Study: Melting Glaciers could cause more volcanic eruptions

July 8 (UPI) -- The melting of glaciers due to the climate crisis could make volcanic eruptions more catastrophic than before, scientists cautioned in a study.
The loss of ice from the rapid glacial melting releases pressure on magma chambers underground and could cause volcanic eruptions to become more frequent and intense, the study, presented at the Goldschmidt Conference in Prague, said.
"As glaciers retreat due to climate change, our findings suggest these volcanoes go on to erupt more frequently and more explosively," Lead researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Pablo Moreno, said.
The study placed six volcanoes in Chile under crystal analysis to determine how the shifting of the Patagonia Ice Sheet impacted the strength and frequency of previous volcanic eruptions.
Studies linking the impacts of climate change on volcanic eruptions had previously been conducted in Iceland, but the latest study was the first to assess the links to continental volcanic systems.
"Our study suggests this phenomenon isn't limited to Iceland, where increased volcanic activity has been observed, but could also occur in Antarctica," said Moreno. "Other continental regions, like parts of North America, New Zealand, and Russia, also now warrant closer scientific attention,"
"We found that following deglaciation, the volcano starts to erupt way more, and also changes composition," said Moreno. The composition changed as the magma melted crustal rocks while eruptions were suppressed. This made the molten rock more viscous and more explosive on eruption.
Scientists found that during the last ice age, thick ice covered and suppressed the number of eruptions. Then, as the Earth heated up, volcanic activity increased by two to six times.
"Glaciers tend to suppress the volume of eruptions from the volcanoes beneath them. But as glaciers retreat due to climate change, our findings suggest these volcanoes go on to erupt more frequently and more explosively," said Dr Moreno. "The key requirement for increased explosive is initially having a very thick glacial coverage over a magma chamber, and the trigger point is when these glaciers start to retreat, releasing pressure, which is currently happening in places like Antarctica."

Photo by Thirdman/ Pexels July 9 (UPI) -- A common virus once thought harmless to humans might be linked to Parkinson's disease, a new study says. The germ, Human Pegivirus (HPgV), was found in half the autopsied brains of patients with Parkinson's, but not in any brains from healthy people, researchers reported Tuesday in the journal JCI Insight. "HPgV is a common, symptomless infection previously not known to frequently infect the brain," lead researcher Dr. Igor Koralnik, chief of neuroinfectious diseases and global neurology at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago, said in a news release. "We were surprised to find it in the brains of Parkinson's patients at such high frequency and not in the controls." The virus also appeared to prompt different responses from people's immune systems, depending on their genetics, Koralnik said. "This suggests it could be an environmental factor that interacts with the body in ways we didn't realize before," Koralnik said. "For a virus that was thought to be harmless, these findings suggest it may have important effects, in the context of Parkinson's disease. It may influence how Parkinson's develops, especially in people with certain genetic backgrounds." Parkinson's disease occurs when brain cells that produce an important hormone called dopamine begin to die off or become impaired. As dopamine levels decrease, people develop movement symptoms like shaking or stiffness, as well as problems maintaining balance and coordination. More than 1 million people in the U.S. live with Parkinson's disease, including actors Michael J. Fox and Alan Alda, singer Neil Diamond and football great Brett Favre. About 90,000 new cases are diagnosed every year, researchers said. Most cases of Parkinson's are not linked to a person's genetics, raising the question of what might trigger the death of dopamine-producing nerve cells, researchers said in background notes. For the new study, researchers autopsied the brains of 10 Parkinson's patients and 14 people not suffering from the disorder. The team found HPgV in 5 out of 10 brains from people with Parkinson's, but none of the 14 healthy brains. The virus also was present in the spinal fluid of Parkinson's patients, but not in the control group. Further, more brain damage was found in patients with HPgV, researchers said. Next, researchers tested blood samples from more than 1,000 participants in the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative, a biosample library available for Parkinson's research. HPgV is a blood-borne virus in the same family as hepatitis C. Only about 1% of Parkinson's patients had HPgV in their blood samples, researchers found. But people who had the virus showed different signals from their immune system, particularly those with a Parkinson's-related gene mutation called LRRK2, researchers said. "We plan to look more closely at how genes like LRRK2 affect the body's response to other viral infections to figure out if this is a special effect of HPgV or a broader response to viruses," Koralnik said. Researchers plan to continue tracking how common the virus is among Parkinson's patients, and how it might trigger the brain disorder. "One big question we still need to answer is how often the virus gets into the brains of people with or without Parkinson's," Koralnik said. "We also aim to understand how viruses and genes interact; insights that could reveal how Parkinson's begins and could help guide future therapies." People noshing healthy plant-based foods had a 14% lower risk of Crohn's disease and an 8% lower risk of ulcerative colitis, researchers found. On the other hand, an unhealthy diet containing more animal fats and vegetable oils was associated with a 15% increased risk of Crohn's disease, results show. "Our research indicates that a healthy plant-based diet may protect against inflammatory bowel disease, with its anti-inflammatory properties playing a key role," senior researcher Dr. Zhe Shen of the Zhejiang University School of Medicine in China said in a news release. For the study, researchers tracked more than 143,000 people participating in the UK Biobank, a large-scale health research project among residents of the United Kingdom. As part of the project, patients filled out diet questionnaires. During an average 14.5 years of follow-up, more than 1,000 people developed inflammatory bowel disease, researchers found. Researchers graded participants' diet based on their intake of healthy plant foods, unhealthy plant foods, and animal products. Analysis showed that higher intake of fruits and vegetables accounted for part of the lower risk for Crohn's disease, researchers said. Blood tests from participants indicate that the anti-inflammatory properties of plant-based foods might explain this protection, researchers said. "These findings underscore the beneficial association between healthy plant-based diets and reduced risk of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease," researchers concluded. "They provide important insights for the development of dietary guidelines aimed at preventing IBD." The new study appears in the journal Molecular Nutrition & Food Research. It is the first Big Bang Theory spinoff exclusively for the streaming service. Kevin Sussman returns as Stuart, a comic book shop owner from the original show. Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn and John Ross Bowie also reprise their roles. In the series, Stuart breaks one of physicists Sheldon and Leonard's devices opening a multiverse. Sheldon and Leonard are the characters played by Jim Parsons and Johnny Galecki on The Big Bang Theory. Stuart and girlfriend Denise (Lapkus), geologist Bert (Posehn) and quantum physicist Barry Kripke (Bowie) have to save our original reality. Along the way, the show promises to introduce multiverse incarnation of Big Bang favorites. The spinoff was first announced in 2023. Zak Penn and joins Big Bang creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady writing Stuart. Penn wrote the film adaptation of Ready Player One, Free Guy and two X-Men movies. He is also one of the original writers of Last Action Hero and the 2012 Marvel team-up The Avengers. Big Bang spinoff Young Sheldon aired on CBS. Its own spinoff Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage currently airs on CBS.
