Confused at crossroads?: Take a pause & listen to your inner voice

Time of India15 hours ago
Growing up, previous generations faced limited choices, unlike Gen Z navigating a world of endless possibilities and overwhelming options. While this abundance can lead to confusion, it's a byproduct of opportunity.
When we were growing up, life offered limited choices. Career paths were straightforward. Entertainment had its boundaries. The lucky ones had a TV at home, but even for them, options were few.
At 7.30pm, the only dilemma was whether to watch 'Krishi Darshan', a programme for farmers, or stare at the ceiling. Simpler? Yes. Less overwhelming? Definitely.
Now imagine Gen Z. They're not standing at a simple fork in the road; they're at a full-blown traffic junction with 97 blinking signs. There are thousands of careers, dozens of passions, millions of opinions, and a strange algorithm constantly suggesting what to eat, wear, watch, or even feel.
And ironically, it's the older generation (us), the very people who built this multichoice world, who now say, 'You kids are so confused these days'.
But let's be fair. Options aren't the enemy. Confusion isn't a flaw. It's the byproduct of possibility. Real art lies not in avoiding choices but in learning how to choose wisely. Sometimes, you'll choose the wrong option but that's okay. In fact, it's brilliant. Because failure isn't a detour; it's the actual syllabus.
The jobs you quit, the friendships that faded, the courses you didn't finish — they're all part of your growth chart.
It's not wasted time; it is a character being carved. Just don't hang on to the wrong choices, either by sulking over them or convincing yourself they deserve another chance.
'To be or not to be…' when Shakespeare wrote those lines, he couldn't have imagined an entire generation would ask themselves the same thing 20 times a day.
Having options is a privilege. Indecisiveness is a burden.
So, what should you do when you're stuck at a crossroads?
Take a pause. Step back from scrolling, opinions, and the buzz. Look beyond Instagram filters and viral success stories. Mute the noise for a bit. Listen to that quiet voice inside — the one that doesn't scream but always knows.
Make one decision. Not necessarily a perfect one, just a brave one, and walk that path.
If you stumble, learn from it. Course-correct if needed. Remember, you're not supposed to have it all figured out at 20. Or even at 30. Life isn't a single choice. It's a series of them. Each turn, each mistake, each restart adds up to the story only you can tell. And if you're stuck, start eliminating. Sometimes, clarity doesn't come from choosing.
It comes from crossing things out.
In a lighter vein…The next time you find yourself at a crossroads, don't freeze. Flip a coin, if you must. Not to let chance decide, but to listen to your gut while the coin is in the air.

