Fully use Kannada for administrative work or face action
Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has instructed officials to use Kannada extensively for administrative purposes across all state departments and district administrations, warning that disciplinary action will be taken against those who fail to comply. Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh issued a circular in this regard on Tuesday. 'Despite several circulars issued to administer in Kannada, the Kannada Development Authority has been reporting that the instructions are not being followed. In this context, it has been reiterated that the instructions must be followed compulsorily, and disciplinary action will be taken against those who violate them,' the circular said. It said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, while pointing out that despite instructions for notings on files in government correspondence to be in Kannada, they are not being implemented effectively, has directed that 'if the notes and correspondence in the files are not in Kannada, such files should be returned and an explanation should be sought.' 'It is the duty of all officers and employees to implement the language policy in the administration to the fullest extent and at all levels. Therefore, it is reiterated once again that all officers and employees of the government, corporations, boards, local bodies, universities, and aided organisations should strictly implement the instructions given in the already issued government orders,' it added. The circular further pointed out that during recent Karnataka Development Programme (KDP) meetings, some Deputy Commissioners and Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officers issued agendas and presented departmental information in English, a violation reported by the Kannada Development reminded officials that under the Karnataka Official Language Act, 1963, Kannada is the administrative language of the state. Applications and letters received in Kannada must be replied to in Kannada, and government office nameplates should be displayed in Kannada. The circular reiterated that proceedings of the Legislative Assembly, official correspondence, calling attention notices, and government orders—including those related to appointments, transfers, and leave—must be issued in Kannada.

New Zealand halts Cook Islands funding in stoush over China

It comes as Prime Minister Christopher Luxon tours China on his first official visit . Peters says the Cook Islands didn't consult with New Zealand over the deals to ensure shared interests weren't put at risk. New Zealand this year reviewed its development programme in the Cook Islands ss a result . Peters says the government won't consider significant new funding until the Cook Islands Government takes "concrete steps" to repair the relationship and restore trust. "Funding relies on a high trust bilateral relationship," he said in a statement. He says over the last three years, New Zealand provided nearly 200-million dollars to the Cook Islands through the development programme.

Federal projects in Sabah must follow set schedule

KOTA BELUD: Development projects in Sabah funded by the Federal Government must be implemented according to the set schedule. Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Datuk Ewon Benedick, said this is to ensure that all projects in the pre-implementation phase are initiated by the respective committees involved. Ewon, who serves as co-chairman of the Federal-State Sabah Development Project Monitoring Coordination Intervention Committee together with Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, said the committee is tasked with ensuring that all projects in the pre-implementation category can be initiated. 'Once the projects are handed over to the implementing agencies and contractors, monitoring will continue through other platforms such as the Development Action Committee Meetings,' he said after officiating the Kaamatan Festival celebration and the opening of the Kampung Podos open hall, here. Ewon was commenting on the latest developments in the meeting of the Federal-State Sabah Development Programme and Project Monitoring Coordination Intervention Committee. He said the Special Intervention Meetings, which began earlier this year, have shown positive results. 'Many technical and administrative issues have been resolved more quickly through direct engagement between implementing agencies, ministries and the State Government,' he said. Based on the report presented at the Sabah Federal-State Development Project Monitoring Coordination Meeting last May, the number of projects in pre-implementation status has been reduced from 207 projects to 137 projects. Ewon described the decline as a positive development resulting from collaboration among various parties. 'We have proposed several steps to the technical departments and project-owning ministries to ensure that emerging issues are discussed and resolved promptly. I also hope that the percentage of projects that have commenced will continue to increase at the upcoming meetings,' he said. He expressed appreciation to all ministries, the State Government and the technical departments that have successfully expedited the processes of procurement, contractor appointments and tenders for previously uninitiated projects.
