Sebastian Stan's Marvel superstardom may have never happened if it wasn't for a raunchy 2010 comedy.
In a conversation with Vanity Fair published April 21, the Oscar-nominated actor, 42, reflected on how much the role of Bucky Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe changed his life. Stan recalled how he was "actually struggling with work" before he was cast in 2011's "Captain America: The First Avenger."
"I had just gotten off the phone with my business manager, who told me I was saved by $65,000 that came in residuals from 'Hot Tub Time Machine,'" he told Vanity Fair.
In the 2010 comedy about a group of friends who go back in time through a hot tub at a ski resort, Stan played the over-the-top bully character Blaine, who gets into a fight with Rob Corddry's Lou.
Sebastian Stan says other actors are 'afraid' to interview him for his Donald Trump movie
"Hot Tub Time Machine" was one of Stan's earliest movies after he previously had roles in films like "Rachel Getting Married" and shows like "Gossip Girl."
In a conversation with Variety last year, he said he had some of the "most fun I've ever had on a project" working on "Hot Tub Time Machine."
One year after the movie's release, Stan debuted as Steve Rogers' (Chris Evans) buddy Bucky Barnes in "Captain America: The First Avenger," catapulting him to global fame.
He has now played the character across numerous Marvel films and TV shows for nearly 15 years, including in May's "Thunderbolts," which pairs him with Florence Pugh's Yelena from "Black Widow." Stan has also been announced as part of the massive cast of 2026's "Avengers: Doomsday."
Sebastian Stan talks his total Trump-ification for new movie 'The Apprentice'
Stan previously starred as Bucky in 2018's "Avengers: Infinity War" and 2019's "Avengers: Endgame." In a full circle moment for the actor, "Endgame" included a scene where Paul Rudd's Ant-Man references "Hot Tub Time Machine" during a discussion about the rules of time travel.
"I was watching the movie and they made that reference, and I kind of looked around excited, but no one cared," Stan joked during a 2019 panel. "I was the only one that really cared."
During that same panel, Stan also touched on his past career struggles, revealing that in 2011, his business manager warned, "You have one month left until you're completely bankrupt." He quipped, "That's always a good call."

Michael Douglas Reveals Why He's Chosen To Take A Step Back From Acting
Michael Douglas has admitted he has 'no real intention' to continue acting. The two-time Oscar winner recently appeared at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival to promote a re-release of his movie One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, where Variety reported that he reflected on the more recent years of his life and career. Having recovered from stage four throat cancer in the early 2010s, Michael told the audience: 'I have not worked since 2022 purposefully because I realised I had to stop. I had been working pretty hard for almost 60 years, and I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set.' The 80-year-old continued: 'I have no real intentions of going back. 'I say I'm not retired because if something special came up, I'd go back, but otherwise, no.' Michael did claim there is 'one little independent movie' he's still 'trying to get a good script out of', but aside from this one project, he is 'happy to play the wife' to his wife of 25 years, Catherine Zeta-Jones, 'in the spirit of maintaining a good marriage'. Michael is best known for his work in movies like Romancing The Stone, Fatal Attraction, Basis Instinct and Wall Street, which earned him his second Academy Award (his first was as a producer on Best Picture recipient One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, in which he also starred). In the last few years, he's played Hank Pym in a string of Marvel movies (the most recent of which was 2023's Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania), narrated the documentary America's Burning and appeared in the title role of The Kominsky Method, for which he was nominated three times for the Best Actor In A Comedy Series award at the Emmys, and won a Golden Globe. He does also still have one film in the pipeline, Looking Through Water, in which he will act alongside his son Cameron Douglas. Scarlett Johansson Becomes Hollywood's Highest Grossing Lead Actor With ‘Jurassic World Rebirth'
