
World gears up from digital to quantum economy shift: India's cyber agency
The data compiled by India's national cyber agency. in collaboration with global cybersecurity firm SISA, highlights how quantum computing is no longer a futuristic idea but a fast-approaching reality with deep implications for cybersecurity and digital infrastructure.
Titled 'Transitioning to Quantum Cyber Readiness', the report points out that quantum computers, which work using the principles of quantum mechanics, are now moving out of research labs into real-world use.
Several global tech companies have already made significant progress. Google's Willow chip, launched in December 2024, achieved a breakthrough in error correction with 105 qubits.
Microsoft introduced its Majorana-1 processor in February 2025, with a vision to scale up to a million qubits.
IBM aims to build fault-tolerant quantum systems by 2029, and Quantinuum has built a 56-qubit trapped-ion quantum computer with record-breaking precision.
Even Nokia is pushing forward in the area of quantum networking, as per the report.
The report comes at a time when the United Nations has declared 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, showing how seriously the global community is taking this shift.
The ecosystem around quantum computing -- from semiconductors to system software -- is growing rapidly.
While the potential of quantum computing is enormous, it also comes with serious cybersecurity risks, the report noted.
Quantum computers can solve complex problems much faster than today's machines, which also means they can break current encryption methods.
Encryption algorithms like RSA, which are widely used for securing financial transactions, messaging apps, digital signatures, and even blockchain systems, could be easily cracked.
This could lead to massive data breaches and threaten the very backbone of the digital economy.
The report warns of a particularly dangerous threat: "harvest now, decrypt later" attacks.
In these cases, cybercriminals collect encrypted data today and wait until quantum computers can decrypt it in the future.
Such vulnerabilities put financial data, health records, secure communications, and cryptocurrencies at serious risk.
Another challenge, according to the report, is that many organisations still do not have clear visibility into their current cryptographic systems.
In a future that demands post-quantum cryptography, these blind spots could be disastrous.

Earlier, the company had signed two deals for sourcing around 75 MW renewable energy from Ampin. The additional capacity will be delivered to Nxtra in two phases, each through captive solar-wind power projects in Rajasthan and Karnataka, respectively, the statement said. Ampin has been supplying solar power to Nxtra through intra-state, open access in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Odisha. With this new agreement, AMPIN will add 11 new states as well as new technologies such as large-scale ISTS renewable energy supply and the seamless supply of renewable energy from a single Independent Power Producer (IPP). "With this partnership, we demonstrate that through a seamless blend of inter-state and intra-state renewable energy solutions backed by a pan-India presence, we can take any customer through a nearly 100 per cent energy transition. "Nxtra by Airtel, a leader in the data and fast-growing data centrespace shares our vision for sustainability and we are proud to make data centres green by this association," Pinaki Bhattacharyya, Founder, MD and CEO, AMPIN Energy Transition, said. Nxtra joined the global RE100 initiative in June 2024, pledging to source 100 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources.

Maximise benefits of `1,000 cr scheme, Centre urges states
Vijayawada: In a major step towards strengthen India's MSME sector and promote sustainable industrial practices, the ministry of power has launched the Assistance in Deploying Energy Efficient Technologies in Industries and Establishments (ADEETIE) scheme, backed by a Rs 1,000-crore Central budget. Launched nationally from Panipat, the scheme is being implemented by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and is designed to fast-track the adoption of advanced energy-efficient technologies in MSMEs—an economic backbone employing millions and driving innovation across sectors. As part of the national rollout, BEE has appealed to all state governments to take immediate and focused action in scaling up implementation of the ADEETIE scheme. States have been urged to engage their State Designated Agencies (SDAs) to proactively educate stakeholders, identify eligible clusters, and provide end-to-end support to MSMEs for seamless technology transition. 'ADEETIE is a big boon to the MSME sector,' said Akash Tripathi, additional secretary, ministry of power and director general, BEE. 'We urge all states to capitalize on this opportunity from the very beginning to ensure the scheme's success and maximize benefits for their industries.' Of the Rs.1,000-crore budget, Rs 875 crore is earmarked as interest subvention to ease access to concessional finance for energy-efficient upgrades, while Rs 50 crore is allocated for implementation and capacity-building. The initiative is expected to leverage total investments of over Rs 9,000 crore, including significant lending by MSMEs themselves. The scheme provides comprehensive support—from Investment Grade Energy Audits (IGEA) and Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) to financing assistance and Monitoring and Verification (M&V)—ensuring measurable energy savings, reduced costs, and enhanced productivity. ADEETIE is operational across 60 industrial clusters and 14 energy-intensive sectors, including textiles, foundries, and food processing, among others. A phased, cluster-specific approach is being adopted to tailor interventions and ensure measurable outcomes. Apart from Kochi, Bhuvneshwar, West Godavari of Andhra Pradesh was selected under ADEETIE Scheme for fisheries. Apart from Ambala, Firozabad, Chirkunda, East and West Godavari of AP have been selected for glass and refractory Sector. The Union government sees this scheme as a pivotal tool not just for post-pandemic recovery, but for long-term sustainability, job creation, and achieving India's climate and net-zero goals. The ministry of power has specially acknowledged the proactive role of states like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, while calling upon all states to rise to the occasion and make ADEETIE a turning point in India's clean industrial growth.
