual agreement between India and Pakistan to only play each other at neutral venues until at least 2027 due to the ongoing cross-border tensions. According to PTI, as part of ACC's existing arrangement with the tournament broadcasters, India and Pakistan are always clubbed in the same group to guarantee at least two meetings. The structure also keeps the door open for a blockbuster final, should both teams make it through.

'When Shubman Gill scored 269, it was all like, who is Virat Kohli? Who is Rohit Sharma?': Nasser's ruthless swipe

Shubman Gill's maiden series as India captain is quickly turning into a trial by fire, with criticism mounting over his on-field decisions. While Gill made an excellent start to the series with the bat, scoring two centuries and a double ton across his first four innings, his outings – both as batter and captain – have taken a hit over the past two matches. India's captain Shubman Gill (L) leads his team off the field at the end of the first innings on day four of the fourth cricket test match between England and India at Old Trafford, in Manchester(AFP) Gill's decision-making has been under the scanner, particularly in the fourth Test, where his decisions with bowling rotations were criticised by many former cricketers. A major flashpoint has been his handling of Washington Sundar, who was left underutilized despite conditions that clearly warranted his early introduction. In a Test where spin played a defining role, Sundar wasn't introduced into the attack until the 60th over mark, despite the spin-bowling all-rounder picking a four-fer during the second innings in the Lord's Test. With Gill facing significant flak, former English captain Nasser Hussain – who was among the ones critical of Gill's decision surrounding Sundar's introduction into the attack – had some advice for the young captain. Nasser insisted that the public opinions can be fickle, and that Gill should switch off from social media and focus on his captaincy. 'Especially as a young Indian captain… there's no middle ground. When he was getting 260-odd at Edgbaston and winning the Test match, it was all like, 'who is Virat Kohli? Who is Rohit Sharma? We have moved on'. Then you have a couple of bad games, the series starts going away from you, then every decision is picked on,' Nasser told Sky Sports Cricket. 'The key to it is to stay off social media. You are a young learning captain. Learn from this experience. If you are a batter or a bowler, you are not an end product at the start. It's the same with captaincy,' said the former England skipper further. Sundar showed what India missed soon after he was introduced into the attack, taking two quick wickets. However, England, who had already been in a strong position by the time Sundar came on, capitalised on their solid foundation and posted a mammoth score of 669 in the first innings. England lead by 311 Thanks to the centuries from Joe Root (150) and Ben Stokes (141), as well as fifties from openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, England dominated the Indian bowling attack, which lacked the sharpness for most of the innings. The hosts are now in a prime position to take an unassailable series lead in Manchester, with India requiring an extraordinary effort from their batting unit to salvage a favourable result.

Euro 2025: Spains style vs. Englands will to win sets up fascinating final

Basel (Switzerland), Jul 26 (AP) A title game between defending champion England and World Cup winner Spain is the Women's European Championship final that many wanted. How they got to Basel on Sunday is a whole other story. Spain has mostly cruised through its five games except for a late scare in a tense semifinal against Germany. England has trailed for long periods of three games and survived being on the brink of elimination in both knockout games. Spain is a supremely technical team with a dream midfield pairing two-time Ballon d'Or winners Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmatí. England has incredible will to win and has called a pair of dramatic game-changers off the bench, Michelle Agyemang and Chloe Kelly. 'We always have the confidence that in terms of positioning and having possession, we tend to be very precise and it's difficult to take the ball off us," Putellas said. 'So we're ready for anything.? It looks like an ideal final of contrasting styles. One made possible only because England's humbling opening 2-1 loss to France ultimately kept the title holder out of Spain's side of the knockout bracket. Leaders and trailersFour vs. 219. That's the number of minutes Spain has trailed at Euro 2025 games compared to England. Spain fell behind between the 10th and 14th minutes of a group-stage game against Italy when some starters were rested because the team was likely to finish top. England gave up two first-half goals against France in their group, again to Sweden in the quarterfinals and one more to Italy in the semifinals. England's equalizing goals by Agyemang in the knockout games came in, respectively, the 81st and then the sixth minute of stoppage time. 'I think we've nearly killed her twice this tournament!" England's Ella Toone said of coach Sarina Wiegman. 'She says we've definitely aged her." Spain midfielder Patri Guijarro said of England's resolve: ?There's no fragility. And I think that above all, their competitiveness, is what has got them this far. But what they're doing is not easy.? Trading winsSpain and England each beat the other when winning their recent titles, and they traded wins in a UEFA Nations League group this year. England eliminated Spain 2-1 after extra time in the quarterfinals of its home Euro 2022. Does this sound familiar? England trailed into the 84th that day before two substitutes — Alessia Russo and Toone — assisted and scored to force extra time. Spain got a deserved 1-0 win in the 2023 World Cup final played in Sydney, Australia. Spain is now on a run of 13 wins in 14 games and the blip was a 1-0 loss to England at Wembley in February. Spain won the return game 2-1 on June 3, rallying with two Clàudia Pina goals in the second half. Winning women coachesFor the eighth straight edition, the title-winning coach will be a woman. England's Wiegman and Spain's Montse Tomé were in a minority of seven female head coaches with the 16 teams that started in Euro 2025. They are the last coaches standing to extend a winning run started in 1997. Wiegman won the past two, with England in 2022 and her native Netherlands in 2017. Germany coaches Silvia Neid and Tina Theune won the previous five. Spain never reached the final in 13 previous editions since 1984. Penalty shootoutsThat first final 41 years ago is the only one decided by a penalty shootout. Sweden beat England in a rain-soaked, near-empty stadium in Luton after a two-leg final ended 1-1. The scorer of Sweden's decisive penalty, and its goal in the first leg, was Pia Sundhage, who coached Switzerland to the quarterfinals here, losing 2-0 to Spain. England's second shootout in Women's Euros history also was against Sweden, last week in the quarterfinals. A madcap affair saw only five of 14 spot kicks scored and Sweden fail twice when scoring would have sent England home. Spain was involved in just one Women's Euros shootout, losing to Austria in the 2017 quarterfinals.