Four years after exiting the Marvel Cinematic Universe with 'Black Widow,' Scarlett Johansson has now set a new record as the global box office's highest grossing lead actor before inflation adjustment, passing fellow MCU stars Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Downey Jr. And it is all thanks to 'Jurassic World: Rebirth.' In the new film, Johannson takes over from Chris Pratt as the lead star of the dinosaur franchise, playing ex-military operative Zora Bennett in a mission to one of the few remaining islands where dinosaurs still live following the events of the 'Jurassic World' trilogy. In its first six days in theaters worldwide, the film has earned a $318 million global launch, second only to the Chinese animated film 'Ne Zha 2' among all 2025 releases. More from TheWrap Scarlett Johansson Becomes Hollywood's Highest Grossing Lead Actor With 'Jurassic World Rebirth' Uma Thurman Confirms 'Red, White & Royal Blue 2' Return, Praises Its 'Better World' With Female President | Video 'Broken Voices' Review: Disquieting Czech Drama Is 'Whiplash' for Singing 7 Best New Comedies Streaming on Netflix Right Now According to data from The Numbers, that start gives Johansson a lifetime career box office gross of $14.8 billion in films where she plays a lead role or a lead ensemble role. More than $8.7 billion of that total comes from the four 'Avengers' films and 'Captain America: Civil War,' in which she played Natasha Romanov, a.k.a. Black Widow. Other lead ensemble roles that count towards that total include her MCU debut film, 'Iron Man 2,' and the two animated 'Sing' films, in which she voiced the rock-loving porcupine Ash. Of the top five highest grossing lead actors on The Numbers' list, the only one that has not appeared in a Marvel film is Tom Hanks, with the others being Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man), Jackson (Nick Fury) and Chris Pratt (Peter Quill/Star-Lord). Jackson previously held the record with $14.6 billion, with Pixar's two 'Incredibles' films being counted by the site as a lead ensemble role. Downey Jr., the MCU's founding father, has $14.2 billion in leading roles in The Numbers' books, with approximately $11.8 billion coming from his nine Marvel movies. His Best Supporting Actor Oscar winning turn in the $976 million 'Oppenheimer,' as the name of that award would suggest, is not included in that count. Depending on whether one counts Doctor Doom as a lead ensemble role, Downey Jr. will have a chance to take the box office crown back from Johansson in December 2026 when 'Avengers: Doomsday' hits theaters … assuming of course that the film and/or its 2027 follow-up 'Avengers: Secret Wars' doesn't use multiversal loopholes to bring Black Widow back from the dead despite Johansson's assertions in multiple interviews that her time in the MCU has ended. Stevie Wonder's MLK Holiday Journey To Be A Documentary
Source: Paras Griffin / Getty The story behind how the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. became a federal holiday with the help of legendary musician Stevie Wonder will now be the subject of a documentary. The multiple Grammy Award winner is partnering with TIME Studios to produce the unnamed documentary film, which will explore Wonder's personal tie to the movement to get a national holiday to recognize Dr. King's birthday, which became official when then President Ronald Reagan signed the bill making it a law in 1983. Stevie Wonder will appear on-screen in the film to share his experiences during that time, which will also include archival footage that has never been seen by the public. One key element of the documentary will be the making of 'Happy Birthday,' a song crafted as an ode to Dr. King on the 1980 Hotter Than July album. The song is now a fixture at birthday celebrations across the globe, no matter the scale. Oscar nominee Traci A. Curry, who has directed the powerful documentary ATTICA as well as the NatGeo mini series Hurricane Katrina: Race Against Time , has been tabbed to direct the film. Stevie Wonder's Eyes 'n' Sound production company will serve as executive producers along with Time Studios. In a statement, the musical icon said: 'I'm excited to tell the story of the making of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. More importantly, I want us to learn and remember this story with today's eye and understanding. If we truly understood how this bill came to be, then we will really appreciate the power of the people.' Lynne Benioff, co-owner and co-chair of TIME Studios expressed their gratitude in working on the project as well in a statement, adding: 'We are honored to help bring this important chapter of history to light and to work with Stevie Wonder in telling the story of how his artistry and activism helped shape a national movement. We believe this film will spark meaningful conversations about the profound impact one person's voice and vision can have on our culture and world.'
