Federal projects in Sabah must follow set schedule

KOTA BELUD: Development projects in Sabah funded by the Federal Government must be implemented according to the set schedule. Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Datuk Ewon Benedick, said this is to ensure that all projects in the pre-implementation phase are initiated by the respective committees involved. Ewon, who serves as co-chairman of the Federal-State Sabah Development Project Monitoring Coordination Intervention Committee together with Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, said the committee is tasked with ensuring that all projects in the pre-implementation category can be initiated. 'Once the projects are handed over to the implementing agencies and contractors, monitoring will continue through other platforms such as the Development Action Committee Meetings,' he said after officiating the Kaamatan Festival celebration and the opening of the Kampung Podos open hall, here. Ewon was commenting on the latest developments in the meeting of the Federal-State Sabah Development Programme and Project Monitoring Coordination Intervention Committee. He said the Special Intervention Meetings, which began earlier this year, have shown positive results. 'Many technical and administrative issues have been resolved more quickly through direct engagement between implementing agencies, ministries and the State Government,' he said. Based on the report presented at the Sabah Federal-State Development Project Monitoring Coordination Meeting last May, the number of projects in pre-implementation status has been reduced from 207 projects to 137 projects. Ewon described the decline as a positive development resulting from collaboration among various parties. 'We have proposed several steps to the technical departments and project-owning ministries to ensure that emerging issues are discussed and resolved promptly. I also hope that the percentage of projects that have commenced will continue to increase at the upcoming meetings,' he said. He expressed appreciation to all ministries, the State Government and the technical departments that have successfully expedited the processes of procurement, contractor appointments and tenders for previously uninitiated projects. The order by Oleksandr Syrskyi comes after a spate of Russian attacks focused attention on lax discipline at military bases as Ukraine struggles to fend off a bigger and better-armed Russian military. Last month Mykhailo Drapatyi resigned as commander of Ukraine's ground forces after a Russian missile strike killed 12 soldiers and wounded scores more at a training ground. "My unconditional demand is to ensure and improve the safety of servicemen in training centres and at rear training grounds," Syrskyi wrote on the Telegram messaging app. "The accumulation of personnel and military equipment, the placement of servicemen in tent camps is prohibited!" As well as organising the construction of new shelters and dugouts, officials are also pursuing "additional engineering solutions", he added. In one recent attack, on May 20, a Russian missile killed six servicemen and wounded at least 10 others at a Ukrainian military shooting range. On June 22, three Ukrainian soldiers were killed and around a dozen wounded after a Russian missile struck a training ground for a mechanised brigade. Announcing his resignation on June 1, Drapatyi, the ex-ground forces commander, said he wanted to set an example for other commanders by quitting. "We will not win this war if we do not build an army where honour is not just a word but a deed," he wrote on Facebook on June 1. "Where responsibility is not punishment, but the foundation of trust." Jeffrey questions Putrajaya over Ambalat deal without consulting Sabah
Jeffrey KOTA KINABALU (July 1): Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey Kitingan is demanding an explanation from the Federal Government over Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's recent statement in Indonesia regarding plans for joint development in the disputed Ambalat maritime area near Sabah's borders. 'Ambalat has already been decided as an area within Sabah's territory. Why was this decision made without consulting Sabah? That is not right. It is another way of bypassing Sabah's rights,' said Jeffrey. Expressing his disappointment, he said Sabah must be consulted on matters involving its territorial rights. 'We need an explanation, and I will submit a question in Parliament regarding Ambalat, specifically to seek clarification from the Prime Minister. We will wait for his response,' he said. On June 27, national news agency Bernama reported that Anwar and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto had reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation, including the potential for joint development in the maritime border area between the two countries. Anwar was quoted as saying that both sides should explore economic cooperation in the maritime zone, including the Ambalat area, for the benefit of their respective populations. 'If there still appears to be a deadlock in negotiations in terms of principles, regulations and laws, then there should be no obstacle for us to accelerate economic cooperation, including what Prabowo mentioned earlier regarding a joint development authority. 'Even in the Ambalat area, if we wait for full resolution, it might take another two decades. So let us take advantage of this moment to achieve results that benefit both countries and defend the interests of our people in a region quite far from the main border,' said Anwar. The Ambalat region, located off the east coast of Sabah and rich in natural resources, has long been a subject of overlapping claims by Malaysia and Indonesia.

Three dead, 35 injured in Ukrainian strike on factory in Russia's Izhevsk, governor says
MOSCOW (Reuters) -Three people were killed and 35 others injured in a Ukrainian drone strike on a factory in the Russian city of Izhevsk, regional governor Alexander Brechalov on his Telegram channel on Tuesday. Brechalov did not name the targeted facility, but a Ukrainian security official earlier told Reuters that at least two long-range drones operated by the Security Service of Ukraine struck the Kupol plant, which manufactures drones and air defenсe systems, and caused a fire. A column of black smoke could be seen billowing into the sky from the site of a fire at a cluster of buildings in videos shared by the Ukrainian official who said the plant's production facilities and warehouses had been hit. Reuters could not independently verify the claim. Brechalov said he had he informed Russian President Vladimir Putin about the incident. Kupol is a research and development enterprise and part of the state-owned Almaz-Antey defense conglomerate. Izhevsk is also home to the world-renowned Kalashnikov defense manufacturing concern.