Cat-astrophic Mistakes First-Time Cat Parents Make

Last Updated: Cats are complex, curious, and incredibly rewarding companions, but they are not plug-and-play pets India's cat craze is catching on fast. According to the industry data, pet cats now make up nearly 9.5% of the country's pet population, with an estimated 3.7 million felines purring their way into urban homes. That is a massive leap from just 2.4 million in 2022, showing how cats are becoming the go-to companions for apartment-dwelling millennials and Gen Z. Meanwhile, dog ownership still dominates at 88%, but the gap is narrowing. What is fuelling this feline fascination? Lower maintenance, quiet companionship, and a temperament that fits snugly into city life. But here is the twist: many new cat parents walk in with a dog-care mindset, expecting their cats to fetch, cuddle on command, or thrive on constant attention. Spoiler: They do not. 'In cities like Mumbai, where space is limited, we are seeing a sharp rise in smaller dogs and especially cats. On our platform, Mumbai now shows an almost equal split between dog and cat parents," shares Dr. Swathi Hareendran, Veterinary Expert, Supertails. To help your cat feel at home and avoid any tail-twitching disasters, Dr Hareendran shares seven surprisingly common mistakes new cat parents make and how to fix them before your kitty gives you the cold shoulder. 1. Assuming Cats Do Not Need Space To Thrive While cats can adapt to compact living far more easily than dogs, that doesn't mean they do not need environmental stimulation. Vertical space (like shelves, window sills, and cat trees) is just as important as square footage. Cats love to perch, climb, and observe their territory from above; it helps them feel secure and mentally engaged. Top Tip: Create multiple elevation zones with soft bedding, scratch posts, and hideaways. Even a small flat can feel like a jungle gym with the right setup. 2. Ignoring Their Sensitivity to Temperature Unlike dogs, cats are highly sensitive to ambient temperature changes. They often gravitate towards sunlit patches, warm corners, or enclosed spaces when they feel cold. On the flip side, in hot Indian summers, poor ventilation or lack of cool zones can lead to lethargy or heat stress. Pro Tip: Ensure your cat has access to both cosy warm spots and well-ventilated, shaded areas, especially in non-air-conditioned homes. 3. Treating Them Like Dogs (No, Really!) Cats are not pack animals. They do not crave validation the way dogs do and tend to form slow, deep bonds on their terms. Trying to train or discipline a cat like a dog (e.g., yelling 'No!" or expecting them to follow commands) can damage trust. Reminder: Respect their boundaries, observe their cues, and reward with calm interaction; affection should be earned, not demanded. 4. Skipping Mental Enrichment A common myth? 'Cats entertain themselves." Not quite. Without interactive play, puzzle toys, or sensory activities, cats can get bored, leading to stress, aggression, or destructive behaviour. Try This: Invest in a feather wand, laser pointer, or puzzle feeder. Even 15–20 minutes of playtime a day can do wonders for their well-being. 5. Underestimating Their Social Needs Advertisement Cats are often thought to be solitary creatures, but many actually thrive on companionship. They may not jump on you like a dog would, but they will show affection in quieter ways: following you around, slow blinking, or curling up nearby. Watch Out: If your cat is hiding constantly, it could be a sign of stress or unmet emotional needs, not just 'independence." 6. Overfeeding and Underplaying Indoor cats are prone to obesity due to limited movement. Combine that with free feeding and lack of play, and you have a purring health hazard. Portion control and daily activity are non-negotiable. 7. Delaying Vet Visits Because 'They Seem Fine' Cats are masters of hiding discomfort. Whether it is a dental issue, joint pain, or gastrointestinal distress, they rarely show visible signs until things get severe. top videos View All Best Practice: Schedule annual wellness checks even if they appear healthy. Preventive care is far easier than emergency care. Cats are complex, curious, and incredibly rewarding companions, but they are not plug-and-play pets. They need a thoughtful balance of respect, routine, and engagement. With a little awareness and a lot of love, you can avoid these beginner blunders and become the confident cat parent your feline deserves. Watch: Indian Man Shocked By New York's Smoke-Spewing Manholes, Labels It "America's Stinkiest City"

An Indian vlogger has ignited a lively debate on social media by sharing a video of New York's streets, showcasing thick, foul-smelling smoke emanating from manholes at a bustling intersection. In the video, Nitish Advitiy showed a typical New York City pedestrian crossing, where thick white smoke suddenly billows out of manholes in the middle of the road. Despite the smoke, pedestrians and cars continue to move about their business, a scene that might be familiar to NYC locals but appears jarring to international visitors. "America's Stinkiest City," the video was captioned on Instagram. Watch the video here: View this post on Instagram A post shared by नितिश अद्वितय (@nitishadvitiy) The video has triggered a mixed bag of responses, with some users finding humour in the situation and others criticising the double standards at play. Others highlighted the perceived hypocrisy, with a few users suggesting that Western nations often unfairly judge developing countries' hygiene issues while ignoring similar problems at home. One user wrote, "OMG I can't believe this is NYC." Another commented, "This is what Western media never shows." A third said, "This looks so yucky." A fourth added, "Please tag this video to the President to show him the mirror." Before this, Mr Advitiy shared another video showcasing life in the US. In an Instagram reel, he expressed his surprise at his neighbours' reaction in the US, after a house in his neighbourhood caught fire. He noted that none of them came out to check on the homeowner affected by the fire or offer any kind of assistance. According to him, the fire department responded promptly, but the neighbours' cold response was striking.
