Nearly half of MSMEs surveyed prefer UPI as a mode of transaction to grow their business, followed by Aadhaar-enabled banking , says a report.According to the MSME Digital Index Report by PayNearby , digital payments continue to gain strong acceptance among MSMEs, with UPI emerging as the most preferred mode of transaction at 48 per cent, followed by Aadhaar-enabled banking at 39 per cent.Among women entrepreneurs, Aadhaar banking saw even higher preference at 42 per cent, reflecting increasing trust in secure, tech-enabled services such as fingerprint and face authentication, the report said.The report is based a nationwide survey conducted among 10,000 individuals and MSMEs in retail-focused segments such as kirana stores, mobile recharge outlets, medical shops, customer service points (CSPs), and travel agencies.It found that smartphones have emerged as primary business device at 71 per cent while among women, it is even higher at 84 per cent.On benefits from digital adoption, a third of respondents cited improved operational efficiency, while over 73 per cent of small businesses across semi-urban and rural India have seen increased income or improved operational efficiency as a result of adopting digital tools."A small but notable 7 per cent of respondents have begun exploring automated or AI-powered tools, including inventory apps , automated billing systems, and customer engagement platforms, mostly through third-party solutions," the report said.Anand Kumar Bajaj, Founder, MD & CEO, PayNearby, said, "The MSME sector is the backbone of Bharat's economy, and the rapid adoption of digital tools such as smartphones, UPI, Aadhaar-enabled banking, and emerging AI workflows is proof that this segment is embracing modernisation."PayNearby, a DPIIT-certified company, is a branchless banking and digital network.

Indian minister Manjhi highlights MSME growth, credit surge in FY25
Indian MSME Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi has highlighted the rapid strides made by the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector. He was addressing a press conference in Mumbai on July 4, 2025, following his review visits to IDEMI and the Khadi & Village Industries Commission (KVIC) offices on July 3. Calling MSMEs the second largest contributor to India's economy, Manjhi noted that the sector contributes 30.1 per cent to the country's GDP, 35.4 per cent to manufacturing, and 45.73 per cent to exports. The Minister shared that the Udyam portal, which enables paperless registration for MSMEs, now has over 3.80 crore units registered, the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, said in a release. Additionally, the Udyam Assist Portal—launched to formalise informal micro-enterprises—has recorded over 2.72 crore units. Together, these 6.5 crore MSMEs have created employment for 28 crore people. The number of MSME units has grown fifteen-fold in the past five years, he stated. Indian MSME Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi has highlighted the sector's growth, noting its 30.1 per cent GDP share and 6.5 crore units employing 28 crore people. He cited record credit guarantees (~$36 billion in FY25), PMEGP's rural job impact, and the MSME Samadhaan portal's reduced backlog. He praised KVIC and others, reaffirming support for artisans via PM Vishwakarma. Highlighting government support schemes, Manjhi said the Prime Minister Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) has facilitated employment for 80.33 lakh individuals, with 80 per cent of the beneficiaries in rural India. Under the Credit Guarantee Scheme, over 1.18 crore guarantees worth ₹9.80 lakh crore (~$117.6 billion) have been approved so far, with a record ₹3 lakh crore (~$36 billion) credit guarantees extended in fiscal 2025 (FY25) alone. The number of beneficiaries is expected to triple by 2029. He added that the MSME Samadhaan portal, designed to resolve delayed payment issues, has seen its case backlog drop from 93,000 in October 2017 to 44,000 at present. The Minister also lauded institutions like KVIC, the Coir Board, and the National Small Industries Corporation Ltd for their efforts in promoting small industries and contributing to GDP and exports. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to empowering artisans through initiatives like the PM Vishwakarma scheme, which supports 18 traditional trades with end-to-end assistance. Image: X India and Argentina have agreed to deepen cooperation in key sectors such as critical minerals, defence manufacturing, space, shale gas, pharmaceuticals, digital health, telemedicine, information technology, and digital payments. The agreement came after wide-ranging talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Javier Milei in Buenos Aires on Saturday night. This marks the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Argentina in 57 years. Modi had previously visited the country in 2018 for the G20 Summit. He arrived in Buenos Aires earlier in the day and received a ceremonial welcome at Ezeiza International Airport. