Strong wind warning for Perth as brutal winter blast hits
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a string of gale and strong wind warnings for coastal waters in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and NSW, with conditions expected to remain hazardous through to Tuesday night.
Gale warnings are in place for parts of the East Gippsland Coast in Victoria, the Eden Coast in NSW, and Tasmania's entire eastern seaboard, including the east of Flinders Island and South East Coast.
Strong wind warnings are also current for dozens of other coastal zones, including Perth, Albany, Esperance, the Gippsland region, and southern Tasmania.
Warnings have been reissued for some areas, like Victoria's West Coast, as the next cold front approaches.
Farmers are also being urged to take precautions as bitterly cold conditions continue to bite. The bureau has reissued sheep graziers' warnings for parts of Victoria, Tasmania and NSW, citing a risk of livestock losses due to a combination of cold temperatures, showers and blustery winds.
Affected regions include West and South Gippsland in Victoria, the Upper Derwent Valley in Tasmania, and the Snowy Mountains, ACT, and Tablelands regions in NSW.
'Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, showers and westerly winds are expected. There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions,' the bureau said in its warning.
Snow could also fall to as low as 500m in Tasmania's western forecast district on Tuesday, prompting a bushwalker alert for hazardous alpine conditions.
Walkers are urged to prepare for sudden changes in weather and potentially dangerous hiking conditions.
The brunt of this system is expected to move eastwards over the next 24 to 48 hours, keeping wind warnings in place for large stretches of coastline into Tuesday.
The cold blast comes as alpine resorts enjoy one of the best snow seasons in recent years.
As of Friday, snow depth at Spencers Creek was sitting at 135cm, surpassing the 2023 peak of 131cm.
Falls Creek measured 93cm, and other Victorian resorts like Mt Hotham, Mt Buller and Mt Baw Baw are also tracking close to last year's levels.
A strong, moisture-laden front earlier in the season helped lay the foundations, with frequent snow-bearing systems and consistently cold air preventing major melts.
The timing couldn't be better for school holiday crowds, with blue skies and thick natural cover delivering a near-perfect mid-July weekend.

School holiday skiers set for clear conditions across alpine resorts while frost warning issued for SA and Victoria
Clear conditions are forecast for alpine resorts on Friday following snow showers as widespread frost triggers warnings in South Australia and Victoria. Sky News Weather Presenter Wendy John said those in the nation's south-east should also be on the lookout for fog in addition to morning frost. 'Now if we have a look at what frost is expected, widespread, patchy right through the red centre as well,' she said. 'Having a look at widespread frost across New South Wales and Victoria, some parts will also be accompanied by fog. 'So do take care if you are driving to work Friday morning, those foggy conditions might get in the way.' The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a frost warning as temperatures are expected to dip to minus one for Friday morning in parts of the Mid North, Riverland and Murraylands forecast districts in SA. The same warning is in place for the Mallee, Wimmera, Northern Country, North Central, North East, Central, West and South Gippsland, and East Gippsland forecast districts of Victoria. 'Please be aware temperatures at ground level can be many degrees lower than those recorded by standard weather stations, especially in calm conditions with clear skies,' the BOM warned. Meanwhile, John said clear conditions are likely after snow showers hit Tasmania and ski resorts across the south-east of the country on Thursday. Tasmania received snow as low as 800 metres. '(On) the mainland those alps receiving some snow showers above 1200m, maybe just with one to two millimetres in it,' John said. The forecast will be welcome news for holidaymakers looking to hit the slopes before school returns, with clear conditions expected across ski resorts in Victoria and NSW on Friday. National capitals forecast for Friday Brisbane is forecast to be gloomy with a chance of showers, reaching a top of 21C. Sydneysiders can expect showers and a high of only 17 degrees. Canberra is set for a chilly start to the day, with the mercury starting at negative four before reaching a top of 13. Melbourne and Adelaide look set to be clear, with both cities reaching maximum temperatures of 15C. Similar conditions are forecast in Hobart, but with a top of just 14. Perth residents can expect a shower or two as the mercury reaches 19C. Darwin will continue to see sunny conditions with a top of 31C on the cards.
