MEA Warning: 8 Countries Indian Nationals Should Avoid Travelling To

Amid rising global conflicts, political instability, and ongoing civil wars in several regions, India has issued a travel advisory for its citizens, urging caution when visiting countries facing such crises. 1. Yemen Yemen has been in a long-running civil war involving Houthi rebels, government forces, and foreign allies. The country faces daily violence, airstrikes, and a severe humanitarian crisis. The situation is highly unstable, with terrorism, kidnappings, and armed clashes, especially in cities and coastal regions. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has banned Indian nationals from travelling to Yemen by air, land, or sea. The fragile security situation and active conflict make it highly unsafe. Anyone violating this faces action under the Passports Act, 1967, which may include passport cancellation or denial for up to seven years. 2. Cambodia Cambodia has recently seen border clashes with Thailand, especially near the Preah Vihear Temple and surrounding areas. These conflicts have raised security concerns, including possible violence and border shutdowns. While cities like Phnom Penh and Siem Reap remain stable, border areas are unpredictable. The Indian embassy in Cambodia on Saturday issued an advisory asking citizens to avoid the Cambodia-Thailand border areas. 'In view of the ongoing clashes at the Cambodia-Thailand border, Indian nationals are advised to avoid travelling to the border areas," the embassy said in a statement posted on X. The embassy also shared emergency contact information for Indian nationals. 'In case of any emergency, Indian nationals may approach the Embassy of India, Phnom Penh at +855 92881676," it said. While the government has not issued any advisory restricting travel to Thailand, the embassy in Thailand on Saturday advised the Indian citizens in the country to avoid seven Thai provinces – Ubon Ratchathani, Surin, Sisaket, Buriram, Sa Kaeo, Chanthaburi, and Trat. In April 2024, the MEA warned that Indian nationals were being lured to Cambodia with false promises of high-paying jobs, only to fall victim to human trafficking. The government issued an advisory urging citizens to travel for employment only through authorised agents. It also recommended thoroughly verifying the background of prospective employers in Cambodia before accepting any job offers. 3. Myanmar Myanmar is caught in conflict between the ruling military and ethnic armed groups, especially in border states like Rakhine, Chin, and Shan. Airstrikes and clashes have displaced civilians and created a humanitarian crisis. The MEA advises Indians to avoid non-essential travel to Myanmar due to the ongoing conflict. The government advised those already there to remain extremely cautious, steer clear of conflict zones, and stay in touch with the Indian Embassy in Yangon or the Consulate General in Mandalay. 4. Iraq Iraq continues to struggle with terrorism, sectarian violence, and political unrest. While areas like Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region are relatively safer, regions such as Anbar and Nineveh remain high-risk. In the recent advisory, the MEA stated that Indian nationals may consider travelling to the country except for the five Provinces of Iraq, namely Nineveh(Capital Mosul); Salahuddin (Capital Tikrit); Diyala (Capital Baquba); Al-Anbar (Capital Ramadi) and Kirkuk as some parts of these regions remain unsafe. 5. Syria Syria remains gripped by civil war involving government forces, opposition fighters, and terrorist groups like ISIS. Violence, airstrikes, kidnappings, and widespread destruction make the country extremely dangerous. The MEA has strongly advised Indian nationals to avoid travel to Syria and urged those already there to leave immediately and contact the Indian Embassy in Damascus. 6. Libya Libya is still dealing with political divisions, armed conflicts, and militia violence. Travelling within the country is risky due to kidnappings and terror threats, especially by road. The absence of stable governance makes it even more dangerous. Though a complete travel ban was slightly modified on May 23, 2016, the MEA still advises Indians to avoid non-essential travel to Libya. Those already there should stay in touch with the Indian Embassy in Tripoli and avoid inter-provincial travel. advetisement 7. Lebanon Lebanon is facing a political and economic crisis, with added tension from cross-border conflicts involving Israel and Hezbollah. The risk of violence, including airstrikes, is high—especially in southern areas and near the Syrian border. The MEA strongly advises against any non-essential travel to Lebanon for now due to potential threats. The government has urged Indians already in Lebanon to restrict movement and stay in close contact with the Indian Embassy in Beirut. 8. Bangladesh Bangladesh is seeing rising political unrest with violent protests disrupting public life, especially in cities. These disturbances threaten public safety. The MEA has strongly advised Indians against travel to Bangladesh until further notice. The government has urged those in the country to be very cautious, limit travel, and reach out to the Indian High Commission in Dhaka if needed.