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The two leaders held delegation-level talks after Modi paid tribute to General Jose de San Martin, Argentina's national hero. President Milei then hosted a lunch in his honour. Officials said the two sides agreed to set up a joint working group on agriculture and explore cooperation in drones and defence manufacturing. India also offered to support the maintenance of Argentina's military helicopter fleet and proposed several military platforms. In trade, Modi called for Argentina's support to expand the India-MERCOSUR trade agreement. MERCOSUR is a South American trade bloc comprising Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. India also pushed for greater market access for its pharmaceutical products, suggesting a regulatory upgrade from Annex II to Annex I in Argentina's pharma classification system to ease entry. Argentina, in turn, briefed the Indian side on its fast-track approval system for Indian medicines. Digital cooperation was another key focus, with Modi highlighting the success of India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI). President Milei expressed strong interest in adopting UPI, especially in terms of how it could help Argentina's central bank manage monetary policy more effectively. The two leaders also reviewed progress on cooperation in critical minerals like lithium—essential for India's clean energy goals. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in August 2022, and the first joint working group meeting under this MoU took place in January. India and Argentina elevated their relationship to a strategic partnership in 2019 during the visit of then-President Mauricio Macri to India. In 2024, the total trade stood at $5.23 billion, making India Argentina's fifth-largest trading partner. Following the talks, Modi received the Key to the City of Buenos Aires from Mayor Jorge Macri. In a post on X, Prime Minister Modi said, 'Excellent meeting with President Javier Milei of Argentina. We are marking 75 years of India-Argentina diplomatic relations and 5 years since we elevated our relationship to a Strategic Partnership. We have covered significant ground, but we agree the journey ahead is even more promising!'

Aadhaar-based biometric and facial recognition attendance system launched for pourakarmikas in Hubballi-Dharwad
Hubballi: The Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) has launched a new Aadhaar-based biometric and facial recognition attendance system to boost the performance of pourakarmikas. The corporation introduced this system to enhance the efficiency of over 2,500 pourakarmikas and auto tipper drivers working across 82 wards, while improving the cleanliness standards of the city. The attendance system incorporates both biometric and facial recognition capabilities. Henceforth, the officials of HDMC will take attendance thrice a day. Pourakarmikas will give attendance in the morning while reporting to duty at 6am, and then again at 10am and 2pm. The govt of India's Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has officially sanctioned this advanced system. It ensures precise attendance tracking, timely wage disbursement, and enhanced administrative transparency. HDMC commissioner Rudresh Ghali said the system offers several advantages, including accurate attendance monitoring, reduced tardiness, punctual payment of wages to civil servants, elimination of paper-based attendance records, and improved administration with a user-friendly interface featuring Kannada voice guidance. Geo-fencing enables location-based attendance verification. "The corporation aims to enhance civic worker recognition, improve city cleanliness, and strengthen administrative efficiency through this technological advancement," he added. The HDMC's IT department awarded the contract for implementing this biometric and facial recognition system to Swasthi Private Limited, a start-up founded by Vijay Bhajantri and Siddalinga Latti. According to sources, this initiative aligns with the digital governance reforms being implemented across urban local bodies. The system is expected to benefit both the corporation and the workers by establishing transparent work documentation. HDMC plans to gradually expand the system's capabilities to include real-time location tracking and work completion verification. The executive engineer of SWM, Santosh Kumar Yarangali, explained that the system effectively tracks working hours. The technology allows supervisors to efficiently oversee workforce allocation across zones, leading to enhanced accountability and operational efficiency. The new attendance system has been implemented in zones 10 and 11, with zone 12 scheduled for implementation shortly, encompassing a total of 27 wards. He further stated that the biometric and facial recognition attendance system would be extended to all wards within two months. Additionally, he confirmed that 90 attendance points have already been identified and geo-tagged.
