VCU holds off George Mason to claim Atlantic 10 title and NCAA berth
VCU led by eight at the break, 36-28, but George Mason got back-to-back 3-pointers from Jared Billups and Woody Newton to trail by just two, 45-43, with more than 12 minutes to play. Shulga answered with a 3 and hit a pair of free throws before finding Jack Clark for a 3 to push the VCU lead to 53-43.
Darius Maddox hit a 3 with 2:27 left to get the Patriots within one at 59-58. Coming out of a timeout, Shulga held the ball at the top of the key, then calmly knocked down a step-back 3 with 1:59 left. Jalen Haynes' layup with 39 seconds left got George Mason within 3, but Zach Anderson missed a 3-pointer with :04 left and Newton was forced to foul Bamisile with a half-second left.
Bamisile and Jack Clark each scored 17 points for VCU (28-6). Shulga, the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, hit 8 of 9 from the line as the Rams converted 22 of 27.
Haynes led George Mason (26-8) with 17 points and eight rebounds. Maddox had 12 points to go with three steals and Anderson and Brayden O'Connor each added 10 points.
VCU and George Mason finished the regular season tied for the regular season championship with 15-3 records. The Rams reached the conference championship game for the ninth time since joining the A-10 in 2012-13.

Asante Samuel Sr. may have scuttled any chance of his son signing with the Dolphins. The former Patriots star went scorched earth on the AFC East squad for having a lack of leadership in the aftermath of the recent trade that sent Jalen Ramsey to the Steelers. Samuel's comments are quite harsh, especially since he went after the coach-general manager combo in McDaniel and Grier. Advertisement The pair recently made the franchise-altering decision to move from Ramsey after the star cornerback routinely showed up late to practice and meetings, and 'undermined' former defensive coordinator Vic Fangio two seasons ago, as well as McDaniel this past season, according to the Sun Sentinel. 3 Patriots free agents still remain unsigned by a team
The rush of free agency is in the rearview, but the search for another opportunity never really ends for unsigned NFL players. That group includes three New England Patriots players signed to the team last year. There have been sweeping changes within the Patriots organization since the arrival of Mike Vrabel as the new head coach and de facto decision-maker. One of the apparent goals was creating a new vision that wasn't hampered by remnants of the past. That led to Vrabel moving on from the last remaining hangovers from the Super Bowl era in New England. Fan-favorite players, such as David Andrews, Jonathan Jones, Deatrich Wise, Joe Cardona and Ja'Whaun Bentley were shown the door. Andrews decided to retire from playing football, while Wise, Cardona and Jones landed on their feet elsewhere. That leaves Bentley as one of three Patriots free agents who still remain unsigned. LB Ja'Whaun Bentley The fact that Bentley remains unsigned is a head-scratcher considering he's one of the better linebackers in the league. He's a proven locker room leader and a former Super Bowl champion. One would think teams would be knocking down the door for his services. Yet, all has been completely silent on the Bentley front since his release. He suffered a season-ending pectoral injury early last season. Perhaps he's waiting for the right opportunity to jump back in the mix with another football team. Unless he suffered an injury setback, he should have plenty left in the tank at 28 years old. RB JaMycal Hasty JaMycal Hasty appeared in 15 games for the Patriots last season and carried the ball 20 times for 69 yards. Most of his work came on special teams, but he was occasionally utilized in the offensive backfield as a change-of-pace option. He's a shifty veteran with the ball in his hands, and he also has the versatility to catch passes out of the backfield. The Patriots didn't utilize his receiving skills as well as they would have liked, but he was also buried on the depth chart behind Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson. EDGE Oshane Ximines Oshane Ximines showed promise as a player who could contribute defensively for the Patriots during training camp. The team was hurting for pass-rushing help, and Ximines initially looked like a player who could boost them in that effort. There was hope that the Patriots could tap into something the New York Giants couldn't with the former third-round draft pick. However, that hope died quickly in New England. Ximines became an afterthought and ended up on injured reserve early in the season. Time will tell if the 28-year-old defender has an opportunity to turn things around in 2025. 61 days until the Texans' 2025 season opener: Who has worn No. 61?
The Houston Texans are less than 100 days away from kicking off the 2025 season in Los Angeles against the Rams at SoFi Stadium and we're counting down the days until a victory ensues on the west coast. Texans Wire will each day tell you which player has worn the number of the day leading up to kickoff and pick the player who ensured the number best during their time at NRG Stadium. As for today, let's take a look at who has won No. 61 since the inaugural season in 2002. Texans players to wear No. 61 No. 63 currently belongs to no one entering the upcoming season. That doesn't mean someone won't wear it this year, but it would likely come after roster cutdowns with a new addition off waivers. Even then, it would likely be an offensive lineman who'd come in to backup and compete for a roster spot, if not be on the practice squad. Let's look back at who has worn the No. 63 in recent memory to sort out the G.O.A.T. for an offensive lineman. Best Player: No one At this point in the series, No. 61 is the least worn number in franchise history. While four players wore it over the 20 seasons, no one held the record for the longest tenure, which lasted only 16 games. Cannon, who spent a decade in New England, spent the majority of his time with the Texans on the IR. And Weary switched numbers after the inaugural season in 2002. Can anyone come up with a reason as to why X person belongs with the G.O.A.T. status next to their name? No? I didn't think so.
